I have an issue with the first video, mainly because it must be using some arbitrary definition of atheism.

For example, it put's Denmark as 80 percent atheist, and yet 80 percent of the danish population is a member of the danish state church and pay a church tax... That does not make sense.

I would argue that the peacefulness of the nordic countries is the result of protestantism, social democratic policies and the size of the countries in question.

These countries are mostly protestant, but have high degree of seperation of church and state. Religion is considered a private issue, and not one to be discussed in public, in the media or in politics.

Additionally, someone mentioned that Hitler killed 6 to 10 million people... No, Hitler was directly or indirectly responsible for upwards of 50 million deaths. He was directly responsible for atleast 11 million in the camps and another 4 million prisoners of war deaths.

Apparently they're ignoring the 100 million plus people that the atheist communist Russians and Chinese killed off?

No, I only use it on my cape

There is also a Humanist symbol. There is also a Spiritual Living symbol.

Would you recognize either of the last 2?

I am familiar with the humanist symbol but not the spiritual living one. I'll have to look that up.

I doubt the average religious person would know it is a symbol for Atheism.

Lucky me. I'm in the bible belt. They don't take kindly to my kind in these here parts.

I know there is an Atheist symbol. I was just presenting a scenario.

Probably only other Atheists would recognize an Atheist symbol.

I have a Spiritual Living sticker on my car. People look at it weird - but don't know what it is.

LOL
- I have always been thankful I was born and raised in SOCA near the Los Angeles beaches. Pretty much everything is accepted and no one bothers you.

But - I've been in SW AZ for 20 years. You could pick this place up - stick it in the bible belt and no one would notice the difference. Its like living in a time warp. And not in a good way.

Please read through the thread a bit first.
This has been discussed thoroughly.

The only possible way you could refute that would be to either claim that the communist Chinese and Russians were not atheists or that they didn't kill 100 plus million people.

Either way you're full of # so there's no use and hunting through the thread to see exactly what the bull# you're spewing is.

Since you're unwilling to look and instead wish to express yourself like a disrespectful wretch, you are more than welcome to find some other thread to participate in. Good day to you.

The soviets were never atheist, they just replaced one religion with another. In the USSR, it was the great prophet Lenin, ushering in the socialist system which would lead to communism, a great new society with equality and afluence for all. They even built Lenin a mausoleum where the soviet people would visit to pay tribute to their prophet.

Socialism and communism is every bit a religious system, it just has different tenets. It has prophets(Marx, Lenin etc.) It has a unifying concept equal to a god(A great truth, that capitalism was going to wither away and lead to a just and egalitarian society for all), it has the jihad/fundamentalist movement(revolution) and it promisses you a reward(progress and greater equality for your children), and the means to achieve it is using the wisdom of the prophets(The writings of Marx and Lenin).

Probably not - - but all three are recognized by the military for grave markers.

I'm not that religious but more of a social psychologist in nature, but the funny thing is that even though Atheists lack some observable sign in general it seems I still know who all within my circle of friends and acquaintances happen to be Atheist.

Why do you think that is so?

Well, by the same logic, atheists are not really atheists:

prophets ✓ (e.g. Dawkins)
unifying concept equal to a God ✓ (a dream of humanism, scientific advancement & world peace--supposedly)
jihad/fundamentalist movement ✓ (e.g. atheists hanging out outside colleges handing out PlayBoys for Bibles)
promises you a reward ✓ (progress and greater equality for your children)
means to achieve it is using the wisdom of the prophets ✓ (The writings of Dawkins, Darwin, Marx, etc.)

oh no he didn't..

You guys are aware that the symbol in my signature is one of the symbols chosen by atheists to identify themselves? It's the "American Atheist".

So what does it represent, and do Atheists feel the need to mirror religious symbols with their own? I wonder…do you think in a 1000 years people might pray to it?

Those blinded with cynicism are the people who have never experienced Communism, yet think they know better than those who experienced it.

You need to understand what I'm trying to say before you comment.

the fact that Marx, and apparently you, agree that Socialism must be forced on people

Same goes. Until then, we cannot have this debate. I do not believe that socialism should be forced on anyone. I am NOT communist. I am not endorsing communism. My POV has apparently shot right over your head, because you are stuck in a rut. Look at it from the other side...(why). Blinded with cynicism...

To sum it all up, it's evil, horrible, perverse people that are the cause of massive deaths, and NOT atheism, and communism was not intended for murder, as you seem to believe, but peace and fairness. We know it doesn't work. You're putting blame in the wrong hands.

Here's a question for you to ponder: How many people, with modern technology and all, do you think would have died if the Inquisition was just getting started?

How about this...religion led many people to BURN their fellow men and women and children. Watching torturing and death for amusement. Inventing new ways to tear flesh and crush tissue and bone. All devised by religious people. RELIGIOUS PEOPLE. Therefore, religious beliefs are the most dangerous, unethical, view-humans-as-machines, thing in the world!!!! Suffering is religion's speciality.

And no, I don't really believe that, but there is no difference in the logic used here, and yours.

Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction

Why is it that people who do evil things and are atheist it seems their lack of religion is not to blame, but when people who do evil things and are not atheist then their religion is to blame?

I would not be so sure, and I would not start the who has done the most evil act game if I were you.

The bottom line is religion throughout history has drifted away from its intended teachings in some really nasty directions, but it tends to always drift back to a foundation of ethics, but the times that we see real horrendous events that do not have any ethical foundation to realign back to nasty events really get out of control.

Case in point: Cambodia in the 1970s saw this when 2 to 3 million were killed over a period of a few years. Killed really doesn’t do them justice though. I visited a school that was once ran by nuns, who were all killed and the children were taught/used to torture people do death.

Even today in Darfur millions have died over greed and control of warlords that have created a true hell on earth without the help of religion to either cause it or guild them away from it.

That is an interesting observation. So how does a religious person pick out an Atheist to bother?

i dont know how a christian can tell if ones an athiest from ones looks, sometimes we wear a capitol A,
but i can spot a christian from a considerable distance there seems to be a trend of a light beard, glasses and short spiky hair

not saying every christian looks like that though it is very common especially where i live
