Wobbly Bridge in Russia

news.bbc.co.uk

A 7km (four miles) long bridge over the Volga river in Volgograd, Russia, has been shut after the structure started to wobble.

Strong currents in the river caused by the flow of water from melting snow upstream apparently loosened one of the bridge's vertical supports.

Officials are deciding whether to reopen the bridge.

Havent seen something like this since the Tacoma Bridge collapse. Looks like the wind is creating the same harmonic resonance that took down the Tacoma Bridge. Its kinda creepy seeing concrete and steel twist and bend like that!

What do you folks think? Will it go down like the Tacoma, or will they fix it?

More footage on the link to Englishrussia!

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Seeing that video, it's just like seeing Galloping Gertie. I suspect that this bridge is doomed, unless they somehow manage to secure it. My guess is that it won't be easy to save it, if it's possible at all.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

I seriously doubt they'll make any attempt to fix it. Infrastructure all over the US is crumbling, and I would guess that it's even worse in Russia. TPTB are getting their affairs squared away for whatever is coming in 2012, so they don't care whether the little people (The other 99% of us...) are inconvenienced.

Who in their right mind would ever go on that bridge again without a major renovation of it???????

Unless they could think of a new daredevil drag race across that bridge, I dont think they'd want to open that thing until its secured.

I love watching that old footage of Galloping Gerdie though! Heh, that was such a tourist attraction. Maybe Russia can follow suit and turn this into a tourist attraction.

It still amazes me how concrete and steel and act like Jello with nothing more than wind blowing across it.

Was the bridge ever reinforced using recycled WTC steel?

(Joking...)
