Environmentalists, already peeved with the administration’s handling of the Gulf oil spill, are accusing President Obama of breaking his campaign pledge to end the slaughter of whales.
The Obama administration is leading an effort within the International Whaling Commission to lift a 24-year international ban on commercial whaling for Japan, Norway and Iceland, the remaining three countries in the 88-member commission that still hunt whales.
The administration argues that the new deal will save thousands of whales over the next decade by stopping the three countries from illegally exploiting loopholes in the moratorium.
But environmentalists aren't buying it.

The question is: Why do they hunt whales? They have a purpose and are very useful for example the whale oil so i don't see so much wrong with it. We, after all, hunt animals to use them and that's just natural. So i don't see that much wrong with it as long as they don't extinct the whales.
Besides the whale sashimi i ate on my last vacation in japan was very interesting.

The "whale sashimi" you ate came from an intelligent being.
Should we hunt and eat those? If you think so, then (this is somewhat of a stretch IMO), why not you?
If adopted, the whaling nations would agree to catch limits set by the IWC that are below present self-set levels. They would also agree to an oversight and enforcement arrangement.
As proposed, several thousand fewer whales will be caught over the 10-year period than would have been caught if the present situation of exceptions to the moratorium for "research" and commercial purposes.
IWC Chair Cristian Maquieira of Chile said, "For the first time since the adoption of the commercial whaling moratorium, we will have strict, enforceable limits on all whaling operations. As a result, several thousand less whales will be killed over the period of the agreement. In addition, no other IWC countries will be permitted to start hunting whales during the period."
The proposal also creates a South Atlantic Sanctuary, which South American nations have repeatedly proposed at IWC meetings without success. It recognizes the non-lethal value and uses of whales, such as whale watching, as a management option for coastal states and addresses related scientific, conservation and management issues of such uses.
Yeah, they should just grow HEMP, since it can be used for everything whales could, and MORE.

...With that logic, they should make all illegal drugs legal, since lifting bans has such an effect!
