Here is a press release that has quite simply has me very suspicious...

What is a Government relations firm doing in promoting a companies oil absorbing product, why wouldn't the company just head on down to the gulf area to demonstrate their product's effectiveness..

Instead, a demonstration will be held in Newport News, Virginia for BP Oil, the federal Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy, media organizations and others.

Hales Global LLC (, a Washington, D.C. and Virginia government relations firm, announced today the existence of a 100% bio-degradable tool -- already being used overseas -- that can help clean up the calamitous BP oil spill off the Southern coast of the United States.

Newport News, Va. (PRWEB) May 24, 2010 -- Hales Global LLC (, a Washington, D.C. and Virginia government relations firm, announced today the existence of a 100% bio-degradable tool -- already being used overseas -- that can help clean up the calamitous BP oil spill off the Southern coast of the United States.

The product, known as the Oil Absorber, sucks the oil off the water, allowing the oil to then be scooped up in a mass form. The product can be used again once the oil is burned from the used product.

I admit that I know nothing of this company, or the relations firm that is going to do the presentation, which is why this one doesn't fit right with me.

Does this one pass the smell test?

Found an article on this demonstration. In this one, it mentions that this has been used by European Coast Guard, if so, and if so good at absorbing oil, why wouldn't our friends overseas have chimed in with information on the effectiveness of this product?

Looks as if the Kevin Costner oil cleanup machine is drawing similar products from the wood works.
Another product, which is said to be eco-friendly, is set to be introduced on Monday morning in Newport News, Va., according to a source. The product apparently has been used in Europe by by the Coast Guard in several countries. The product supposedly absorbs the oil from the water, making the water not only clean but drinkable.
Apparently, the Newport News company, Hales Global, has invited BP officials, the EPA, the Coast Guard, the U.S. Navy and the media.
Hales Global could not be reached overnight for an immediate comment at either its Newport News or Washington, D.C. offices.
More information should be available later Sunday, but the Newport News location apparently was picked because Hales Global has offices there as well as in Washington, D.C. and because of the Hampton Roads area's close proximity to shipping, to major U.S. Coast Guard operations and to more than a dozen military complexes.

Cool, This will be great for the water shortage in Australia.

Just create an oil geyser in the Gulf, (of Carpentaria,) use this product on it, and we will have an oceanful of fresh drinkable water.

In this particular case, it appears to be geared to securing money from the government. IMO.

If this is a proven commodity, and used overseas, you would think there is already a track record of how effective this product is..

if it is this effective, why has it not already been deployed to help in the clean up?

It will be interesting to see what you come up with in regards to the company behind this product.

Does Obama have a vested interest in the Hales Global company.
Apparently they met last year.

Here's the link to World Energy USA

The World Energy Center is a large-scale, master planned, fully integrated renewable energy development and industrial center. The Center collaborates with multiple companies on the most technologically advanced renewable energy projects. Its mission as a clean energy innovation and commercialization “Hub” is to reduce the cost of clean energy and accelerate its worldwide deployment. Strategically located in Southern California, the Center will become the nerve center for the nation’s leading clean energy corridor.

World Energy USA, Inc. is the master developer of the World Energy Center and its many projects. The Center is a consortium of companies, cities and partners working together in collaboration. The group has had unparalleled success in the development of power projects in California over the past 20 years. The Center’s comprehensive approach to clean energy ranges from incubating new technologies, to distribution, to the development and construction of large power projects. Its innovative quasi Public-Private partnership brings together the best of the U.S. government’s resources with a fast moving entrepreneurial core. The World Energy Center and its collaborative group of partners expect to build out more than 5,000 Megawatts of solar, geothermal, wind, natural gas and other clean energy projects at a cost of approximately $15 Billion over the next 15 years.

The overall economic impact and benefits of the World Energy Center are many times that of stand-alone power projects. The World Energy Center significantly increases profit margins through lower costs and higher PPA rates. It generates additional revenues, fees and participating interests from activities both within the Center and from outside projects. Partners receive participating interests in the Center’s Technology, IPO, REIT and other activities. The development of its satellite centers and hubs will eventually incorporate hundreds of entrepreneurial companies developing hundreds of new projects and technologies.

The World Energy Center is modeled after the scientific management characteristics of the Manhattan Project and NASA space program. The John F. Kennedy Space Center set the stage for America's space exploration. Similar to how Silicon Valley spawned the computer and internet industries, the World Energy Center will become the catalyst for America’s renewable energy revolution. The Center will position the United States as a leader in low cost renewable energy, create hundreds of thousands of green jobs and educate the next generation of young Americans through its association with universities and technology training centers.

The World Energy Center is changing the way the world produces, uses and stores energy. The development of renewable energy, and in particular solar, has the long-term potential to deliver low-cost energy, to everyone, everywhere.

By working together, we can truly accomplish something extraordinary.

I searched their site, and could not find any mention of this oil absorbing product.. it's mainly about clean energy , maybe it is just a way to absorb taxpayer money via government grants, which happens to be a key part of it's structure :

The Center’s innovative structure combines the best of the U.S. government’s resources along with an innovative and fast moving entrepreneurial core

Iraq Guarantees 50 years of Profit Package

Marriott, Hilton and Mercedes Benz are a few of the many protected investors in the 50 year program. In an effort to help more investors become knowledgeable of this little known government backed program that protects investors Larry Hales International offers investors inside help.

European and Asian investors were beating American rival into Iraq now that security has improved the investment climate. It's starting to turn ..and the US investors are getting in fast. Within the past six months private investors are flocking to invest in Iraq.

Insiders continue to reap fortunes in Iraq. Larry Hales International is that credible insider who know how the game is played.

The U.S. government working with the new Iraqi government has created a parallel investment arm that is working. For example a few of the benefits offered to investors include.

*Guaranteed in writing a minimum of 20% yearly profit for 50 years

*Guaranteed government insurance policy against any investment losses for 50 years

*Guaranteed in writing by the govt - exempt from taxes and fees for the first (15) years

In the past, prospecting and trying to find the right point of contact and program to invest in was like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Not any longer. Larry Hales International has produced a resource guide call the Iraqi e-Guide that offers all of the inside information online via a download.

Guaranteed profits for 50 years with a minimum of a 20% return is timely based upon what has happen on Wall Street the past week.

The goal of Larry Hales International is to provide investors with "inside" and hard to find information without going through a lot of governmental red tape.

The Iraq governmental investors backed program is safe and investors are guaranteed to make a profit for 50 years. Right now, the Iraq government has more than $80 billion dollars in the bank from oil sales and the account is growing daily.

This is the strongest protected investment program in the market at this time.

Everyone interested in these things should read Naomi Klein's book:

The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism

In this book from 2007 she is describing exactly just what these Corporations are doing.

These Corporation need catastrophes and catastrophe-capitalism to make money!

And if I would put on my tinfoil hat I could say that MAYBE? they also need to create wars, disasters & catastrophes to make money?

The Shock Doctrine

In THE SHOCK DOCTRINE, Naomi Klein explodes the myth that the global free market triumphed democratically. Exposing the thinking, the money trail and the puppet strings behind the world-changing crises and wars of the last four decades, The Shock Doctrine is the gripping story of how America’s “free market” policies have come to dominate the world-- through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.

At the most chaotic juncture in Iraq’s civil war, a new law is unveiled that would allow Shell and BP to claim the country’s vast oil reserves…. Immediately following September 11, the Bush Administration quietly out-sources the running of the “War on Terror” to Halliburton and Blackwater…. After a tsunami wipes out the coasts of Southeast Asia, the pristine beaches are auctioned off to tourist resorts.... New Orleans’s residents, scattered from Hurricane Katrina, discover that their public housing, hospitals and schools will never be reopened….

These events are examples of “the shock doctrine”: using the public’s disorientation following massive collective shocks – wars, terrorist attacks, or natural disasters -- to achieve control by imposing economic shock therapy. Sometimes, when the first two shocks don’t succeed in wiping out resistance, a third shock is employed: the electrode in the prison cell or the Taser gun on the streets.

I don't care if people are calling her a liberal twat - what she is saying about this is unfortunately very true.

Must see videos to understand how all of this works!

A funny thing about this, is what most of these Disaster Capitalism Corporations (who are making money of the shock-doctrine) have in common, is that they're are located in Dubai - why?

Halliburton recently moved there.

Hales Global also have office there.

And the list is endless!

Why is Dubai a major base of operations?

It will be interesting to see what you come up with in regards to the company behind this product.

I've found one 100% green natural European product used to soak up oil spills with.

I'm going to see if I can find some more newly invented European products on the net later today.

But we are probably looking for some kind of industrial booms, which are filled with synthetic microfibers sponges or some other material that can mop up 20 to 50 times their weight in oil?

And it would probably be a product which they already have produced large quantities of already - smart sponges, ready to use!

But maybe it could also be some kind of brand new 100% natural wood bark powder product as well perhaps?

I mean, a brand new spill wood product must be very easy and fast to produce locally in the US near the oil spill - with some kind of special patented formula they can maybe produce large quantities of the product very near the oil spil without transporting half way around the world?

Just brainstorming out loud a little!

Gulf oil spill: Could Norway have a solution?

While the Gulf of Mexico oil spill might seem like a US problem, the slick has the potential to devastate the world's ecology along with fish stocks and the economy connected to it. As such, everyone is trying to come up with ways to clear up the spillage, but a Norwegian company could have a naturally occurring tool that could be used to clean up the oil.

The company, Kallak Torvstrøfabrikk, has developed a super absorbent organic peat moss that can 'soak up' oil floating on water. Once the oil is absorbed, the peat can then be scooped out of the ocean along with the toxic oil.

As the peat doesn't absorb water, there is no chance of it sinking. While the peat was billed as a useful tool for clearing up oil-spills after minor incidents, the scale of the Gulf oil spill means that every possibility is being looked at.

Traditionally the three-man company has traditionally sold treated peat moss as a component of soil for flowering plants and as growth medium, but the ability of the peat as an absorbent meant that the company looked at its potential in other areas.

Initial tests with SINTEF's Marine Environmental Technology department have yielded positive results along with a successful field test in 2009 when the tanker "Full City" ran aground off Langesund on the south-east coast of Norway, causing severe oil contamination along much of the coast. This incident gave Kallak Torvstrøfabrikk the chance to demonstrate the efficacy of its new product on land.

According to Science Daily, Svein Ramstad of SINTEF's Marine Environment department said that the peat moss "was deployed on a geological conservation area near Langesund and at Stavern. The area was heavily contaminated, and particular care needed to be taken. Gravel and stones were mixed with the peat moss and were laid back in their original position, to good effect."

This looks like an interesting product, but I very much doubt that this is produced already and will be used in the US?

.Carbon Nanotube Sponge Could Suck Up Oil Spills

A new carbon sponge can soak up 180 times its own weight in organic matter

Spongebob may want to look into a nanotech upgrade that could permit him to walk on water. Chinese scientists have created carbon nanotube sponges that don't absorb water, leaving them plenty of room for absorbing oil or other icky organic goo.

The new sponges rely upon interconnected carbon nanotubes that naturally repel water, and can absorb 180 times their weight in organic matter. Current sponges used for oil spill cleanups and industrial applications can only absorb up to 20 times their own weight.

A single sponge can absorb an oil slick up with an area up to 800 times that of the sponge.

Carbon Nanotube Sponge

Here's another high tech product which seems to be very efficient of soaking up oil

NASA-Inspired Aerogel Could Sponge Up Oil Spills

It was originally designed to capture comet dust, but it could be used to clean up the environment.

But these product are too new, and I doubt that they are in production already? I think that we have to focus on new stuff produced 2008-2009 - because the OP said it was already in use overseas, right?

And there must be large quantities of it somewhere - ready to use - or something which could be easily & quickly produced in the US by using a patented method under licence.

One product which is often used in Europe is the American: MYCELX - it's like a gigantic paper towel which can absorb up to 50 times their weigh tof oil.

This is another one: Oil Sponge is a cotton fibre and nut pith product used to absorb gasoline, diesel and oil spills and biorediate them in place:

I will search for some more products later.

If we are lucky, we can maybe connect the name of the product which they are using overseas with the name of the company in the OP?

They mentioned that this product was in the form of pellets in the OP source article..

The demonstration is today so I would guess that we should have more information on the name of the material that they are pimping. Hopefully a video clip of the demo as well.

Here's an article on the demonstration:

Newport News company touts new method to clean up BP Gulf oil spill

Michael Reich stood in front of the conference room, spatula in hand, looking like the host of a cooking show.

But instead Reich demonstrated Oil Absorber, a German-made product, that he says could be instrumental in cleaning up the Gulf oil spill.

Oil Absorber is an aluminum-essen-magnesium-silicate based product, he said. It's formed into pellets that feel like soft wood shavings. Ten gallons of the product can absorb 80 gallons of oil, he said.

More pics of this demonstration can be found here:

Not very impressive for me, would there be an issue with the widespread use of an aluminum-essen-magnesium-silicate? I don't know, but if this product works and works well say in the marsh area to help with what's made landfall, and... Hales Global touts that the company,

has 500,000 cubic tons of the product available for shipment immediately to Louisiana

The only thing they must be waiting for is money...

in this case.. taxpayer dollars I guess.
