US Consulate warns of "fake" checkpoints in Mexico

www.victoriaadvocate.com

The U.S. Consulate in Nogales, Mexico, issued a warning because travelers have been stopped by phony Mexican police roadblocks.

The Consulate said it was told by those moving through the checkpoints between Sonoyta and Puerto Penasco that drivers were asked to show identification before they were allowed to pass.

Arizona Sheriff Wants Apology From Mexico for Its Threatening Tourism Ad

I saw a co-host on the tv news talk about this and I thought this actually deserves its own thread.

From what I heard in the news on the tv, there's people down in Mexico looking for people from Arizona. Fake police and fake roadblocks. I doubt anything good will happen to someone who is found out to be from Arizona.

There was a tourism ad released not too long ago that Sheriff Arpaio sees as threatening to AZ citizens, and this may be related to that.

Edit - The articles linked are pretty short and dont really go in depth, since this is still a new development.

This kind of thing is nothing new. Scams like this happen all the time in Mexico. It is also not unheard of for the Mexican police to be in on the scams.

I ran into an adventurous American couple in Mexico that enjoyed driving through Mexico's back country. They told me while they were driving, the saw a sign that said a toll booth was up ahead. Shortly after they saw the sign, a gang of men armed with bats and knives approached their car. The American couple ended up paying each member of the gang $20. The American couple was not quite sure whether the gang member were the official toll collectors or not.

What worries me this time is that the "fake" cops are asking for id. If they find out that the person is from AZ, I can only guess what they are going to do to them, considering all of the violence going on down there at the moment. If I was from AZ and got stopped, I would be scared as heck to show my id to them.

As an Arizona resident I am at a loss to explain why anyone would want to go to Mexico in the first place - there's a reason they are all running here you know and it isn't just $

One of my co-workers was pulled over by the Mexican police for a non-existent traffic violation while on vacation and he didn't have enough money for the bribe (it's $100 by the way). He was passed from cop to cop for 3 hours before being released without any type of ticket or violation. Need less to say he has vowed never to return.

You have no idea what we have to deal with down here.

The touristy areas of Mexico are very safe. Crime and crooked cops are not tolerated because these areas have a strong financial interest in keeping tourists safe. I would not cancel my vacation to Cabo, Cancun, or Acapulco just yet.

Mexico can be dangerous when you get off the beaten path. These areas can be dangerous and lawless. The cops in these areas can be more dangerous than the crooks. This is especially true since the recent drug war killings.

It is a little off topic but... people, who work for the air lines have been warned not to bring electronics to mexico...
because customs well confiscate their belongings, Then sell them.

I wouldn't consider those toursity spots 100% safe. It would be in the cartel's best interest to choke of all the revenue that supplies the government and its anti drug efforts.

Drug Wars Intrude on Mexico's Coastal Resorts

In Cancún, says Ana Maria Salazar, a national security specialist in Mexico City, tourism has not been widely affected by drug violence because most perceive it to take place outside tourist zones, even as violence between rivals and law enforcement has intensified. But where firefights have emerged, such as in Acapulco, tourism is more vulnerable. "There have been open shootouts in much more public areas. Acapulco is different in that sense."

In Acapulco, last weekend's shootout was triggered when soldiers surrounded a safe house and gunmen inside began to throw grenades. Hours later, 16 alleged members of the Beltran Leyva gang, as well as two soldiers, were dead.

hahahaha HA!

go mexico!

you arizonians and americans deserve all you get from mexcians imo. At this present time, and for the last month or so the amount of american anti mexican rasicim has been completly sickening ! ... If i was a mexican id be looking for ways to get back at americans too.

its also ironic, americans dont have an issue with any other americans being in mexico, but they dont want any mexicans in their country ... their country which was made up of illegal immigrants who stole land from the indigenous people or the americas in the first place!

If anything mexicans probably have more rights to live in the americas than most of the USA do!

I take it your in the UK or something, You don't have to deal with the drugs and crime coming up. so it is easy for you to point fingers. and as far as Americans in Mexico... sure in the safe zones... but outside of that you run the risk of getting killed.

So how is your system holding up under the pressure of all of the illegals you have you in your country? Oh wait you don't have a country any more, its the Euro Zone.

It must be heart wrenching to be so pissed of at your own country that you have now turned to hating on others. At least Americans know how to fight for their country and not reach for the jar of vaseline for a good shagging from the illegals.

So you consider Drugs to be Utopia, how Fried is your mind? Are you on drugs while you are typing this?

i was actualy being sarcastic you dolt - on the utopia thing, my point every country has the same problems, some have them worse ect but all the same...

in the uk, we got over the immigration thing years ago, most people who have came to the uk have done to work, they work hard and pay tax, the ones who are illegal get dealt with..

see, as an american, you will hear much more bad immigration press form the uk then good, as in the uk we have some very right wing racist groups and sensasionalist press who make a living striking fear and hatred into peoples hearts....much like the current anti mexican thing in america!

its ironic , i woudl have thought with obama in charge america woudl be a much more racialy tollerant country, but now it seems to be 10 times more racist ,and whats worse usa have singled out one group where as before it was just anyone who was not white that got it in usa!

and btw, that flippant eurozone remark... was that meant to be some sort of insult?? unlike americans we dont think the sun shines out our own countries ass, and we got over the fact we got sold out to europe along time ago .... thats soooo 2001 dude.!

oh ye, and sorry to pop your bubble, and expose your typical american stupidity, but most of the immigrants to uk are euro citizens and therefore NOT ILLEGAL immigrants!

Ah Mr. Dodo, think out your thoughts clearly before making a key stroke.

Immigration has 'deeply unsettled' Britain

Polls have consistently shown around 40 per cent of voters rating immigration as their top concern.

Nations Condemn Britains InHuamne Immigration Policy

A senior French politician has condemned Britain's "inhumane and illegal" immigration policies, blaming them for causing "utter misery" across the Channel.

The Euro: why Britain is still better off out

But as far as the fake checkpoints go, just avoiding Mexico period is what need to be done. Those who are not Amercians will not have our level realization as this problem does not pretain to them. Once Mexico is cut of American Tourist Dollars, may the rest of the world can fill that gap....oh wait, those socialists don't have money any more for their vacation.

Rise in illegal immigrants entering Britain

The number of illegal immigrants discovered hiding in lorries after entering Britain has more than doubled in two years. - 07 Feb 2009

Anymore stats you want to make us stupid Americans aware of?

This is why our Illegal Immigration situation is best understood by individuals who are involved. Not by individuals who do not even know what is going on even in their own country.

Immigration has 'deeply unsettled' Britain

- LIE - i have lived in england for the last 5 years till a month ago, and now back in scotland - noone gives a toss about immigarion except those angry people who believe everything the sun, daily star or daily record tell them, these people usualy prefer to listen to the BNP or EDL as well.

Nations Condemn Britains InHuamne Immigration Policy

- Stupid - the french should stop being so lazy and stop people getting through, or even into their country ... pot call kettle black .. at least we have an immigration policy!!!

The Euro: why Britain is still better off out
- Duhh!

Rise in illegal immigrants entering Britain

This is very exceptional quote I must say. I don't whether to laugh or laugh harder.

I just think you are out of touch with your own country and do not have insight into what our country's problems are. That is all

Much Love,

As another poster pointed out, the tourist areas are no longer safe anymore. Once upon a time, it was realized that by keeping those areas safe, the country could continue to build revenue on tourism. As long as those areas stayed safe, people would keep coming to visit and spend money. That is no longer the case. The Government in Mexico is no longer able to contain the violence and it has spread into these "safe" areas. Besides the drug issues, you have plenty random acts of violence as well, blackmail and bribery and everyone looking for a way to get paid on the misfortunes of others.

Check out this story from 2010 Spring Break, so much for nice, beautiful, safe Cancun huh?
