Republicans search schoolroom, remove pro-labor teaching materials

rawstory.com

Teachers at a middle school in Portland, Maine, are upset with attendees of a Republican convention who rifled through teachers' materials in a classroom they were using and reportedly stole materials from the room, replacing it with GOP slogans.

Officials from the Maine Republican Party quickly apologized this week after local news sources reported on an incident at Portland's King Middle School. Eighth-grade social studies teacher Paul Clifford returned to his classroom following a meeting

When I first was reading this the only thing I was thinking was how stupid it was sounding. I was thinking that it must have been done by some one just trying to make the party look bad. However, then reading on no I did not see where any one was denying it either. So with that I don't really know what to think of it. Again it just sounded like something really stupid to do.

If this had been done by kids using the room for a club meeting, it would be considered vandalism.
This does not speak well for the Republican party.
They applogized...well, well, how good of them.
These hoodlums should be in jail.

I would suggest both sides are insane, like most of us on this planet.

For removing a poster and leaving behind a sticky note?

Yep sounds like those savages need to be kept off the streets to me.

I concur. This is a pretty ridiculous story and the actions of these people are deplorable. People just can't stand it when someone has access to ALL KINDS of knowledge, not just the knowledge that they find acceptable and buy into wholeheartedly. Some people just don't like letting others make up their own mind.

Some get bent out of shape when they learn something is being taught in school that they don't agree with. Who cares? As long as BOTH SIDES are being taught, then let people make up their own dang mind about what is best for them. No one is going to buy into something they don't agree with in the first place just because someone teaches them about it.

Labor is a commodity. We have all been brainwashed in America with the world "capitalism". There would be zero capitalism without labor. The most important term we should be using is a FREE MARKET where capital and labor are equal and maintain a very strict balance. When all you have is capital in the hands of a few you have tyranny and no middle class. The middle class is the perfect balance between capital and labor. Poor people are more labor oriented and rich are obviously all the ones with the capital. But that's why we need a strong middle class. To keep the power of labor and capital in a nice ying and yang relationship. But people forget this simple idea and get caught up in this whole stupid socialism this capitalism that mantra. When it's not about isms. It's about freedom. You can't have labor without capitalism and vice versa. Neither is more improtant than the other. It's just that laborers are usually disorganized so they wield much less power than the capitalists.

Anyways, republicans and democrats are both ruining our country and are both tyrannical. They are two sides of the same coin.

What you said above is a very good statement, but it will not always be true. For it to work you have to have free flow of information and ideas. For example the data mining, or filtering if you want to call it that, going on in China. With out the free flow of information the people have little choice but to believe what ever they are told. That is why I will always favor a free society over one that tries to control any major decision a person can make.
I am not trying to start a new discussion on what is or is not a free society.

Sometimes I can't help but wonder why the republican and democratic parties haven't each split into two yet. Each party has this group of people who don't really hold the true values of each respective party but seem to be the one's that are loudest and most obnoxious so people can't help but hear them and then they assume everyone in the party must be the same way or hold the same views.

It also shocks me that some would rather be aligned as a democrat/republican and be lumped in with these crazies instead of giving up the affiliation and just going independent. What's in a party name anyway?

They rifled thru the teachter's desk, violating her/his privacy and that is ok with you?
Removing anything is still theft.

According to the Boston Herald, “Maine Republican officials apologized Wednesday for an incident last week in which party faithful attending the state convention removed a pro-labor poster from a Portland middle school classroom and left behind GOP materials.”

I find it honorable that the Maine GOP apologized for taking down a socialist poster. But, why was their just the socialist labor party propaganda poster doing in the classroom in the first place? This seems to be a very one sided curriculum, similar to what Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao and other socialists utilized, to form their totalitarian state. But this must be the new mind set, since many in the current regime, admire Mao.

This is exactly what Glenn Beck encourages people to do every day on his show...

I guess he does have a following

I agree there are insane members of both parties, but to focus just on the Republican who stole the stuff and left the notes, that person is a bit of a nutter.

Its too bad they ant get prints or something and "out" the rascal. Maybe make him wear a sign that says, "This Republican is a thief and has no respect for privacy and law."

Glenn Beck is a complete and utter fraud. He is utterly despicable. I lost all respect for him and his beliefs when he was calling Ron Paul a nut and a whack job when he was running for President. Now he can praise the guy enough. Beck's opinions follow whichever way the wind blows. There is no rhyme or reason.

How do you propose the history of the labor movement in our country be taught?

Should it be taught like an economics class, so that the little kiddies can see how much cheaper and more efficient it is not to have any unions or any of the programs like OSHA, etc. that the labor movement created but without allowing mention of any of the human suffering and exploitation that lead to it?

So I'm guessing that you don't believe the benefits that our workers have achieved via the labor movement have merit?

How is that one sided that a teacher would talk about this?

You know whats really funny is that folks like utah Phillips believe that schools don't typically even mention the labor movement...
