BERLIN -- An explosion ripped through a house in Cologne, injuring 16 people Wednesday, and officials said they believed the blast was caused by a bomb.

The explosion happened at about 4 p.m. on a shopping street in the suburb of Muelheim, police said.

"We are treating this as a bomb explosion," police spokesman Burkhard Jahn told The Associated Press.

Jahn said he had no immediate details on who might have carried out an attack or why.

A spokesman for the Cologne fire department, Stefan Lakenbrink, said 16 people were injured, including four seriously. One was in critical condition.

The bomb contained more than 1000 nails in addition to the explosive material. No one has claimed responsibility, and at this time police have not indicated any suspects.

Four of the 22 people are seriously injured, with one in critical condition.

The neighborhood the blast occured in reportedly has a large Turkish community, and security officials are looking into a possible Turkish or Islamist connection.

You might very well be right. The UK had a series of nail-bomb attacks a few years ago, cuased by a far-right sympathiser.

More news on the nail-bomb.

The bomb exploded outside a three-story house located in a street where the majority of inhabitants are Turkish, German television channel N-TV said, citing unidentified people at the site of the explosion. The bomb consisted of a device filled with more than 1,000 nails and injured 16 people, several of them severely, N-TV said.

Trial "run" by terrorists. Unfortunatly for them the arming device failed and the bomb went off in their own "safehouse".

Maybe Neo Nazi's but if they are Turks I would have to kind of rule that out.

There are Arabs and Muslims in Turkey. Guess which ones these were ????

Anybody care to guess where Mohammed Atta's "friends" are from the Terror Cell he belonged to ??? Remember his "cell" was in Germany.

Anyone ????

Now Reuters are reporting that the perpatrators of the supected nail-bomb explosion may have Turkish criminal/terrorist links

www.reuters.co.uk...ion=news

COLOGNE, Germany (Reuters) - A suspected bomb has wounded at least 17 people at a building in Cologne on Wednesday, one of them critically, German emergency services say.

"We are assuming it was a bomb explosion," a police spokesman said on Wednesday. There were no indications of a motive and no warning was given before the blast, which might have been caused by a nail bomb.

Emergency services found a large number of nails in the area, the police spokesman said.

A Reuters witness at the scene, in Cologne's Muelheim district, said police had cordoned off the area after the blast, which damaged house fronts and destroyed cars.

Fire services said the explosion in a three-storey residential and business building wounded at least 17 people. One person was in a critical condition, a spokesman said.

He said the blast was either in a pizza restaurant or a neighbouring hairdressing salon.

A German security source said the Muelheim district has a large Turkish population.

"It could be organised crime... it could be a Turkish action because the area is Turkish. Or it could be Islamist," he told Reuters. "At the moment it is completely open."

Cologne, Germany's fourth-largest city, has large Turkish and Kurdish communities.

It is also home to radical Islamist preacher Metin Kaplan. A court decided last month that Kaplan, the head of a militant Islamist group, could be extradited to his native Turkey to face treason charges.

You heared a lot of wrong stuff. The incidents in the last 10 years on foreigners, foreign institutions and especially on jewish objects and people were mainly carried out by....Arabs and organized crime from Russia, China and arabian countries.

It's somehow funny that foreigners in Germany are battling themself and our country is labeled becoming more racistic again. *sickO*

Most probably it was just a pay-back action from a turkish or russian opponent. Especially russians and turks aren't drinking tea together here in cologne

A few weeks before we had a double-murder here in Cologne. The married africans leave a child behind. It turned out it was a murder carried out by the nigerian mafia in connection with drug dealing.

But...

Germany's problem with a small percentage of their youth, mostly poor and uneducated, many from the former DDR, low on chances in life, turning to neo-Nazism, is nothing new. Many violent incidents the past decade were racial-related. Thinking that it's only Arabs and organized crime who's to blame is wrong, as is thinking that Germany is a Nazi empire doing rebuilding.

The German neo Nazi movement is small in percentage to the population but nothing to joke with. Their network structures are close to organized-crime and are in general involved in it, for example the illegal arms market. Furthermore are known to be extremely violent, cowardly, capable of murder and willing to attack targets with many casualties. Usage of explosives is also known to happen.

Speaking in favor of the German youth and people, the Anti Fascist Action (AFA) is large and very outspoken in Germany. Protests against extreme right are not always peaceful. Extreme right is not accepted in German society and in general should be seen as a direct product of social-economic issues.

A bomb attack in Cologne that injured 22 people likely was the work of criminals and not a terrorist group, Germany's top security official said Thursday.

"Indications are that it was not terrorists, but the criminal underworld," Interior Minister Otto Schily told reporters after meeting with his French counterpart Dominique de Villepin in a German border city to discuss security issues.

yea, the word is that it was another "hit" from an African drug cartel. And might be connected to the double homicide a week ago.

That's true and you elaborated absolutley right about its cause. You have lived in Germany for quite a time or just a very good political interest?

When it comes to violent incidents there isn't "much" coming from the nazi scene and a lot more violence from foreigners on foreigners. Information about this is very nice summarized in the yearly publications of the "Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution" called "Verfassungschutz"(VS) which monitors the nazi scene and other extremists and fundamentalists.
When it comes to incidents which remain non-violent the nazi scene is on a small rise, in those regions where unemployment is high and education still lacks quality.

Associated Press - Germany Offers Reward for Bomb Clues
German authorities offered a $24,000 reward Friday for clues in a bombing that injured 22 people. They said they were seeking a man believed to have parked a bicycle on which the bomb may have been placed.

Experts were still determining the type of explosive and the mechanism used, police spokeswoman Gudrun Haustetter said. But the Berlin newspaper Der Tagesspiegel quoted unnamed security sources as saying that the bomb was built using a natural gas cylinder and detonated by remote control.
