Oil Absorber is Ready to Eat Up BP Oil Spill

Here is a press release that has quite simply has me very suspicious...

What is a Government relations firm doing in promoting a companies oil absorbing product, why wouldn't the company just head on down to the gulf area to demonstrate their product's effectiveness..

Instead, a demonstration will be held in Newport News, Virginia for BP Oil, the federal Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, media organizations and others.

I admit that I know nothing of this company, or the relations firm that is going to do the presentation, which is why this one doesn't fit right with me.

Does this one pass the smell test?

Found an article on this demonstration. In this one, it mentions that this has been used by European Coast Guard, if so, and if so good at absorbing oil, why wouldn't our friends overseas have chimed in with information on the effectiveness of this product?

Looks as if the Kevin Costner oil cleanup machine is drawing similar products from the wood works.
Another product, which is said to be eco-friendly, is set to be introduced on Monday morning in Newport News, Va., according to a source. The product apparently has been used in Europe by by the Coast Guard in several countries. The product supposedly absorbs the oil from the water, making the water not only clean but drinkable.
Apparently, the Newport News company, Hales Global, has invited BP officials, the EPA, the Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy and the media.
Hales Global could not be reached overnight for an immediate comment at either its Newport News or Washington, D.C. offices.
More information should be available later Sunday, but the Newport News location apparently was picked because Hales Global has offices there as well as in Washington, D.C. and because of the Hampton Roads area's close proximity to shipping, to major U.S. Coast Guard operations and to more than a dozen military complexes.

In this particular case, it appears to be geared to securing money from the government. IMO.

If this is a proven commodity, and used overseas, you would think there is already a track record of how effective this product is..

and..

if it is this effective, why has it not already been deployed to help in the clean up?

It will be interesting to see what you come up with in regards to the company behind this product.

I searched their site, and could not find any mention of this oil absorbing product.. it's mainly about clean energy , maybe it is just a way to absorb taxpayer money via government grants, which happens to be a key part of it's structure :

I've found one 100% green natural European product used to soak up oil spills with.

I'm going to see if I can find some more newly invented European products on the net later today.

But we are probably looking for some kind of industrial booms, which are filled with synthetic microfibers sponges or some other material that can mop up 20 to 50 times their weight in oil?

And it would probably be a product which they already have produced large quantities of already - smart sponges, ready to use!

But maybe it could also be some kind of brand new 100% natural wood bark powder product as well perhaps?

I mean, a brand new spill wood product must be very easy and fast to produce locally in the US near the oil spill - with some kind of special patented formula they can maybe produce large quantities of the product very near the oil spil without transporting half way around the world?

Just brainstorming out loud a little!

Gulf oil spill: Could Norway have a solution?

While the Gulf of Mexico oil spill might seem like a US problem, the slick has the potential to devastate the world's ecology along with fish stocks and the economy connected to it. As such, everyone is trying to come up with ways to clear up the spillage, but a Norwegian company could have a naturally occurring tool that could be used to clean up the oil.

The company, Kallak Torvstrøfabrikk, has developed a super absorbent organic peat moss that can 'soak up' oil floating on water. Once the oil is absorbed, the peat can then be scooped out of the ocean along with the toxic oil.

As the peat doesn't absorb water, there is no chance of it sinking. While the peat was billed as a useful tool for clearing up oil-spills after minor incidents, the scale of the Gulf oil spill means that every possibility is being looked at.

Traditionally the three-man company has traditionally sold treated peat moss as a component of soil for flowering plants and as growth medium, but the ability of the peat as an absorbent meant that the company looked at its potential in other areas.

Initial tests with SINTEF's Marine Environmental Technology department have yielded positive results along with a successful field test in 2009 when the tanker "Full City" ran aground off Langesund on the south-east coast of Norway, causing severe oil contamination along much of the coast. This incident gave Kallak Torvstrøfabrikk the chance to demonstrate the efficacy of its new product on land.

According to Science Daily, Svein Ramstad of SINTEF's Marine Environment department said that the peat moss "was deployed on a geological conservation area near Langesund and at Stavern. The area was heavily contaminated, and particular care needed to be taken. Gravel and stones were mixed with the peat moss and were laid back in their original position, to good effect."

Spongebob may want to look into a nanotech upgrade that could permit him to walk on water. Chinese scientists have created carbon nanotube sponges that don't absorb water, leaving them plenty of room for absorbing oil or other icky organic goo.

The new sponges rely upon interconnected carbon nanotubes that naturally repel water, and can absorb 180 times their weight in organic matter. Current sponges used for oil spill cleanups and industrial applications can only absorb up to 20 times their own weight.

A single sponge can absorb an oil slick up with an area up to 800 times that of the sponge.

But these product are too new, and I doubt that they are in production already? I think that we have to focus on new stuff produced 2008-2009 - because the OP said it was already in use overseas, right?

And there must be large quantities of it somewhere - ready to use - or something which could be easily & quickly produced in the US by using a patented method under licence.

One product which is often used in Europe is the American: MYCELX - it's like a gigantic paper towel which can absorb up to 50 times their weigh tof oil.

The demonstration is today so I would guess that we should have more information on the name of the material that they are pimping. Hopefully a video clip of the demo as well.

But instead Reich demonstrated Oil Absorber, a German-made product, that he says could be instrumental in cleaning up the Gulf oil spill.

Not very impressive for me, would there be an issue with the widespread use of an aluminum-essen-magnesium-silicate? I don't know, but if this product works and works well say in the marsh area to help with what's made landfall, and... Hales Global touts that the company,

has 500,000 cubic tons of the product available for shipment immediately to Louisiana

The only thing they must be waiting for is money...

in this case.. taxpayer dollars I guess.
