I think you should look up WHY those events took place in the first place.

When there is no military force and a country engages in free trade, there is little incentive for a nation to bomb or invade it.

It is interesting to note that the atrocities you mentioned were carried out by governments, not by private citizens.

In fact all of the major atrocities carried out in the history of man have been by governments.

A foreign nation would never be able to invade and subjugate the US if there was no military or regulation of private arms ownership.

No way in hell.

Atrocities nothing, I am a Socialist and a very peace-loving one at that, but I have seen my share of war and I do believe that once you are involved in a war (ideally when all other options are exhausted) there is a imperative to end it as quickly as possible in victory. If I were making the call I would have done the same thing to Dresden and Tokyo. I would have nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki as well.

I am British, and after Flanders Fields we became quite utilitarian when it comes to war.

Just because I hate war does not mean that I think we should fight with our hands tied.

As for the issue of government in war, well gee you seem to be proving my point for me there. Government military is usually superior to a partisan or private force.

You can cling to whatever delusions you like regarding the ideals of individualism and the invincible gun-owners of America but I'll just point again to history and ask what you could come up with that can stand up to a modern combined-arms onslaught?

Edit: Also who is talking about subjugation here but you? I've made it perfectly clear that the land not the people is the important thing here. You wouldn't be subjugated until the people of America would surrender and ask for it. As I said already, you, the individual would not matter to a military, you are simply a casualty.

You wouldn't need to worry about subjugation. The Native Americans were not subjugated until all of their warriors were dead in most cases, same idea here.

Point One: You're right, the tax man takes from everybody(sort of) and fills the coffers. The Fed then takes these pennies from Heaven and staffs its agencies with people who may or may not do any kind of socially redeeming job.

Point two: You're truly, sadly clueless, or living in some sort of post-apocalyptic fantasy. Its 2010, and we have a strange thing called "civilization". For everybody on the federal payroll that has some cushy, made-up make work job there are a dozen more who bust their butts day in and day out and try to do right by the (taxpaying)citizens of the U.S. of A.

As vocal as I am with how our dysfunctional government conducts itself, and I have the career dings to prove it, it chaps my ass to no end when the odd libertarian or three tells me to my face that I'm a "pirate", "thief", or whatever other reference you can pull out of your thesaurus. I take my job and my position of public trust very seriously. I drive my co-workers bat# reminding them that we're beholden to the American people to fulfill a mission, not sit around and eat donuts or whatever your predetermined life-script has us doing.

Since you appear to have a command of the English language, or at least "spell-check", I have to assume your post is in part bait intended to fish for comments or raise the ire of we few pathetic conformists that use and enjoy ATS. You missed your calling; You would've made a great lawyer. A real one I mean, not somebody that lives in mom's basement and fantasizes about going to law school so you can be a happenin' dude and get the hot ladies like on Boston Legal.

I will concede one point to your pathetic treatise; The U.S. Congress and the DMV. Those are universal miseries. Other than that, your post is pure crap. Crap crap crap, and not a roll in sight.

If you're really that worried about foreign powers then you can just hire your own private army.

You do have the problem though that others are benefiting from your protection without paying a penny.

No problem! You have an army, you can just demand taxes off them with your army. It practically pays for itself. Who's going to stop you?

Civilization requires being civilized.

Violence against the innocent is uncivilized.

It is those countries that have had the most economic liberties with the lowest State violence against the innocent (low taxes) that have prospered the most.

History is clear.

Violence against the innocent is wrong.

I apologize!

Not only do I work for Government, I work for Revenue!!

We don't use guns though, we take your Driver's license, freeze your bank account, suspend your passport and hunting licenses, take your medical practitioner license, tags, etc., etc.! (I work for Child Support Enforcement.) Rarely we will use the sheriff's department or a judge to issue a warrant, so I guess we are technically still armed criminals.

It's tough to paint all government employees with the same brush. If you worked for Internal Revenue you would, in fact, have your own little army of enforcers. They are called the CIS, Criminal Investigative Services, and will often accompany the ATF and the FBI in armed raids (don't ask me how I know this).

I personally do not have much problem with local and state government employees even though the ranks usually stink from nepotism and political favoritism. The USA was founded on the ideal of local government power. If a citizen doesn't like his local governance he could simply move to a different state or municipality.

My problem is that somewhere along the way the Fed got way too much power, exactly what many of the Founding Fathers feared would happen. Many of our Fed employees and entire institutions (not the Post Office for God's sake) are way too powerful and self-righteous and downright nefarious.

With my Master's Degree in hand and my 30 years of entrepreneurial, accounting and financial leadership on my resume I am still having trouble finding employment. It was suggested that I join the IRS who was hiring locally. I laughed at the suggestion and snarled "I would rather shovel s**t 24/7/365".

I am sure there are many good and honest hard-working feds but there are many bad ones too. Some are hungry for power. Some are just plain sadistic. Many cheat the populace as often as they can. I am sure they are in the minority but if you have ever been oppressed by one it will not feel that way to you.

If you are one of the good guys--GOOD for you! Keep on trucking, baby! Maybe you can fix the problem from the inside some day. I am always the optimist!

as much as I hate how our government conducts itself and all the corruption within it (drug war for example), you are really thinking of a pipe dream to not have any at all.

I think you need to direct your energy into fixing the broken aspects of the government instead of abolishing the whole thing.

yea social security and medicare sucks to pay for all the time, specially when there are people gaming the system, but if there is a system there will always be someone to cheat it. However at the same time, you could be in your mid twenties doing well for yourself feeling fully capable, then all of a sudden you get seriously injured and cant work again the rest of your life? are you willing to be left for dead? I doubt it, you'll be begging to get on the social security train.

roads, schools, and all other infrastructure, I really hope you dont complain about paying for these as we need them, I know you use them, and they cost a LOT to maintain.

and do you REALLY think we could defend ourselves without an army? what a joke. This isnt revolutionary times anymore, troop counts really dont matter. The only reason insurgents succeed is because we're civilized enough to let them basically. If china/ north korea/iran decided to conquer us, do you really think theyd let citizens live long enough to form insurgent groups? No, they would just completely obliterate every city and all citizens in the country, through nukes or artillery or whatever means they felt necessary.

so on that subject I would say a more reasonable solution would be for us to quit spending such rediculous amounts on the military, but at the same time there are a bunch of crazy people in the world still who HATE us.

Also, like it or not, if there was no government, SOMEONE will take power, like gangs, oil companies, etc. Thats just the way it is, and if you think the gov is bad just imagine how much worse it would be with a cartel or major company ruling everyone with an iron fist forcing you into slavery.

so become a lawyer, join respective political groups that have the same ideals as you, go to rallys, protest, call your representatives and push to have the bad laws/workers/agencies/programs removed.

In other words, you do have the power to try and fix the system into something respectable , not remove it completely.
