It takes hundreds of thousands or maybe even millions of years for oil to form, so, what did Advanced Ancient Civilizations use for fuel?
It seems we had a full supply of oil when we started pumping it out of the ground.

This creates a few facts about Advanced Ancient Civilizations.

Either they used a different energy source.

Or, they were destroyed or destroyed themselves soon after their oil based mechanical boom.

Or, it has been a million years since an oil based Advanced Ancient Civilization has existed allowing the Earths oil reserves to replenish.

An M.I.T. professor, discovered that oil actually start out as a single atom of carbon. While under pressure it picks up Hydrogen atoms and makes the first molecule of Methane. As it ascends towards the surface, it picks up additional molecules and atoms becoming crude oil. No dinosaurs are involved, which is why oil is discovered MILES BELOW the surface!
Oil is a natural occurring compound. This is why the old oil fields in Wyoming, Montana, and Texas are refilling. This is why Halliburton is busting butt in Wyoming and other places, purchasing "empty old oilfields."
Sadly, the M.I.T. professor met a mysterious death. Go figure.

To the OP:

If we subscribe to the most "appreciated" theories out there (far far out there) then the fuel of choice must have been nuclear in nature.

If we go by more conventional theories ("accepted", which around here means wrong!), then it must have been wood (fuel is used literally here, not just machine fuel but fuel for heat, for example).

Take your pick.

for this to work in a large scale, over a large period of time, hydrogen must be almost infinite. On earth hydrogen is NOT infinite (yes, there is a lot of it in the water but that is bound so it is not "usable" to make oil, that would alter the composition of the atmosphere with all the extra oxygen being released) so oil is not exactly a renewable source of energy - not to mention the other "benefits" it has (If you live close to the Gulf of Mexico north coast, you know what I mean)

The answer is: Oil forms far faster than mainstream science says because Oil is simply too toxic to have biological origin and the living Earth produces oil very fast, but since the use of oil in ancient advanced civilization is far from reckless when compared to our modern day civilization, they never runs out oil, I know the living earth will stop produces oil if it gets too much pollution for punishing technological civilizations, so they uses oil wisely(I mean wiser than today's civilization where oil isn't just for mere profit) to prevents further pollution.

OK (yawn).
Back to Junior High School Chemistry class.
H2 is in dry atmosphere, by volume is 0.55 ppmv. This excludes the decomposing solid compounds in Basalt, Granite, and soil.
Although not infinite (everything except G_D is) it is in abundance to form multiple compounds.
Even during lightning strikes (natural hydrolysis, smell the ozone?) H2 is emitted.
The Earth will have plenty of oil. The greedy, will not.

Sigh!
Oil is not of biological origin.?

Do you think there is an elf factory beneath the surface that produces it?
Sorry.
Oil is indeed naturally produced beneath the surface of the Earth.

Yes, but there's no elf factory beneath the surface of the earth, and the earth is a living planet and if you want to know more about this, check this link: en.wikipedia.org...

Is the Earth also sentient? Because what you said above falls in that category!

Violater1, most of the molecular hydrogen has escaped from the atmosphere by now (it IS the lighter gas there is so it has the biggest rms speed on a given temperature, for hydrogen that speed is above the escape velocity of the Earth). What remains, and it is a lot by any means, is bound to form other molecules (water, acids, acid salts and organic molecules). What is "created" by lightning is quickly bound to oxygen again, what little escapes this either forms molecules with the rest of the atmospheric gases or escapes to space).

Has this process you mentioned been verified in the lab? It seems the long way to get to that result and, if indeed it happens, it must take ages to produce the desired results. Plus, to get oil in large, usable, deposits you need large concentrations of hydrogen (if your way is the way nature does things) which are no longer available on Earth.

At least a name for this M.I.T Proff? some links?
We could at least google up the details and read on him.

Hiya earth2, in the past we've used anything that burns. If it was available in the region, crude petroleum was popular. Whale oil has been used by coastal populations. Further inland and around the Mediterranean we've used olive oil and castor oil.

I think Plato said Atlantis was fueled by a crystal and it was there misuse of this energy that ended up destroying them... Perhaps they used all these certain crystals up

Or maybe they used solar

To the OP. By advanced Civilization are you talking about people who have learned to burn things to make heat energy? If so, then ever since man discovered fire we have been an "Advanced" civilization.

I assume you are talking about a race who has developed technology in one form or another, beyond mechanical instruments.

Let's see. We have used electricity regularly for over a century so far. Compared to the evolutionary timescale that it took to get us where we are, that is insignificant and already we have found ways of producing clean and 100% renewable energy. Humans could not use up the entirety of all the earths oil deposits in just over a century. Not now and probably not ever.

That being said. If there was in fact another advanced civilization that went through the oil phase, we can probably assume they didn't use it all up which is why it is still here now. Even if Atlantis really did sink only 12k years ago.

Atlantis used a crystal? Regular quartz crystals were used in primitive radio technology for the longest time. Obviously they have some kind of electromagnetic conductive property. And it has been tested to be able to store information on quartz as well. Who knows, maybe science will find a way to use quartz as a means to harness some kind of endless electromagnetic energy.

Edit to add: Stargate Atlantis showed us that Atlantis used what they called a Zero Point Modulator. It pulled vacuum energy from an enclosed subspace environment inside the Crystal structure.

Stargate FTW!!
