Warning shots fired in Korean navy border skirmish

news.bbc.co.uk

South Korea's navy has fired warning shots at a patrol boat from the North, the most serious skirmish since a Southern ship was sunk on 26 March.

Two patrol boats crossed on two separate occasions and warning shots were fired," an official said

The border skirmish took place close to where the Cheonan, a Southern warship, sank in March, apparently struck by a torpedo. That incident left 46 sailors dead

Interesting. I guess it was a matter of time before something happened between these two.

Tensions must be very high after the Torpedoing of the South Korean ship a few weeks ago.

Skirmishes are nothing new between North and South Korea, but one has got to wonder, when and not if, another war will break out...

The North Korean military is not stupid. Crazy maybe, but not stupid. They are testing SK and so far are making SK look very weak and timid. For all of you who say NK is no threat blah blah blah..........you are idiots. The entire reason SK is acting timid and weak is because they know a war with NK would be horrific.......not matter if SK won or not.

I mean my god I can only hope the US response to some country sinking one of our navy ships would be a lot more fierce than that of SK's.

Well the Korean Civil War has never officially ended. So this could be Kim Jong Il's last way to save North Korea before his death. Many people don't know that Kim Jong Il choosing one of his son's as his successor will bring major consequences. hopefully this won't blow up any bigger then it now is.

Defense ministry to issue warning against N. Korea

SEOUL, May 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korean military authorities have concluded that the March 26 sinking of a Navy warship in the Yellow Sea was caused by a North Korean torpedo attack and are planning to issue a statement of stern warning against the communist North this week at the earliest, officials said Sunday.

"A joint team of civilian and military investigators has secured evidence indicating the involvement of a North Korean torpedo in the sinking of the Cheonan patrol ship," said a government official, asking to remain anonymous.

Hi, thanks for the links!

Looks like it going to be very interesting over the next few weeks as to what the South actually do over the torpedo incident.

Like many other threads have said, "what can they do?"

It's a sticky situation with any full scale confrontation going to mean heavy heavy casualties on both sides.

I wonder how far the South will be pushed before they respond firmly?

Yeah, a stern warning should put an end to all this .SK should learn never to show weakness to your enemy.
Kim has seen plenty of war movies, he Knows the drill

South Korea you are VERY silly to aggravate the North - they are Rabid psychopaths, AND they have rockets and Nukes. The "torpedo" is NOT verified, that area is littered with sea-mines from long ago, AND the border there is Contested /claimed by the North. There was NO NEED WHATSOEVER for the South to be "patrolling in Free waters" in the first place, and now youre firing popguns at an unbeatable Mad dog ! who is MORE mad ? the north have a MILLION infantry lined up READY to OVERRUN the south, in maybe 2 weeks. the combined forces of America + south COULD NOT STOP them. Rather than loose, the North would unleash all theyve got, and the South would be DESTROYED. the only real hope is in Pressure on north from Russia, China, Japan, all threatening to Nuke the north Preemptively - and only America might really do that, apart from Obama recently saying he wouldnt ! idiot. take it SOFTLY, be nice to the mad dogs as much as possible, but at same time keep the subs on Red Alert to nuke the border INSTANTLY if they start to March. use a line of Low power neutron bombs, just north of the border; and Full power on their Launch sites and PyongYang, flatten the dogs before they can do more.

I disagree the South is and has been showing great restraint not weakness. Yes both sides know a war would be devastating. North Korea have been the aggressors there, The South have been demonstrating Tact, Maturity and Patience!

I agree war would be horrible, but NK couldn't win it. War is won from the air these days, SK and the US air force would dominate.

I don't want to see it, but the south should stay prepared and willing to defend itself.

You make it seem like the south has no chance, which in reality, regardless of numbers; the North has no chance.

what dyou mean by "win" xstealth. did usa "win" vietnam ? did usa "win" iraq ? the greeks had a word PYRRIC "victory" - one offset by Staggering Losses. if South + usa "win", but South is overrun and so Contaminated with Radiation its UNINHABITABLE (like Iraq is at the moment with Depleted Uranium). who really wins in such a battle of EGOS ? if we HAVE to fight, then too bad, but if we can Avoid, its more sensible. Do you (all) realise that uranium and chemicals in iraq (both wars) have sent home 400,000 american troops dying of their own weapons ? and 6000 american Suicides per year since Vietnam (including last year) ? who is "winning" ? only Cheney and his band of Hyper-criminals (plus Mossad), who supply all the equipment and blew up 911 (hoping to start war on Iran). Discretion can be the better part of Valour sometimes. usa "government" doesnt "work" for money, they simply Print it, then PLUNDER the planet of minerals and Labour, while the Poor classes live in squalor - like Detroit. wake up "citizens" ...

You're right, but that's because they have a deal with US, just like Japan. It is part of some kind of an old plan. If there's a war between SK and NK, many boys from US would be sent there. Similarly, if there's a war between Japan and China, you guys would have a major shortage of cars at home

Well said Slayer.

You couldn't ask anything more from South Korea, they have done well, despite the sinking and killing of those aboard the Navy vessel. they have kept cool.

Here's some more news related to the Koreas. this is from a South Korea news site -

Chinese Defense Minister Urges Caution Over Cheonan Sinking

Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie met with South Korean veterans in Beijing on Wednesday and advised caution over the sinking of the South Korean Navy corvette Cheonan

Liang expressed his sympathy over the disaster but added, "Even when the final result [of the investigation] is out, it is necessary to deal with it in a cool-headed and prudent way for the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke Tuesday with Dai Bingguo, the Chinese state councilor for foreign affairs about the Cheonan incident and North Korean issues, State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters Wednesday

Crowley said Clinton had a "lengthy call with Chinese State Councilor Dai. It's about, I think, their second call this month. The call was just over one hour." Clinton and Dai talked about the ongoing investigation into the sinking of the Cheonan, and about its "potential ramifications once the investigation is completed

Sounds like there are a lot of behind the scenes talks going on here to try and remain calm, even after the results are officially announced.

By the sounds of it, both China and the US know is was the North to blame.

Wonder what route they will go down when it all comes to light?
