Buchanan: With Kagan, too many Jews on Supreme Court bench

Given Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan's general lack of a judicial record, conservative opponents of the Obama administration are having some difficulty finding an issue on which to criticize the former Harvard Law dean and current solicitor-general.

Which is not to say they're not trying: There is the issue of Kagan's sexuality, which has become a source of discontent for some right-wing pundits; and there's also the standard fall-back accusation against anyone suspected of not being conservative -- the "socialist" label.

But conservative commentator Pat Buchanan has found a different way to criticize the president's choice of Supreme Court judge: Kagan's Jewishness.

"If Kagan is confirmed, Jews, who represent less than 2 percent of the US population, will have 33 percent of the Supreme Court seats," Buchanan wrote in a column for WorldNetDaily on Friday. "Is this the Democrats' idea of diversity?"

In his column, Buchanan argued the Democrats have been hypocritical in claiming to be the party of ethnic and racial diversity because their Supreme Court picks don't reflect the US's ethnic and religious breakdown.

I used to respect Buchanan and actually agreed with him on some issues but this remark actually shows an antisemitic side that is very ugly. If he wanted to criticize
Kagan, there are plenty of opportunities with out bringing in religion .
If conservatives are trying to become more inclusive and broadening their base; this seem to me to be the wrong tact. I expect him to issue a statement soon to say that his comments were taken out of context.

What ever happened to Babe Buchanan, Pats sister? She used to be a conservative spokesman too. I always marveled at her transformation in the media. She went from being very unattractive to a fine looking gal in less than a year. Of course Pat is a fine specimen of manhood. Must be genetics.

Pat Buchanan is a moron, and should be treated as such. I don't care who is on the supreme court, where they are from or what they do behind closed doors.

So long as they respect the constitution and are proven to not be criminals.

How about, having at least 33% of the Supreme Court having allegiances to foreign nations(Israel in this case)? And I say at least 33%, because it's probably closer to 100% of the Supreme Court is already Zionists.

No, not everyone is a Zionist, but many who run our gov't are(some even have admitted it). I could never prove to you that anybody is a Zionist, because it's something that in their own hearts, you can only go by their associations(such as AIPAC), things they have said and the fruits of their labor.
Now, if only 2% of our population are Jewish(does this include self-styled or actual practicing Jews, or only people of Hebrew ancestry?), what are the odds that 1/3 of the Supreme Court would be Jews if they weren't Zionists(especially when there are already Christian Zionists sitting on the court)?
And, you don't agree she is Zionist and that has no bearing on her appointment to the SCOTUS. then just read the thread on her College thesis. Oh, and what courts has she served as a judge before this?

I don't think it matters that 33% of the SCOTUS are jews, I mean come on, that's not a qualification.

There aren't ANY Jewish cases that could really ruin America that will go before the Supreme Court. If anything I would be weary about her Liberal policies and her interpretation of the law.

Not nominating her because there would be "one too many jews" on the bench is ridiculous.

As for what courts she's served in, it's not extensive, but her resume is impressive.

She began her career as a professor at the University of Chicago Law School, leaving to serve as an Associate White House Counsel and later policy adviser under President Clinton. After a failed nomination to the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, she became a professor at Harvard Law School and was later named its Dean.

Interesting, I have never heard anyone say that there were too many blacks or not enough Latinos or heaven forbid anyone suggest there were too many Christians or too many men!

Funny, Buchanan complains about jews being over represented on the court but fails to mention that all of the rest of the justices on the Supreem Court are Catholics. That gives us 6 Catholics and 3 jews.

Once Stevens leaves, There will be no Protestants on the Supreem Court. There was never any real diversity on the court to begin with.

I'd rather have all atheists on the bench to tell you the truth.

Religion and law have no place being in the same sentence, and I'm rather certain that Atheists, or Agnostics would not allow religiously inclined thoughts to dictate their rulings.

At leat more so than a Christian or a Orthodox Jew.

I'm a Messianic-jew (which is pretty much the same thing as christian) and even i do not want religious people on the Supreme court bench. Honestly i would prefer agnostic-theists or agnostic-atheists. Gnostic-theists and gnostic-atheists will have greater cognitive biases when deliberating on an issue, therefore they are more likely to pass or reject a ruling based on their own personal beliefs. Though the agnostics would have their biases as well they will theoretically be less likely to pass judgement in accordance with their religious or irreligious beliefs since they both entertain the notion that their belief may or may not be true.

Ideally they should ( and legally speaking are supposed to ) rule in accordance the constitution and not in accordance with a philosophy that advocates favoritism for atheism or theism. But... we all know what happens when people are given an inch of power.
