To be honest, I wish Yahoo did the same thing, because several years ago some chinese hacker brute forced my account password, and changed all of my profile info to suit him, and my security questions etc. And to this day yahoo refuses to give the account back to me, because I cannot prove that I am the rightful owner :\

I just created a gmail account yesterday.
There was no request for any type of phone number.
