WASHINGTON - Escalating his administration's response to the disastrous Gulf oil spill, President Barack Obama plans to announce Thursday that a moratorium on new deepwater oil drilling permits will be continued for six months while a presidential commission investigates, a White House aide said.

Controversial lease sales off the coast of Alaska will be delayed pending the results of the commission's investigation, and lease sales planned in the Western Gulf and off the coast of Virginia will be canceled, the aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity ahead of a midday Obama news conference.

He's still not doing enough, but this is a step, at least. He's supposed to visit the Gulf Friday. Not that that will solve anything, but at least he's not ignoring it anymore.

So a moratorium is going to do what? Oh yea, increase oil prices, I forgot that he is in bed with the oil dudes just like the old admin.

If he's planning to expand the green movement, he might want to ask Spain how that is working out for them first.

We need to pay more for gasoline. Everyone else is paying more and the fact that the government is in bed with the oil companies is what is keeping our prices low. The gov't needs to stop serving the oil companies. As Americans, we need to cut back on our usage.

thats great....but i dont have the money for what those socialists in europe pay. it would pretty much bankrupt me.

lets just run everyone out of the country too while we are at it with skyrocketing prices.

i cant believe you are foolish enough to come on ATS to advocate to make gas prices higher.

SCREW THE GREEN MOVEMENT.

if all of them are like you then its doomed to fail...and i will laugh and celebrate when it does.

You can cut back on your usage all you like.

Gasolina is not the problem, corrupt politicians and POTUS's are.

Thirty Gas-saving Tips

It's nothing to do with being foolish. It's about being practical. Why should other countries pay so much more that we do? So we can afford our Big Screen TVs and iPads?

They are MUCH worse than me!

Look, if you like living in the United States of British Petroleum, that's fine, but I don't.

Yeah, we need to pay more for gasoline. Sure. Come down here to the rural south and try telling that to the people who are barely getting by as it is.

i hate to say it buts hes right fule gas oil coal should be 4 times the price it is.
you couldnt afford the gas you say? get ride of that 40k car and buy a air car they sell them right out of California with 12k and 3k more for modifications you NEVER need to stop for gas again dont need to plug it in dont need to figer out super tek fulecells and this car is being sold NOW.
we are all a bunch of bull every last one of us look up the land speed records for the last 100 years in 1922 the car that held it didnt RUN on gas or any kind of fule like it.
It was steam powered a 100 years agaio we had other tek.
even that would work just fine now and with modern tek you dont need a boiler even but hey got to have my v8.
as soon as the prices drop its right back to the hummers we go .4 wheel drive monsters that are lucky to get 8 feet to the gallon.
mean wile we destroy the very world we live in to the point we cant breath the air drink the water or grow a thing in the soil
and when your on your last dieing breath you wont be asking for a drink of water but instead a drop of oil

Oh I can just see the summer gas price gouging now without an ability to expand, I'm glad some folks here like Beneveolant Heretic are made of money and able to afford 15 or 20$ a gallon for gas however the rest of us like being able to go to work and keep food on the table and rent/mortgage payments made. If gas prices were to tomorrow rise to what some have actually hoped for I think collapse of the country would take about 48 hours top before the entire thing went belly up, so keep on hoping!.

I'm not made of money. On the contrary, I'm VERY frugal! But my financial situation is not relevant.

How to Europeans and Canadians manage? Global Gas Prices

It wouldn't take long. People are living in fantasy land if they believe that the average working class American making $10-12 an hour in the local factory can afford a $5 per gallon increase in the cost of gasoline to put us in line with the $7-8/gallon prices in Europe. That's about $3,000 per year in additional expenses per driver in the family...and that's not considering the inflationary pressures on most all other items as a result of shipping costs.

That's one advantage of urbanization. Driving distances will generally be shorter. The average US state has a population density far below the population densities of Western European countries.

Canada is a bit of an oddball given its geographic size, but then again, most of the population is concentrated in the extreme south near the border.
