Because its hard for people to 'remove' themselves from situations that are quite real and affecting their daily and long term lives.

There's many ways to get out of it. You can leave, you can simply not partake in the fighting. You can do a lot of things. Problems are only problems to the extent that you see them as such. If you choose to view things in a different way, you will not see it as a problem. If you are going to act out of a fearful, defensive position you can only move from that position. Generally that's a bad place to be.
