Obama has veto power, to reject anything that Congress passes. Now, why don't you look it up, and find out how many REAL vetoes he issued. (Don't count the veto of the stopgap spending bill that never had to take effect, and thus was meaningless).

At first, I thought that they were/ are stalling to get the "relief wells" dug so that they could get as much of the oil/ gas out of this field as possible- a top kill would eliminate that possibility.
But I've been thinking about it and I have to wonder if their "big picture" thinking might be that if the Gulf (& indeed, the Atlantic as well) were FUBAR, there would be no more limitations on where they could drill or how they went about it. The risks & damage they might do would be irrelevant.

These are people in the oil industry & at least 1 or 2 shills for the industry having this dialogue.

Aside from that, we all need to pray, send out good intentions or whatever because if we have a hurricane on a magnitude of Katrina or Ike & it hits in that general area, the US stands to lose a significant amount of real estate. Ike destroyed the wetlands on the upper Texas coast from Sabine Pass to Galveston. Apparently, the drought last year prevented any recovery. Now, with the Louisiana wetlands (which were already damaged pre Katrina) going, going, gone, a significant buffer is lost. The storm surge will do a lot more damage.

EVERYONE associated with this disaster (I would exclude the workers on the DWH below management) from people in the oil industry to the government needs to have their assets seized & face criminal charges. This was far more than predictable. It has been a regular occurrence for decades. It is CRIMINAL negligence.
What the hell are Congresspeople doing forming "committees" for? All they know anything about is taking bribes.

There have been mentions of selling off BP stock... that is a great idea..

all these storms happened in June: could the possiblility of a gulf storm impact the time frame for recovery, seeing as the recovery process is moving so slowly....? or in fact make it worse?

BP and many other offshore drillers should have their own fleet ready to control these kinds of disasters.

To rely on the government for cleanup makes the response of the disaster and who they want to blame OBVIOUS.

Why they drill when they didn't have the proper safety measures in place? I don't accept a "O.K." to drill as an "O.K. to drill unsafely."

The governement needs to clean up BP's business partices... the United States should be up their ass 24/7, to hell with media coeverage. BP has done damage... they should have to pay up for this, either out of their wallets or with some ass whippin... (if not both) the gulf is not thiers to destroy....

I've been hearing reports of researchers and local news agencies getting turned back by the Coast Guard.

Obama isn't calling the shots: this whole government is OWNED by corporations and takes their orders.

This isn't Katrina, or 911, this is something worse. However, the people trying to make Obama the center of this want to obscure the issue. The problem is corporations like BP -- not Socialism or illegal immigrants.

It seems very bad, and i don't think much can be done about the mess it has already created. No point in moaning about that now, like other people have said i don't think any one has ever faced such a leak before...so while it's easy to say it should have been fixed already the problem is much more complicated than that, but the government have definitely been slow to act and take the threat serious. I think they will sort the problem out before it get's to the level of severity that many ATS members seem to think it will though...then again i would have thought it would have been fixed already.

Many in this thread have already taken up such a stance to blame Obama and it comes it political drama, so my intention was not to single you out. The OP posted a thread and opened it for debate with its political stance.

These videos are extremely powerful. Enough so that I finally decided to contact several of my representatives to make my voice heard ...

Mr. President,

I've been following the BP oil spill rather closely. Unlike most I was one of the few trying to downplay the hysteria because I assumed we'd manage to come up with a solution to divert the oil away from our shorelines and cap the well.

So as to not simply base my viewpoint in opinion, I spent a bit of time educating myself on booming. After looking at the various photos & videos I'm now entirely convinced the people running this operation have no idea what they're doing.

I can't urge you enough to watch to the following video presentation, particularly the segment at 3:51, www.youtube.com... .

All the booms in the Gulf have been configured in straight lines parallel to the coast. It makes no sense. This is either a sign of complete ineptitude on the part of BP or they're engaging in *really* bad theater.

I intend on helping the video above go viral and if it comes out BP's been intentionally misleading the public to minimize our ire, I assure you I'll be the first person advocating:

1. For every property owner who's gotten even a single drop of oil washed on their land to immediately contact an attorney to start the process for filing a class action lawsuit.
   
2. Move to close all British Petroleum operations in county's where damage from the spill has occurred to make it ready for sale when the suit from step-1 is decided.
   
3. Encourage every American with a BP credit card to cut it up and mail it back to them in-lieu of payment, with a note saying they will NOT honor the debt.
   
4. That all American's sell all BP shares on Monday and that retirement funds divest all BP shares now.
   
5. That any REAL American left in the US Navy (it seems the US Coast Guard has been lost to us -- www.wwl.com...) that's in the vicinity of a BP oil rig anywhere in the world, is to blockade and take it as "a prize."

This has become your Katrina Mr President.

The fact that oil's starting to reach in to the marshlands and it could have been stopped if not for the Army Corps of Engineers doing nothing other than rolling out the red-tape is disgusting (www.youtube.com...).

This has gone from bad to worse and ultimately the buck stops with you.

Inasmuch as this thread opens the door to politicize this event I wish to rise above the likes of Professor Ignoramus and express why I believe the perception of nonchalance on part of current administration is founded.

Granted the US Government is ill equipped to tackle this unthinkable yet inevitable consequence of the reckless disregard of our environment by BP. They simply do not have the resources, expertise, equipment or manpower on a 24/7 stand-by notice in anticipation of something like this.

However, I can't help but imagine that if it was learned that a hostile, rogue nation's submarine was a mere mile below our Gulf that we would have US submarines in the area conducting surveillance and providing intelligence post haste. It would at least serve to instill some confidence in the ability to accurately assess the situation and be ready to act quickly to remedy the situation should BP's efforts continue to prove futile.

Also, does anyone know why the "top kill" was pushed back from Sunday (today) to Tuesday?
