Someone told me about this story today, and sure enough it's real. This is how it happens: they put cameras up in intersections and everyone gets used to it. Then they put them in crime ridden areas, and people get used to that. Next thing you know cameras are everywhere, including hundreds of hidden cameras in every neighborhood in the US as being proposed by "HoodEyes.com".

This spring, deputies will begin using 20 cameras mounted on utility poles to zoom in on the University Area's trouble spots.
...
The cameras can provide clear images of license plates three blocks away. They can show whether a quarter on the sidewalk landed heads or tails. And they can see into darkness using infrared technology.

Even when not monitored by humans, they will record around the clock, with the video stored for review days or weeks later.

"Who wouldn't want a cop standing on your corner?" said Maj. J.R. Burton, the commander for the sheriff's district covering the University Area. "That's essentially what you've got now with the video camera on that corner."

A $1.3 million federal grant paid to install the cameras, a first for the Sheriff's Office, in an area bounded by N 23rd Street and Fowler, Bearss and Nebraska avenues. www.tampabay.com...

While trying to find this story I stumbled upon this "HoodEyes" outfit:

The neighborhoods of Tampa have to be protected and it's always important to have eyes all over the neighborhood. Notify your neighborhood association about having these eyes installed throughout your Tampa neighborhood. With one life to live, it's important to protect yourself as well as your neighbors.

Hello Tampa! It just takes one time for someone to break into a home, destroy the home, and commit murder. Once this is complete, it's done, no going back and saying, Gee! I wish I had protected my home, myself, and my family. In Tampa, neighborhoods have to work together and do what it takes to protect their home. An Tampa home is the same as any home in any neighborhood across the Country and it needs to be protected. Come on Tampa, it's good to have a home security system, but is this the final answer? No! We need to protect our Tampa streets and Tampa neighborhoods by installing our Hood Eyes around the whole neighborhood. These eyes will give everyone the opportunity to feel better and safe.

Here's an example Tampa! Let's say there's a bunch of teenagers in the street fighting and it's getting worse by the minute. Well, first thing you do is contact your local Tampa police department. Well, if it's not a murder or a cop hurt, then there's no telling how long they'll take to get there. With hood eyes installed all around the neighborhood, this will be monitored by a local representative and the neighborhood hoodeye security will get there within minutes. Not only is the best way to do it but everything will be on camera! When the real police get there, all problems have been solved.

The people of Tampa asks, How is this paid for? Well, with neighborhood association fees, a couple of dollars here and there will pay for what's needed to make the neighborhoods of Tampa safe. We need these camera devices and security patrol in every neighborhood across the Country. If a murder or crime is committed, then it's too late! You cannot do anything about the situation if it's already occurred. These hood eyes will prevent the crime or murder from ever happening. We need to stand up to the associations and demand that security is needed in every neighborhood, no matter how fancy, how rich, how poor, or how run down it is! Wake up Tampa and have the hood eyes in every neighborhood!
tampa.hoodeyes.com...

Whether it's nighttime or daytime, crimes will always be committed. Security systems do work, to a certain extent! With our camera eyes placed in hundreds of locations, we're always watching your neighborhood. If a crime is being committed, we will no about it, within seconds.

With contracts with neighborhood associations across the Country, our system allows everyone the convenience of having this 24 hour a day security without any hassles and just costing dollars. Any suspicious activity within a neighborhood will be reported within seconds as well as recorded for future evidence. We have become the top neighborhood watch across the Nation.

When you browse through their site you see every state and city listed, where they're trying to get this in place.

"EE Nation" is some inconspicuous 'spam' looking site that is linked to a ton of other sites:

But another interesting one is "ReaperEyes.com:

Whether it's in a nightclub, restaurant, or casino, Reaper eyes will be watching you! With partners across the Country, we're able to put cameras in spots untouchable and not noticed. These cameras will have a live stream, allowing dispatchers to notice something out of the ordinary. If someone looks intoxicated, the police will be notified and they will be going to jail! www.reapereyes.com...

Hmm. Perhaps the HoodEyes thing is a dead end, but the fact is Homeland Security is now creeping into residential neighborhoods via these police cameras and it won't stop there with the public so limber.

It's amazing what you can do with a little clothing and a paintball gun, right?

We're moving towards a 'Big Brother' attitude and it's very scary. It breaks my heart that the American people are allowing this to happen. Just another reason why I live like a gypsy. Constantly on the move.

Coming from someone who lives in TAMPA!! Those are the worst areas, we have people getting shot, robbed, drive by's!! If people would take responisbility for their actions and do good instead of bad, we wouldnt need big brother to watch our every move...besides that we have a college in that area called USF (University of South Florida) We need to protect our college students from these hoodlums that run those streets selling drungs and killing eachother! Do you know over 35,000 car accidents a year are due to ignorant people who run red lights? Did you know almost HALF ARE DEADLY?! Since they installed those camera's there has been less accidents... It might be an extreme to set up camera's BUT GUESS WHAT?! THEIR WORKING! and unfortunetly there are bad apples that spoil it for everyone else!!

Ok, so 35,000 a year means 300,000,000 people all face being monitored by police?

Could you show some statistics of what the improvements are?

How about the ignorant people who could have avoided the accident if they were themselves paying attention?

Let me guess, you're one of the people described by the cop as 'Who wouldn't want a cop standing on their corner'?

You don't mind one of these outside your house able to look into your windows and see what's going on even in the dark, being watched by both the local police and the federal Homeland Security?? You don't mind having cameras track you from the time you leave your driveway until you get to wherever it is you're going, including unflattering things / places?

We have those cameras mounted at various locations in the town where
I live. There is one mounted in each direction. The only reason they are
there is this. When the traffic is very low, the cameras tell the timers to
switch to green instead of staying on red for quite awhile.. This lets traffic
move through an intersection more smoothly. If there is a lot of traffic,
the timers stay at a certain period of time for each direction.

I am sure that these cameras can do other things, such as validate stories
during a traffic accident, but they are mostly for keeping the traffic moving
more evenly.

Oh and actually tampa is close to population of a MILLION! So yes a few bad apples spoil the bunch, but its to make things safer, how is that a bad thing? If your not doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about...Those areas that are discribe in the op are REALLY REALLY BAD areas!! You have no idea how BAD those areas are..... Im glad! Tampa use to be a nice place to live... but now its turning into a SH*T HOLE!
And thats sad!

Are you sure that's the "only reason"? Where do you get this idea? Here we have intersections that I know for a fact operate very smoothly and efficiently, quite complex actually, without any cameras. All they need are sensors int eh road. Ask yourself why there would be sensors in the road and cameras above (many have both, or one or the other).

So, since a few blocks of a metropolitan area are crime ridden then that justifies when in a couple years they'll have these creeping in everywhere?

You sort of dodged our first statistical exchange...

So you're telling me that you don't mind police and feds being able to look into your windows in the dark and see you or your family members nude???

And what about tyrannical laws? In a free society, where we're told we're free but we're not, people shouldn't be able to use their own judgment and risks about laws they don't agree with as long as they aren't hurting other people?

These are our HOMES we're talking about here. This isn't the sidewalk in downtown anymore. This isn't the intersection. People should have the dignity to do unflattering things with total privacy.

Please don't just rant, and answer some of these questions directly. I'd give you the courtesy.

Britain is full of cameras on every street in almost every major town.
On every road and every corner, on the buildings in every street.
Why?
To prevent crime and terrorists so good on them

These questions are for StarGazer too:

Ok, how far is too far? Apparently you don't mind being monitored and tracked every moment you spend outside of your home... how about listened to? Should they also listen to every possible thing you say? What if you want to talk dirty to your lady/man? You don't mind perverts listening in on it?

What about inside your home? Have cameras and microphones in there listening and watching that? Which rooms are sacred? WHAT is to remain sacred, anymore? And is it worth it? How many times were YOU mugged before and after the cameras? Out of your entire population, what percentage died per year from terrorism?

Calm down chilout I can see by your expression as your typing you care passionately about this subject, but its happenned.
The next step already planned is to put organic chips into our neurol circuits so we can be bombarded with information, whenver we think creatively a commercial for hair spray will be beamed into our brains.

P.S You really should comb that hair sheesh

Well, those were serious questions. You say good, but how much have you thought it thru? Where should it end? And now, will you be ok with the brain implants?

Not if they broadcast hair commercials(I will be bald then) but Erotic movies may be good?
No I would not be happy I agree with what you say, but it is too late.
Freedom can still be found within, but once the chips come , it will be almost impossible to meditate and travel into reality.
Freedom of thought is what God gave us, and he allows freedom of action, some abuse this we all have for none of us is free from sin.
But the chips will remove our freedom and thus make us bound to man.
The terrible thing is in a century or less there will be people who dont know anything else than Chips.
Who have thought s shaped and created by software broadcast into their brain circuits.
They will never know about freedom, but wil probably if they ever tasted it think it wild and bad.
They will deem us as barbarians those who couldnt control their thoughts and actions.
Then they in hell will live believing they are in heaven

Sir, I can see this makes you angry. And Im sorry you feel that way, and in a sense it makes me angry too.... When society has become so bad that they have to set up these cameras to keep an extra eye out on people, then thats really sad. This sure isnt the 50's anymore. When the THUG LIFE mentality is at the heart of every city, then there needs to be an extra eye out. I have a 2 year old daughter, if Im walking down the street with my child and someone runs up behind me and trys to snatch my purse knocking me down to the ground and possibliy hurting my child my mind would be frantic and I probably wouldnt remember his/her face but could discribe his clothes, then these camera would come in handy. If Im leaving a grocery store and someone hijacks my car and take off with me in it, I would like for someone to be able to see the man and my license plate to help try to find me... As a woman my guard is always up and thats sad. What ever happened to a nice smile and wave hello? What happened to men opening doors for women? What happened to men protecting us? Instead their are alot of crazy people out there and I say men specifically because no matter how I would like to slice it a man can over power me in a second! I might stand a chance with a crazy women, but a man.... no way! I've been in an abusive relationship with a short guy and thought that since I was taller I could over power him if I needed too... THAT WAS NOT THE CASE!! For a short guy he sure was extremely strong!! Stronger then me anyways, so these camera's will help with saftey issues.

Guess what?

They were here before any of us knew who Obama was. Big brother government is big brother government and it sure did not start with him.

What if this has nothing at all to do with Big Brother? We keep hearing about Tampa lately. Oil is coming to Tampa. It's gonna rain oil in Tampa. Tampa is going to be evacuated. Now cameras in Tampa.

What if the oil does make it to Tampa and the Feds already know it? Maybe the cameras are set up so they can see how the lab rats react.

you ask how far is to far? You ask how sacared our my conversations? You want to know if it bothers me that they can listen on my conversations?? Well, Im not a terrorist, so on the average I think my conversations are slightly boring! I talk about bills that need to be paid, how broke my family is, how I was denied foodstamps because I "MAKE TO MUCH MONEY @ 9.50/hr when my rent alone is almost 700$!" I talk about how I need to clean out my fridge do dishes, and laundry. I talk about how my 2 year old child pooped in the tub, I talk about my job and how rude some people are... I doubt they pay any attention to my house/conversations when they see how boring I am. As far as cameras in my home??... ARE U SERIOUS? Please?! Oh and if they want to listen in to any dirty talk to my man they will be waiting ALONG TIME! The only dirty talk they will hear is how I tell him to leave the room when he farts! LOL If they listen to 5 minutes of a conversation with my bestfriend who COMPLAINS and B*tches about everything BELIVE ME they will shoot themselves in the head! Sometimes I want too LOL
