My current roommate is a bus driver for a school district. The problem? She is off CONSTANTLY! Shesh oh Pete! It must be nice to get a 5 figure a year salary to be off so much!

I work 5 days a week 8 hours a day at a crappy job in a hotel, I have to beg for time off, even then, I usually have to work an extra shift so that I can cover the person that is covering for me.

Not with my roommate, oh no, she gets paid days off, sick time, vacation time, (even though she gets the standard school vacation time off with pay)

The only time she doesn't get paid for is the Summer break.

This is bull!

Why on earth should we as taxpayers pay for services not rendered? Why should you and I pay for school bus drivers that aren't driving?

I guarantee she is off today with pay, she didn't drive any kids to school, but instead is sitting on the couch watching days of our lives, and being paid for it!

In this day and age of people screaming for fiscal responsibility in our government, why is this tolerated?

On a related note, why on earth is it allowed that state employees be able to be in a Union?

So you and I have to put up with drivers that probably shouldn't be on the road, because they have been in the Union for 20 years. They can't be fired, just written up, they get retirement, and all this time off because they got a CDL?

This is BULL Crap!

Sounds to me you are just jealous. Why not g become a busdriver yourself or get a better job that is not at a hotel? Start your own company and be your own boss.
Just because someone has it better than you does not mean they should get less or that you should get more.
And in most schools the bus is paid for by the parents not your tax dollars.

Wukky- she is your roommate right?
Be thankful where you live that she has a job and can pay her share of expenses versus mooching off you.
I realize it's frustrating to sometimes see those with more money, more free time who clearly don't deserve it when you work your butt off...but just hang in there, and ALWAYS look for something better.
Opportunity doesn't always knock unless invited.

also wanted to add

A "5 figure a year salary" could be 10,000 and is not that much at all.

What school system does she drive for? Most bus drivers get part time pay and little if any benefits. I have had a few friends who were bus drivers and there was a lot more to their jobs. How many times have you been kicked, bit or spit on in your job?

Also, most jobs I worked included weekends and six days or more in a row. Getting one day off was like pulling teeth, and if you wanted a Saturday, Sunday or holiday off, forget it. Still, I was getting a check and paying the bills, while I looked for something better.

As others have stated, at least you are getting help with the rent and utilities.

Some of you aren't getting this. This lady makes about 65K a year. She gets full medical benefits, pension, plus, she gets paid time off! A LOT of paid time off!

It's insane!

Sure it's great to make a decent living, but my only real gripe is all the paid time off! Shesh oh Pete!

I am not really griping about how much she gets paid, I am instead griping about how much time she gets off!

When I go home in the morning, it's a crap shoot, is she going to be home? Or is she going to actually be at work?

This is what Unions get you, people who get paid to sit on their duffs and collect a paycheck!

You wonder why the Michigan economy is in the shape it's in? It's because of these damn Unions!

This isn't earning a paycheck, it's freaking socialism!

The OP is right about the inequity here though...and I too find it deplorable that someone paid by government funds can be in a union. It's rather ridiculous...

But then again, Unions are kind of going the way of the dinosaur. I wouldn't expect them to survive too much longer. It's like the guy being paid 100,000 a yr to drive a forklift at GM....and then folks wonder why jobs get outsourced.

While some of this may be jealousy, there is an issue of reasonable compensation, vs. fiscal irresponsibility.

Still, when looking out for number one, maybe the OP should see if his roommate can get him in the Union!
Be happy you have a roommate that can pay their share....

65K + full benefits and summers off?

Wukky, have you considered a career change?

Ask her to help you get an in if she can.

Just a thought.

The problem is, thanks to child support, I HAVE NO DRIVERS LICENSE!

No drivers license, no CDL. No CDL, no bus driver job.

So it is child supports fault that you do not have a drivers licence? Or the fact that you did not pay it and they took it away?

Yep, it's all my fault that the second the divorce was final I was 5K behind, automatically causing the state of Florida to suspend my license.

Try and get over that part, the rest of the rant isn't about that.

Does she have a reason for being off so much?
Medical condition or any other valid reason.... because no matter which country you live in and which company you work for, just taking time off for no reason consistently will get you the sack?

Is this a genuine and balanced account of this woman's working habits or are you just pissed off and jealous because she earns more and has lot's of paid holiday and sick pay?

Besides weekends, she gets all the school holidays off, parent teacher days, administrative days, basically every day the kids are off, this woman is off too. On top of all that time off, she gets personal days off that she takes routinely, she takes sick days off.

Yes it pretty much boils down to that she gets so much paid time off.

That's what ticks me off.

No the rest of the rant is about how you have a crappy job and make less than someone else who works less than you.
Her job is to drive kids to and from school and take them to field trips and is paid well.
She is in a better position than you so what? You do not like it get a better job and start worring less about what your tax dollars are going towards and start paying for your own children.
Once you fulfill all of your personal financial obligations (like your children) then you will have some room to complain. Many school ditricts have students pay to use the bus as you will see in the links i posted above.

Don't assume things that you don't know.

Yes this rant is about how I have a crappy job and am sick and tired of coming home after working that crappy job to find my roommate on the couch watching soap operas and getting paid for it.

Yes, that is in fact what this rant is about.

And your oh so simple solution, "get a better job" thank you Mr. wizard! WOW! I never freaking thought of that! My GOD! How could I have not seen that solution?
Because jobs are SO plentiful in Michigan right now, I should already have picked up one of the hundreds of thousands of great paying jobs they have here in Michigan. I mean with the labor shortage as it is right now gee whiz, my phone should be ringing off the hook from employers battling to try and get me to work for them!

As for your asshat comment about paying for my own child?

For your information, I in fact do pay my child support, I pay it every single week taken directly out of my check. They take half of my paycheck every week, This does not bother me, it is my obligation, it is my duty, and it is going to my son. So I don't really have a problem with that. You assumed wrongly that I am some deadbeat dad who is skipping out on my obligation, you assumed this because you did not have all the facts. Well what do they say about assumptions?

Still, until the back child support is paid up, I will not be able to get my drivers license. It will take time, but I will catch up, thank you very much. I would love to have my drivers license back, I would love to have a CDL, I could probably get a good job driving a truck if I were just legally allowed to do so. But, unfortunately, without a CDL, trucking companies, school districts, or any other driving type of job are going to have a difficult time in hiring me because of that disadvantage.

It's just a little frustrating to work like I do, day in day out, no benefits, little pay, and see someone who makes in a week what I bring home in a month sitting on the couch watching TV because she has a personal day she wants to use.

She watches sopa operas and gets paid for it? Really? I doubt that. What happens is she gets off work before you do, makes more money than you and gets to watch TV when she is not working.
If she is given a salary that means she is not paid by the hour and is paid for getting her job done.

BS. I bet you 20 dollars that i could find you a fulltime job that pays well in under a week inside michigan. I bet you another 20 that you would not take it.

Assumed? No i know. I know that you get your licence taken away for not paying your child support. I know that your wages get garnished for not paying your child support. So you are not fulfilling your obligation on your own you are being forced to because you do not have a say in the matter.

I know all about our state's retardation. How stupid is it to cancel someone's license for not paying child support? Without a car, how is he supposed to work to pay it!!!

Why did they take your licence away?
Did you commit some kind of road/car related crime?

I really don't see what missing a Child support payment has to do with your licence or car?

Weird man...
