NRA Strong-Arms GOP Into Supporting “Guns in Bars”

Last month, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) signed legislation to allow “concealed carry permit holders to bring loaded guns” into establishments that serve alcohol. The law does not permit gun holders to consume alcohol, though the gun lobby is working to get that changed.

Virginia isn’t alone in its quest to arm its bar patrons. The Georgia state house has also passed a bill that would make it “legal to enter a bar or restaurant with a licensed concealed weapon and get drunk,” as long as the individual doesn’t fire the weapon.

Tennessee, too, is trying to follow in Virginia’s footsteps. Last year, the legislature overrode Gov. Phil Bredesen’s veto to pass a law providing gun owners the right to carry their weapons into any restaurant, except those whose predominant business was to serve alcohol. But the law was declared unconstitutionally vague by a state court, so Tennessee is trying again. This time, the law provides “no exclusions for where guns can be carried, as long as permit holders don’t consume alcohol.”

Ok so the guy gets drunk with a gun and is ok as long as he doesn't fire it..?

I don't know about the rest of you but I've seen some drunk people do things they wouldn't otherwise do and one of them is firing guns at things.

This might end up potentially messy. "avoids bars from here on out"

Again and again the anti-gun crowd complains about potential shootouts or guns just going off. And again and again it just never happens. Every stat says that the concealed carry portion of our society is the most law abiding of the US.
Most shootings happen in the so-called gun free zones by criminals because obviously only the criminals have the guns there! Luckily it’s usually a CCW holder or off duty cop who carries anyway to save the day.
Most of us CCW carriers carry everywhere, and we are always responsible and we just don’t get stupid because we are in a bar. It’s better to be judged by 12 than carried out by 6.
The only shootouts are where even retired cops can’t carry like Chicago, where no guns are allowed. Yeah that really worked out for them……
In short you don’t have a logical argument against people who carry guns just an emotional one. For example just try to find any real bad information against the history of CCW holders across the US, it just doesn’t exist.
It would better to use your time against things that are real problems.

First of all, there are a lot of responsible people who carry guns, but there are also a lot of people who are complete morons, including trained professionals; ie, ergo...the following:

Giants receiver Plaxico Burress accidentally shoots himself in thigh
www.nydailynews.com...

Los Angeles Dodgers Pitcher Vicente Padilla Shoots Himself in the leg While Hunting
technorati.com...

Man shoots himself in the testicles while trying to rob a convenient store
slumz.boxden.com...

Cheney accidentally shoots fellow hunter
www.cnn.com...

Secondly, GUNS AND ALCOHOL DON'T MIX!!!!!!
Even cowboys knew that 100 years ago. Ever seen a western where the sheriff bans guns in town. Do you think he was concerned about gun rights?

Third, why isn't there a requirement to get training and a licensee like for driving?

There has never been any law preventing guns in bars or restaurants in many states. New Hampshire is one of them.

The last time anybody got shot near a bar it was some biker bar where a guy left to go get his gun and waited out in the parking lot to shoot his victim.

I dont know what sort of mythical wild west type behavior opponents to this sort of thing are expecting to see.

It's another one of those "if you blah blah then blood will run in the streets!" freak outs. I have yet to see any one of those freak outs pan out.
