I found this article about uses for rubberbands.I
was wondering what uses could rubberbands have
in a survival situation?I also have a lot of balloons
left over from parties I have done over the years.
I thought this could be a fun thread for others to
think of uses for these items in SHTF type situation.

All of my balloons are latex.I think mylar balloons
could have a possible use just because they are mylar.
I bought several mylar bags for storing food items for
long term storage.I don't know if the mylar balloons
could be used for the same purpose.
Any thoughts?

The rubber band has, in fact, been used as a weapon in the wilderness. The rubber band is the dynamic component in the modern StoneBow (as we call them), Other people call these things slingshots, although it's not really a slingshot.

A true slingshot consists of a fabricated sling and a rock, and it's pretty awesome in itself.

But the "Y" shaped yoke of our stonebows is an American variation on the medieval european stonebows.

Tell you what, stonebows and slingshots are some doggone dangerous weapons, I'll tell ye... Good enough fer huntin' small game.

Well, you know how we men are... We start talking about survival and hunting and we're liable to use all manner of off-color language.

We used to make pea shooters out of balloons. wrap the mouth of the balloon around a small cylinder and you have a pea shooter. put a small rock, marble, BB or etc in, pull back on the balloon and release... almost like a sling shot ( or like previous poster said, rock bow).

Here is an example, but they used a latex glove instead...

Hey, and that peashooter can be ramped-up into a formidable weapon as well. With a decent-sized rubber balloon, you could put a slug through a piece of plyboard.

And that, my frane, is watcha call lethal.

You can use rubber bands to pluck your eyebrows and you can make a diaphragm out of the latex baloons (i wouldn't try it with mylar). The diaphragm could help prevent getting HIV should you encounter any violent sex offenders.

You got to think outside the box with these things.

Good quality balloons can be used to store large quantities of water, if handled carefully. In any case, I'd pick a large pack of condoms because these are more versatile and are guaranteed not to leak, not to mention longer shelf life.

I am not sure about storing water in latex balloons.
I have about 1000 balloons in storage and the latex
usually have an odor to them! With all the different
colors, you don't know what dyes were used.

Yeah looking back on my sugestion condoms would probably be a bit better than baloons, maybe some ribbed ones. You never know what someone might discover about themselves.

HUH?!

If SHTF, and I had to rely on improving the situation by the use of rubber-bands and balloons, I would say with all certainty that the best option then would be to use your little rubber-band to HANG yourself. Thats the BEST solution if this thread is in all honesty serious.

That makes sense. If you are using baloons to prevent you from getting HIV from forced sodomy you should probably use the rubber bands to hang yourself.

2.Wrapped around your thumb for a substitute thimble.
3.Used as a compass to draw circles.
4.Can keep wax from dripping out of a candle.
5.Used as a band aid.
6.Secure glasses and goggles to your face.
7.Melted down to make a quick glue.
8.Quick splint for an injured finger.
