Pirates threaten boats on US-Mexico border lake

apnews.myway.com

ZAPATA, Texas (AP) - The waters of Falcon Lake normally beckon boaters with waterskiing and world-record bass fishing. But this holiday weekend, fishermen on the waters that straddle the U.S.-Mexico border are on the lookout for something more sinister: pirates.

Twice in recent weeks, fishermen have been robbed at gunpoint by marauders that the local sheriff says are "spillover" from fighting between rival Mexican drug gangs.

Now we have reports of folks being hit by pirates when bass fishing or pleasure boating.

I doubt that this is drug gang violence - the level of take inb robbing some gents bass boat is just not worth it. These are just common every day Mexican thugs.

The issue is one of border encroachment. The violence hits near the US border and once and a while over the water. Folks start staying away from the border then the violence moves and folks stay farther away from the border and so on.

Yes, the US fishermen should not go into Mexican waters, although the hyprocracy of the Mexican's giving a rip about that is unbelievable.

Lets put a Coast Guard boat on that border and blow these folks out of the water

I'm going to be interested to see what happens during this memorial day weekend... Lots of tourists and weekend get away folks....

Then again, maybe numbers like those would make the thugs cower like the vermin they are?

Boats and booze and guns and the pirates with assault weapons could make for a disaster.

Interesting how now that this has become a top national news story, more reports continue to come out about how dysfunctional this border really is.

i have pacifist tendencies...but sure you must understand that you are not going to hug thieves into not thieving, right?

I am surprised this is a problem in Texas. We always carried a pistol on board when we boated.
