Well, tag that as another campaign promise broken. What's the count now?

Obama Under Fire for Backing Deal to Lift Global Ban on Commercial Whaling

Environmentalists, already peeved with the administration’s handling of the Gulf oil spill, are accusing President Obama of breaking his campaign pledge to end the slaughter of whales.

The Obama administration is leading an effort within the International Whaling Commission to lift a 24-year international ban on commercial whaling for Japan, Norway and Iceland, the remaining three countries in the 88-member commission that still hunt whales.

The administration argues that the new deal will save thousands of whales over the next decade by stopping the three countries from illegally exploiting loopholes in the moratorium.

But environmentalists aren't buying it.

Doesn't sound like he's hitting very well with the environmentalists, does it? Maybe in 2012 they'll finally have realized the value of the words coming out of his mouth.

This is awful! Whales are living animals!!!! We do not need to hunt and kill any of them, oil spills will take care of that. Truth is, the oil and other chems harvested from whales could be taken from many other renewable (plant) sources.

But, Obama says whale hunting will cease if they lift all the roadblocks to whale hunting. Don't you trust his words?

Urgh.

What can you even say to that? How could ANYBODY lift such a ban, or want to. Especially considering what is currently going on in the gulf.

Sickening...

PETA is going to be PISSED!

Nope, I trust absolutely nothing he says. With that logic, they should make all illegal drugs legal, since lifting bans has such an effect! We might as well just open our borders then, if we didn't try to keep them out, they wouldn't come.

I am starting to see why many people considered him the Antichrist!

His apparent disregard for the planet is frankly shocking!

Hey we might as well eat them up before the oil gets to them LOL.

F Obama and F the Democrats!

Ever watch Whale Wars? It's one of the worst things I've ever saw. Obama is as bad as Bush, end of story.

I'm voting Green Party whenever I can. The Democrats can stick it!

The question is: Why do they hunt whales? They have a purpose and are very useful for example the whale oil so i don't see so much wrong with it. We, after all, hunt animals to use them and that's just natural. So i don't see that much wrong with it as long as they don't extinct the whales.
Besides the whale sashimi i ate on my last vacation in japan was very interesting.

Look up whale and dolphin intelligence online sometime.

The "whale sashimi" you ate came from an intelligent being.

Should we hunt and eat those? If you think so, then (this is somewhat of a stretch IMO), why not you?

I can kind of see his point - if these countries are doing it legally, they'd have to abide by the rules and only hunt a certain amount, which would presumably be less than they are illegally hunting now.

I don't think it would work though - they'd just use their 'scientific study' crap on top of the legal hunting. Pretty disgusting in my opinion.

What do ya mean that Obama is as bad as Bush? Obama is WORSE than Bush!! I cant believe that I am defending Bush
Bush's biggest problem was that he didnt have any real life experiences in which to make decisions.

The question is: Why shouldn't we? WHO really can prove that those animals are intelligent? IF they are intelligent, don't you think they would've evolved over all those thousands and thousands years they live in this planet? Humans evolved, become more intelligent, built and created all kind of things - while animals stood the same and never changed one tiny bit. They just follow their instinct, nothing more.
Don't you think there must be a reason for it? Maybe because the only reason they exist is to be used from us? I mean that's more logical than saying "Animals are as intelligent as humans, should have the same rights and be treated as something special"

So like i said: As long as we don't extinct them (And Greenpeace for the last couple of decades said always "Whales will be instinct in 10 years" and they still live here) we can hunt, kill and use all animals for a greater good and most animals are very useful once they're dead.

(And i bet now i will get another #load of death treats from stupid animal lovers
)

Stupid animal lovers? You're pathetic. I can't talk to someone who talks about intelligence and then thinks 'extinct them' is an actual term

So you are saying because we have opposable thumbs and mathmatics that we should be able to kill whatever we want?

And no, I'm not an animal-lover, exactly; just, you know, a decent human being.

Yes...President Obama HATES whales!!! He has alway hated whales...most Marxists/Socialists/Secret Muslims hate whales!!! Just watch Glen Beck, he explains why.

Here is a hint on thinking objectively...as if anyone here is interested in that..

Stories from Fox News, MSNBC, Greenpeace etc.. Anyplace that has obvious bias...look deeper. Find other articles, find the facts minus the BS.

The status quo on whaling...Moratorium..No Whaling...

Japan, Norway and Iceland completely IGNORE the moratorium.
Greenpeace and others attack thier boats.

This proposal? It puts limits on how many whales they can hunt and oversight on those countries whaling operations.

It drastically REDUCES the numbers of whales killed each year...

The alternative? Let them keep doing it thier way and keep screaming STOP....which hasn't worked very well.

This proposal is aimed at saving more whales, which should be the actual goal. .

THIS PLAN REDUCES THE NUMBER OF WHALES KILLED...DOES ANYONE HAS A BETTER PLAN, PERHAPS BOMBING ICELAND, JAPAN and NORWAY?

If adopted, the whaling nations would agree to catch limits set by the IWC that are below present self-set levels. They would also agree to an oversight and enforcement arrangement.

As proposed, several thousand fewer whales will be caught over the 10-year period than would have been caught if the present situation of exceptions to the moratorium for "research" and commercial purposes.

IWC Chair Cristian Maquieira of Chile said, "For the first time since the adoption of the commercial whaling moratorium, we will have strict, enforceable limits on all whaling operations. As a result, several thousand less whales will be killed over the period of the agreement. In addition, no other IWC countries will be permitted to start hunting whales during the period."

The proposal also creates a South Atlantic Sanctuary, which South American nations have repeatedly proposed at IWC meetings without success. It recognizes the non-lethal value and uses of whales, such as whale watching, as a management option for coastal states and addresses related scientific, conservation and management issues of such uses.

Yeah, they should just grow HEMP, since it can be used for everything whales could, and MORE.

Actually, if you take Portugal as an example, it has that exact effect.

On the topic of whaling, I applaude those of you wading through the BS of partisanship and seeing that such a move might actually be a good thing.
