Retirees called for the resignation of President Traian Basescu who last week announced a plan of austerity measures, including pension cuts and salary cuts in the public sector, to avoid raising main taxes.

Romania has about 1.4 million state employees and about 5.5 million retirees.

Similar protests were staged by thousands of other retirees across the country's major cities.

The International Monetary Fund said it recommended a series of "balanced" measures to lower Romania's growing budget deficit, but the authorities in Bucharest decided to rely almost entirely on public spending cuts.

Recession-hit Romania, which is relying on a EUR20 billion IMF-led loan, has pledged to drastically cut public spending and reign in this year's budget deficit to 6.8% of GDP. Cuts include a 25% reduction of public sector salaries and 15% of pensions, unemployment and other social benefits, as well as massive subsidy cuts.

Romania's first quarter gross domestic product shrank by 0.3% in real terms compared with the earlier quarter, a flash estimate of the National Statistics Institute showed Wednesday, which means the country is still in recession.

Unions have threatened Greek-style protests over the austerity plan and an ample protest of about 40,000 people will take place in Bucharest next week, on May 19, and teachers are set to go on full-blown strike as of May 31, boycotting national tests and threatening to freeze the school year.
About 1,000 retirees ended a protest outside the presidential palace in Bucharest, two hours later than planned and after brief scuffles with security forces.

In Iasi 500 students protested against the new education law. This education law will ban students from the university council, taxes will triple, campus taxes will also triple, schoolarships will go down 50% and many more absurd measures.

Greece, Romania, Ireland, Ukraine, then Spain, UK, Portugal Italy & then next is the US then China.

UK already in a death spiral with no way to pay for the rest of the debt now job growth is guaranteed to never happen after 10 billion taken out of the economy today by the tories. The rest of the debt will be written off, just like in Spain where they have half of 16-25 year olds out of work, and 20% unemployment.

We are already in the greatest depression. Without jobs in construction to stimulate growth, we soon won't be able to afford to buy crap from china anymore, so the death spiral continues to china after EU & US.

These unprecedented events are likely to lead to the first great war of the 21st century.

Yes you are 100% right.
Troubled times are ahead but look around people dont care.
No one is interested to talk about whats going to happen in the world.
Threads like "draw aliens" get all the attention while other subjects are of no interest to no one.
I am truly dissapointed because i shared something ,i wanted to show something but it's been ignored.
Thank you and have a nice day.

Not ignored, more like frightened. Frightened for you, and for us. Not sure what to say or how to stop it.

For some of us it might be too late to stop it.
But others still have time to stop the madness or even prepare for it.
Old people are living with 60 euros a month(take another 15% from that),they were called parasites by the president by comparing them to something the Nazis used to do.
The private sector is the skinny guy and the fat guy is the government sector so the skinny guy is carrying the fat guy.

Here is a photo:

Can you see a connection?People have literally turned on each other.

I think with recent events, Greece might get Balkanized like its northern neighbors.

I dont get why the clowns running the show are still trying to steer a sinking ship to safety when its beyond repair. Dont they see they will go down when the system goes down?

Instead of all the bull# why dont they just come clean, tell us the real score, and then propose a solution. If they did that, then I'd probably have some respect for them as it would show they had our interests in mind rather than their own.

Obviously its going to be tough, but nowhere near the hell we will end up in if they just continue on with this charade.

All this could have been avoided if they were not so #ing greedy.

I think people are starting to realize that we needed to take the hit instead of throwing trillions around that did nothing and simply creater a bigger black hole, impossible to escape from. Back when the market crashed i was saying the same thing, yet people in the UK were too busy looking at the short term, using emotional blackmail about how many people would get hurt if we didn't bail out anything that moved....sadly im going to be proven correct in the coming years and like John said, governments will look to war, a war that will dwarf Iraq or Afghanistan.
Europe will be the first, Germany will be able to ride it through better than others because of it's massive manufacturing base...not an economy based on debt like the UK.

Yes my friend things are looking very bad and about to get worst, why people here in the US doesn't care? because they are still living in an illusion of prosperity and the American dream.

At the same time our congress is concocting bills to pass the debt into the tax payer and to control even our rights to produce and consume our own food that right very soon will be exclusively of the government.

Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) Dietary Supplement Bill, S. 3002

the FDA’s control over the right to grow, own, trade, transport, share, serve or eat every food under the sun or morsel that one chooses to put into one’s mouth. The government would be in charge of managing and controlling every aspect of agriculture and food, from seeds to chemicals to animals and their waste; from producers to sellers to consumers, nothing would be safe from their intrusive grasp. It would be a jungle of regulatory schemes and rules that would choke the existing free market food system. It is in essence, a government takeover of food.

www.jbs.org...

Still people doesn't care, because the real eye opener is still hidden from most tax payer, that taxes will be increased that states are cutting budgets, closing schools, social services centers and others, that finally that burden of debt will start to oppress everybody around, be rich or poor.

And then we are all owned by central banks, the fights in Europe of people rioting and fighting back will become an everyday thing here in the US if the truth comes out

And then people will care. . .

If this happens in the US, things will get bloody very quickly. People who lived through the 60's and 70's are the ones who are set to collect Social Security very soon. They know what protests are all about.

Interestingly, this article does not state what sort of salary cuts, the government employees are willing to take. Perhaps they should have their salaries cut by 25% for getting the country into this mess!

The amazing thing is that while people don't want to work, they still want someone to pay for the lack of production their early retirements cause.

We seem to believe that noone is responsible for their own actions!

This is the same attachments that the NWO (IMF) is imposing on those nations that are to get financial help.

People are fighting because is their governments fault that they are in the financial situation they are, they are fighting because their nations will lose their right to selfgovernemnt and will be under a banking rule.

First collapsing nations so they have not choice but to be take over and their citizens indebted.

Banskters are starting to take over nations governments and still people doesn't get it, this is been an agenda for a long time since the Bush Sr. years and the famous one world order

America is already in that path but is been gradually and subtle, but is coming. . . debts are been transfered to the tax payer, states are defaulting . . .

Yes, and it all ties neatly into a convenient package, started by Arizona. People will not like at all that illegals can get more by being here, than a citizen who has paid taxes in the US, for their entire lives!

This does look to get very ugly!

Like another poster just said in another thread, the crap will hit the main street when the baby boomer's start to collect their SS and retirement pensions and the money is not there.

Here in GA a massive cut on education was passed, now tuitions will go up, schools will close and many local colleges as raising tuitions will lower the student body.

But in the city of Albany GA, the local government is not going to cut teacher salaries, they are going to wait for teachers to retire or quit and then rehired on lower salaries, they just voted to keep them while knowing that this means raising taxes to cover up budgets downfall.

but then again Dougherty county and the Albany Citi have very high poverty level so guess who will be gouged.

Yes denigration o f America will start with the states, counties and cities, before it hits the federal level.

Of course that is a problem that can be solved in time.
But there are legitimate people that worked their entire life and just wanna live the rest of their life peacefully.
Let's just come clean that this administration failed, while we build 20 km of highway, other country's in Europe build 120 km of highway with the same price.
