Solo sailor Jessica Watson returns to Australia

After 210 days at sea, Jessica Watson's boat Ella's Pink Lady has crossed through Sydney Heads, marking the official finish line of her epic around-the-world journey.

The big moment had been delayed for more than two hours due to 4m swells and a torn mainsail. She had been due at the heads at 11.30am (AEST) but eventually made it through at about 1.50pm.

Crowds have gathered at vantage points along the harbour, while dozens of boats escorted her yacht for the final journey into the harbour.

Jessica, still just 16 years old, will now make her way to the Sydney Opera House for an official welcome home, with the Prime Minister, family and friends on hand.

I believe 16 year-old Jessica Watson deserves lots of praise for her achievement as being the youngest person to sail solo around the world. Many people felt her parents were making a grave error allowing her to attempt this feat, and many people doubted that she could complete the journey on her own. She has proven herself to all of those that doubted her. Her efforts show that with enough determination and hard work, ordinary people can overcome significant challenges.

She is not only an inspiration to young people across Australia, she is also a fitting role model for teenagers and young women who aspire to make their dreams become a reality. Congratulations Jessica! We wish you all the best in your return to life on land!

This supposed 'news' story will only serve as a smokescreen to conceal the stuff that really matters.

Girl sails around the world and returns home - big deal. Yet, millions will probably be fooled into devoting more time to it than it deserves.

Media generated entertainment to appease the masses. Big F'n deal, really.

(No offense to you, DarkGhost. I'm shooting the message, not the messenger.)

I guess the only news that people like are ones involving suffering and controversy. Next time I'll try to include a story that involves those themes.
