Man saves family from road-side robbery, shoots assailant

WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - A wanted man is in critical condition in the hospital after he was shot during an alleged armed robbery.

Shortly before midnight Thursday, a 911 call came in to the Colleton County Sheriff's Office in reference to an attempted armed robbery and shooting that occurred near the intersection of McLeod Road and I-95 near mile marker 62.

When deputies arrived, they found three victims of a robbery attempt that stated they were traveling I-95 southbound in two separate vehicles, one pulling a U-Haul trailer. The vehicle pulling the trailer started having mechanical trouble, so they pulled off onto the exit ramp at McLeod Road in Colleton County near Walterboro.

They called for a tow truck and proceeded to transfer the U-Haul trailer from the disabled vehicle to the second vehicle. One of the female victims was standing by her vehicle and her daughter stood near the other vehicle and trailer while her husband trying to wire the trailer lights into his truck.

At that time, a silver-colored sedan pulled up occupied by three individuals and a male subject, later identified as David Jayquon Jakes, 19, exited the back seat and pointed a large caliber handgun at one of the women.

The victims said Jakes was covering his face with a cloth of some type and started ordering her as he referred to her as "pretty lady." At that time, the woman's son-in-law stood up from behind his vehicle and she ran to her daughter as they took cover.

Her son-in-law was armed and drew his weapon and ordered them to leave several times. As Jakes turned and pointed his large caliber weapon, the son-in-law fired several rounds striking Jakes who then fell to the ground and dropped his weapon.

The two subjects in the suspect vehicle helped the wounded Jakes back into their vehicle and fired several rounds back at the victim and then drove away.

A short time later, the Colleton Regional Hospital staff notified the Sheriff's Office that they just had an individual come in to their emergency room with several gun shot wounds. The individual fit the general description of Jakes and other information was collected indicating that he believed to be the same person.

Jakes was transferred to a Charleston-area hospital where he was last reported to be in critical condition. The recovered weapon presented by Jakes at the scene was recovered and found to be reported to NCIC as a stolen weapon.

The incident is still under investigation but deputies obtained warrants charging Jakes with three counts of attempted armed robbery, three counts of assault with the intent to kill, one count of possessing a stolen firearm and one count of possessing a weapon during a violent crime.

The male victim of the robbery attempt that fired in self-defense just recently returned from the Middle East as an Army Specialist and had a Concealed Weapons Permit to carry his weapon.

No charges are pending against him at this time and none are anticipated to be filed against him, said officials.

Open season on gangbangers and thugs is about to commence! I'm hoping his com padres will also be charged as accessories to the crimes and see the inside of the barred hotel for many years! Crimes of this nature (opportunity) are finally beginning to tilt in favor of the attacked rather than the attackers!

Good story.. just glad that none of the innocent victims got hit in the cross fire as they were driving away..

Damn scum .. for once I'm glad the perp didn't die.. if all those charges stick, that dumb kid is looking at 25-50 years in jail at least..

Although to be unbiased, in my city two weeks ago a guy saw someone robbing a cell phone store, throwing cellphones into his jacket, they took off, and a customer in the store ran after them, firing his weapon indiscriminately at them and their car down the street -- no one was hurt.. and the guy believed he was doing the right thing.

What a sad, awesome story. Just another average family attacked at the whim of scumbags. This story should make all the headlines but we know that won't happen.

Just another reason to allow Concealed Carry.

SnF for your thread, which, in the UK we would have never heard about as there is so little news on BP oil spill, yesterday was reported after the sports.

First thing comes to mind - Outstanding Training, glad to hear the service is still having good training!

When I served, I drove my 66 Mustang between duty and training stations. Since everything I owned was in the trunk (don't laugh Mustangs had very small trunks but all I owned in the world was in said trunk.) I carried my SnW .44. When I left the car SnW came with me when stopping for a pit stop. I did not carry a permit as I never thought about it since I was not in one state for very long. When being pulled over for speeding as the Mustang seemed to have a habit of pulling away from the pack, as I was driving long distances daily, I would placed my weapon on the dash in full view. l drove in dress uniform which said I served in VN and when my paper work for weapon checked out (always carry copy of receipt of purchase for my weapon) I had no problems with the LEOs, never received a ticket for the pull over. Some LEOs suggested it was big and one even said "Its loaded!" to his senior partner and we both cracked up which I pointed out so was his. It was a different time in 1970 - 76. Today I would carry permit as times have changed along with the public! I am so please that this soldier was home and was able to provide homeland security for his family directly!

I have a terrible feeling we will be reading about more threads like this one and the 80 year old shooting a home invader who shot first at him and his wife.

I will say it again when the system releases into the community a convicted convict to continue his/her evil ways, the people responsible for the release should be held accountable to the victim(s) of said convict next crime. Not a popular idea here at ATS but one I have felt strongly about for 37 years.

Exactly why I have a CCP. You never know when someone is going to pull a stunt like this. What a great guy! He even WARNED them and told them to leave but Gangstasupreme couldn't handle the embarrassment and got his butt shot off. Fully deserved. Enjoy your stay at the state pen.
The only real tragedy is that the victim's tax dollars will pay to keep this creep locked up. Is that justice? really?
