Lawmaker: Obama to send 1,200 troops to border

www.azcentral.com

TUCSON - An Arizona congresswoman says the Obama administration will announce that it will send as many as 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to improve border security.

Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords also says in a statement Tuesday that President Barack Obama will request $500 million in funding for border security.

I guess the game of chicken has been won by the governor of Arizona.

She send the administration several letters requesting help and they ignore them. Now that the public is aware of the problem and the polls are supportive of tighter control, the troops come.

1,200 is a lot of troops. Be interesting to hear the spin on what they are going to be doing. Probably something "that has been in the works for some time"

1200 is NOT a lot of troops. There have been nights in Arizona where Border Patrol agents were forced to watch more than that amount run past them in a single evening.

The border is too porous for 1200 troops to do much of anything with, they will keep moving around and finding ways in. Now, if we were to pull troops in from overseas we might have something there. Nothing like having combat vets fighting our homeland border wars. THAT might help put a stop to it.

Ah about frikin time, he finally got his Head out of his arse.

I guess he finally read the Arizona Law.

Though this number is not enough, the national guard would be more capable handling criminal behavior & if weapons need to be used to deter behavior.

There were more kids in my High-school.

1200 is nothing and will do nothing.

I don't see this as any progress. The troops are only being sent as a PR stunt by this administration and nothing more.

Everyone knows where Obama's stance is on the Arizona law so why should anyone think that this deployment of troops is going to make any difference. The only thing I can see is that the military will override local and state authority.

I don't see Obama climbing out of bed with the Calderon.

Soloist, who more than right. 1200 troops is not a drop in the bucket that's required unless it's fire warning shots to halt and shoot to kill when fired upon. I'd prefer the later.

the 1,200 troops that President Øbama is going to reluctantly send to the border, will be about the size of two porta-potty battalions.

the only mess the socialist Pres. Øbama, will want to clean up is the human waste problems & diseases the illegal traffic is causing, especially in a very few heavily traveled corridors into the USA.

go ahead Øbama, get that striking paper brigade in place...

It takes time for the DOD to get federal orders ready for the guard, this is only the first wave. Just be patient, paperwork and planning takes awhile.

The federal administration has flinched.

While it may be wholly inadequate, it is a beginning.

Which is far more than we had yesterday.

The Federal government is supposed to SERVE the States... as so astutely put above.... it's about frickin time.

Obama seems to really hate a well informed public because then he has to do good sensible things which interferes greatly with his corrupt anti-American agandas.. As we see every day lately....
so sad..

Its a start. Now lets get it done so some of these people on the border can sleep at night. Until it actually happens its all talk.

I think people are just skeptical until it actually happens. All of the lies and false promises have jaded the American people.

The length of the US-Mexico border is 1969 Miles. Meaning they will have 1 soldier for every 3.28 miles, assuming 2 soldiers per post each working 12 hour shifts.

Yeah. Big impact that'll have. Whoop de freaking doo.

500 million dollars is 1/1400 of the banker bailout, so I guess it's pretty obvious where the real priorities are. While I think encouraging states like Arizona is better than sending the army, 1200 is a pretty laughable number to be patrolling the entire U.S./Mexican border. They should just encourage states to handle the problem.

When people start doing things according to the constitution and follow sensible common sense agendas, then noone would complain, except for the corruption loving folks, which constitutes 7/8ths of the current ptb

And you are complaining at the complainers, but not doing anything else to help make things better, then you also suck

So are you or are you not for mobilizing our troops to the arizona border?

Wow! I wasn't expecting that. Hey, it's a start. Maybe they will send more troops in time. Arizona has suffered enough. Between their new law and more border control, hopefully these thigs will make a difference.

It's nothing but PR. It's just as easy to un-deploy those troops as it is to deploy them. There will not be as much fanfare when those guardsmen are removed as when they are deployed. Whenever the government wants to look like it's doing something about the border, you see measures like these that are half-hearted and totally reversable. The only permanent action the government will take will be amnesty. IMO, here's what we need at the border:

50 ft. inside the border, warning signs. 100 ft. inside the border, 20 yds. of razor wire. Beyond that, a 100 yd., state-of-the-art minefield. Then, the finishing touch, a barrier that would make the Great Wall of China look like a picket fence. A concrete structure rising 40 ft. above ground and 50 ft. below. Wide enough for a 4 lane highway to accomodate roving patrols going between manned outposts spaced every 10 miles apart, or within visual range, whichever is closer. The wall should have the necessary electronics to detect tunnels.

Just think of the jobs that would created constucting and manning that. It would probably be enought to drop the unemployment rate to below 5%. What a boost for the economy!

The Obama administration plans to announce Tuesday that it will send as many as 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to improve border security, an Arizona congresswoman said.

I'll believe it when I see it. Sounds like hearsay to me right now, especially when I read this.......

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's spokesman said the governor hadn't been told of the move prior to her office being contacted by The Associated Press and had no immediate comment.

If he really is going to send in the guard he needs to send more than 1,200 troops. He should just bring our troops home and let them protect our borders.
