Yes! You must salute the lapel pin flag! I'm sure there's a law about that around here somewhere... let me see...

edit - wait, what if there are two lapel pin flags and they are on Bill Oreilly and Katie Couric?

I know bashing Obama is the popular thing to do right now. The Obama bashers are so smart that the backdrop of this event became the key topic. That's what I always look for when somebody is making a speech...

It's great to be an American! In this country when somebody has 10 flags behind them, they must be saying something right!

Would you say "Oh, it's just a piece of cloth, it doesn't mean anything."

Really? Do you see the point yet? It DOES mean something. And the fact that it is MISSING means something as well, so it IS A BIG DEAL. It is intentional, it is a carefully crafted image that has a purpose that I am not comfortable with.

You are one of the most ludicrous, ridiculous posters I've ever seen on this site!

Can you imagine the kind of competition you are up against? Yet you come top. I suppose that's an achievement of sorts.

What the hell, I'll throw down again before I get some dinner.

You're from the UK, are ya? Your words have no sway in this matter because you've already bent over and given up the rights that we still have (if however few). I'm sure I speak for a lot of US Citizens when I say that we will not be bent over quite as easily as you have been.

Otherwise I guess you're entitled to disagree, unless that is illegal in the UK as well.

No offense. After we all get done sparring on this thread, let's go get a Newcastle Brown Ale. My fave. (I'll probably get flamed for that, too)

Surely you didn't make this post and think that you would not be flamed. So many on this site are kin to or know someone that gave their life for that "piece of cloth". I gave ten years of my life for that flag and my job today involves protecting the Constitution and that flag.
You have the freedom to post your "sarcasm" because of the sacrifices that I and thousands of others made. You should really enjoy this freedom, I don't think that you will have it for much longer.

Again, I have to say that I thought they gave their lives for freedom, not a flag. Not one of the veterans I know or am related to has ever once told me that what they fought for was fabric printed in China. They talk about liberty, saving people, stopping evil, etc. It seems kind of insulting to reduce the truly heroic causes these men fought and died for to something made in China and sold to people who have barely a clue what it really means.

Huh? What are you implying? Should I report you to the authorities for planning a shooting spree?

...and again.

You know Dave, we still have the first amendment for the time being. Are you a fan of the unconstitutional patriot act? Are you a thought cop? Purchasing ammunition from WalMart is completely legal, but talking about it is some kind of crime? Is that what you're implying? Making inferences to how someone might use ammunition is an actionable offense now?

If you read my post carefully, I didn't make ANY inferences to how ammo should be employed. See, ammo has been in short supply lately and it's now back on the shelves, so anyone wanting to GET SOME might want to make haste.

Cop wannabes...

On another note, I have to wonder if anyone would have even noticed the absent flags if he hadn't been in front of those LOUD ass yellow drapes.

I could care less how many flags he has behind him. That's my point. Trying to argue that the American President is unpatriotic because he has no flags behind him is ridiculous. Just rhetoric to distract people and fuel the fire.

Soon we shall see if he attends the reef laying.

This can't get any better for America!

When the Revolution Starts the US military is gonna side with the patriots!

You're argument would bear more weight if you knew that it was "wreath", not "reef". For God's sake, are you 5?

Obama Reef?

What struck me watching the press conference was not so much the 'absence' of a flag as the fact that America (after so many years) finally has a President that can string a sentence together and is a true world statesman.
It's not about flags, people. Do you think the E.T's will give a damn about some coloured cloth. Methinks not. When is the human race going to move on from patriotism and nationalism? One race, one planet. Cheers...

Here is an excellent youtube clip of the story behind the Star Spangled Banner and Francis Scott Key.

If you're an American and take the time to watch this clip, it will be impossible for you not to realize how much the American flag means to this country and the lives that have been sacrificed just to keep the flag flying.

We also have mods that enforce those, no need for backseat modding like you just shown, how about you react to the (non)topic, instead of attacking me, which is also against the rules on ATS.

I only gave my opinion.

I'm puzzled, just where did he attack you? It seems your the one trying to get something started.

I view the flag as a symbol of all the things that you mentioned and I believe that if you talk to your vet friends they will agree, I believe. You make a large assumption about people and their idea of the flag. But, I will agree that there are too many that have forgotten her symbolism and the price that was payed for what she represents. For what it's worth, my was made in America and has a national stock number (NSN), and it is hung upside down. I served for the right to do so.

Okay, you figured out what we knew all along. So now what??? Yes, he's making tons of reversals to everything. Yes, he's fulfilling a predestined role. Yes...He's nothing more than a puppet. The fact that we have security clearances that go higher than what the president is allowed to view should be a RED FLAG that something is wrong. Let me ask you...Do you think that any of this is accidental? Do you really think the PRESIDENT is the problem??? This is all sleight of hand and diversion. They've got the chess game completely played out as the ultimate winners in conquest for control, and right now, the American public are making the exact moves that have been anticipated by their much more clever enemies. This is becoming a WORLD GOVERNMENT. Need I repeat that?

If no one has figured this out yet, then let me rant.

Corporations own us. Every man, woman and child in America is owned by corporate interests where the U.S. is up for the highest bidder. Your tax dollars equate to slavery. The fact that you work for someone else means that you've volunteered yourself to abide and obey. Think about this...you can be arrested for putting a joint to your mouth and actually attend a trial to fight for your freedom, and yet, BP just took a big dump on our coasts and have been allowed to operate with impunity...THE COAST GUARD WAS ACTUALLY WORKING FOR THEM. Why haven't we arrested THOSE BANKERS who completely owned our economy, profited, and then booted millions of tax paying AMERICANS from their homes because they couldn't afford the inflation percentages that were unfairly placed upon them? They're calling the shots.

If this isn't obvious to you, then ask yourself, why do you choose to get out of bed every morning? Who's money are you earning? You've got an hourly wage or a salary, and regardless of what you think, the majority of your hard earned cash goes into the hands of some corporate fascist benefiting gratuitously from the service you perform.

"There you go Johnny," A pat on the back and a compliment from the boss. "We went ahead and gave you that raise you've been asking for,"

"Thanks boss." you look at your check and smile. Wow, you're now earning 10.00 more per hour and you make 2,500 every two weeks. Not bad, not great. Well, behind that 2,500.00 pay check is about 50,000 or more that the corporation that you work for earned from your eagerness to pay your bills, support your family, and have the mild comforts that anyone in your position should have. Then come the taxes. Yep. Now that you've been raped by your boss, the government feels that because you are breathing THEIR air, you should have to divvy a portion of your hard earned money because they provide you protection, security, and "liberty." SO FAR, THEY'RE DOING A BANG UP JOB. If I have to explain my point in that last line, then you haven't been paying attention for the last 9 years. Oh, and there's this little gem... So, lets do a recap of this paragraph with one little addition: The Corporations take from you as you work, then the govt. hits you with taxes, and then inevitably, you go back out to spend your money that goes into the hands of MORE CORPORATIONS so that you can have the "material things" that you can't seem to live without, and then they tax you again before you can walk out of the door with your purchase. Wow. It seems to me that corporations pretty much get...ALL OF OUR MONEY no matter what the circumstance may be. Hell, even after you DIE, they simply switch your debt to some member in your family. How's that for NO ESCAPE??? Checkmate.

Well, some of you say..."Duh, you gotta work to support the economy. How do you expect that society would continue without people who create industry?"

That's not the point nor the issue. Of course, everyone should try to contribute to benefit the "greater whole" when speaking of the world economy. However, I don't see a greater whole being benefited, Do YOU??? I see the worlds' hard earned cash going into the hands of about 1% of the population, who seem to make ALL THE RULES, CALL ALL THE SHOTS, AND KEEP US ALL IN A STATE OF HELPLESSNESS while litigating against us, destroying our environment and economy, and giving preferential treatment to corporations, bankers, and investors. And yet, you guys still cling to partisanship as if it makes a difference. DIVIDE AND CONQUER. It's working. You're falling for it hook, line, and sinker.

Your President Obama might just as well be a victim of circumstance...JUST LIKE YOU. Sure, he's considered the "elite," by us peasants...But, do you think that the real "elite" even consider him to be a "player?" Nope. He's following orders...plain and simple.

The partisanship thing is just a diversion people. That's it. That's all. You're being played. The angles are all figured out. And as long as they can keep you divided by your "political beliefs" that are quickly becoming more polarized, then you won't have the aptitude to look beyond that diversion to see the greater picture.

Much love to all...even the bankers, the corporate whores, and the world government.

Here's what Wikipedia says about the symbolic meaning of the US Flag.

The flag of the United States is one of the nation's most widely recognized symbols. Within the U.S. it is frequently displayed, not only on public buildings, but on private residences. It is also used as a motif on decals for car windows, and clothing ornaments such as badges and lapel pins. Throughout the world it is used in public discourse to refer to the U.S., not only as a nation, state, government, and set of policies, but also as an ideology and set of ideals.

It's legal to burn a cross.

Peace

Doubly wrong.

Wrong in stating what my friends would say. They believe that the things I mentioned cannot be won or lost by a piece of cloth. They will be the first ones to tell you that if that flag falls, burns, is taken, they do not lose their freedoms the instant that flag is no more.

Wrong in believing I do not already talk with my friends.

You make a large assumption about people and their idea of the flag.

Really? I am actually telling you what people HAVE SAID.

You are telling me what you think they would say. Who is assuming what?

Whatever makes you feel good. Tell you what. You speak for you. I will speak for me and my friends. Do not tell me what I assume when I am telling you what I KNOW. Do not tell me what you think people you do not know WOULD say when I told you what they DID say.

How about you tell me, do you think you lose your freedoms if you lose your flag?

Do you think America is no more if the flag were destroyed?

There are some things that are actually important. The symbol of our country is the American Flag. Every nation in this world has a flag of their own and flying it is the pride of every nation. As it should be.

I am from New Zealand, and my pride does not come from a flag. My pride comes from the things New Zealanders actually do, or have done in the past. What i think the States flag does is give people a false sense of pride - pride which stems from only what was done in the past.

If New Zealand was causing the trouble that the USA is, I would not be flying the flag that represents this trouble.
