'Top kill' halts flow of oil and gas, admiral says

Engineers have succeeded in stopping the flow of oil and gas into the Gulf of Mexico from a gushing BP well, the federal government's top oil spill commander, Adm. Thad Allen, said Thursday morning.

The so-called "top kill" effort, launched Wednesday afternoon by industry and government engineers in Houston, has pumped enough drilling fluid to block all oil and gas from the well, Allen said. The pressure from the well is very low, but persistent, he said.

Once engineers have reduced the well pressure to zero, they will begin to pump cement into the hole to entomb the well. To help that effort, he said, engineers are also pumping some debris into the blowout preventer at the top of the well.

Let's hope he is right!

WOOT!

EDIT:

I'm reading some reports that the Admiral's statement is premature. Let's hope this is just cautionary.

Accordingly, I've edited the title of this thread to reflect the uncertainty.

Excellent news if true! However looking at the live feed, I still see in the corner of the screen the brown stuff gushing out...

Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Finger's crossed.

If this is true, it will certainly put a lot of recent conspiracy threads to rest. No nuke, no end of the world

Would be great news if its true, I have one question after reading the article, with the force of the oil and gas leaving the pipe isnt it going to erode the mud away very quicly unless its 100% capped?

When the MUD is gone they are back to square one.

What you may be seeing is the drilling mud they pumped into the leak to stop the oil. They state that there is some pressure still in the well so the plug material will leak, and once they stop the oil itself they will encase the well in cement.

Then we'll bring the heads of BP up on charges. I wish...

apparently it will pump out mud until they're sure that the pressure is sorted out. maybe that's what the other thread was suggesting, where they said that it's just mud coming out now. But then, can we trust them?

Great!

What a ridiculous learning process for stopping a deep water leak.

At least we know what to do right away (next time) instead of a month later.

Let's hope we do better with clean up.

This is ATS, we don't even trust Mickey Mouse!!!

I'll bet you this incident will get it's own forum on ATS. With lots of conspiracy to keep us entertained for years...

It's about freaking time.
Let's hope it hold. Man every time I heard about the disaster. It turned my stomach

So, its working for now. Why did it take this long to implement this solution? Should this have been the first line of assault on this leak?

Oh so many questions....

Conveniently, this news comes just in time for Obamas first press conference in nearly a year. Obama.... Our hero... I can see the hands in the air right now...

Coincidence??
