Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks attacked by angry Muslims (Video)

www.examiner. com

Lars Vilks, a Swedish artist who angered Muslims by depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a dog, was attacked Tuesday while giving a university lecture about the limits of artistic freedom.

During the lecture a man in the front row ran up to Vilks and head-butted him, breaking his glasses but leaving him uninjured. Prior to the attack about 15 people had been shouting and trying to interrupt the lecture, which was attended by about 250 people.

Vilks has been the target of numerous threats over his controversial drawing of Muhammad with a dog's body, but Tuesday's incident was the first time he has been physically assaulted. Earlier this year, Mr Vilks was the target of an alleged murder plot involving Colleen LaRose, an American who called herself "Jihad Jane". Jihad Jane has pleaded not guilty, but faces life in prison if convicted.

This man is under constant death threats, much alike Ayaan Hirsi Ali was before she fled the Netherlands and various other people whom are critical of Islam or plainly insult that religion. In recent times, we have had one Muslim who felt it necessary to kill film director Theo van Gogh for being highly critical of Islam in his movie 'submission'. We have had a an intruder trying to kill cartoonist Kurt Westergaard with an axe and plenty of other prominent people who cannot walk down the street freely any longer because they should fear for their lives.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali put it right: 'Why are Muslims so hypersensitive?'

Silencing criticism of Islam by resorting to violence seems to become a normal practice. Who is next?

Hypersensitivity is a sign of feeling insecure. You see many insecure groups nowadays - hardcore-muslims, whiny-liberals, etc.

Insecure people need some love, otherwise they grow dangerous.

Would you, christians, be "happy" if they depicted Jesus (peace be upon him) as a dog? Tell the truth, in your HEART, would you be happy?

And I do not support anyone resorting to violence, I am just stating that I am utterly disgusted by this so called "artist" to depict a person who is holy to 1,5 billions in that way.

I respect all prophets, of all faiths, and wouldnt want them depicted as animals or whatever.

Being unhappy is one thing, threatening to kill people or actually doing it, is another.
I can imagine that many Christians are very unhappy or feel offended by Andres Serrano's 'Piss Christ', but as far as I am aware Christians have not attempted to kill him.

You have every right to be disgusted, to disagree and voice your criticism, if necessary by filing a lawsuit, but if you want to live in our society, you are not allowed to resort to violence. The rules ain't that hard...

That's good, I like that, I seriously do.. I never like individual who like making trouble..

If someone comes to mid city here in Auckland and starts trouble with any nationality, or any culture, or religion, everyone will come together and beat the sh1t out of him. I know, cause I have seen it.

Whether they are white, Islanders, Middle Eastern, blabla doesn't matter. You start sh1t, you better have the physical means, or manpower to defend yourself.

Otherwise get F'd, rick your night, and everyone else's, go home with bruises..

As simple as that.

I wouldn't cry if a Muslim man gets his ass kicked for burning an American flag.

He should find the biggest mosque in Malmö and sucide bomb it, both retaliating with their own medicine and robbing them of their chance of killing him at the same time. Certainly would be ironic.

I feel sorry for the poor swedish cops.. they're usually so calm, collected and nonconfrontational.

Ok South park did a recent experiment lately.
In episode 201 the word Muhammad was bleeped out everytime it was said as not to upset the muslims. Now onto the main point, Jesus is considered to be a prophet of the muslim faith and yet they don't care about him just because he's not their last prophet. Jesus was depicted as watching porn in that episode nobody cared and they had Buddha snorting coc aine and hardly anyone even noticed but yet the word Mohammad can't be said. Somewhere along the line things got messed up and people are getting pretty sick of it.

No, but they did this: "one patron attempted to remove the work from the gallery wall, and two teenagers later attacked it with a hammer" (wiki)

But, we do care. I did not watch that episode, but I know from other cartoons, where Jesus is portrayed in various "funny" ways, that even if I might laugh at the absurdity of it, I still feel this "uneasiness" inside me. Literally, physically. It HURTS me.

Sorry to hear it hurts you but nothing should be safe from someone's opinion. Someone should be able to make fun of something even if it's not right to. It's not right to depict Mohammad as a dog but it's not right to headbutt the person who drew it either. Even if you don't like someone's opinion you should still except it because if you argue back or attack them or whatever the whole mess will get worse. You only live once so at least live free and peacefully.

What is wrong with these people?? My goodness, I don't get it... They seem to only be able to solve their problems with violence. And most of the time it's extreme and brutal.

Isn't Allah a God of truth and peace?

Does He approve of his followers going around cutting peoples heads off and beating people up that don't agree with them? What does that have to do with peace?!

Muhammad is not God. They need to stop worshiping him like one.

Muslims: Get a grip already. We live in a civilized society. Stop the barbarism, stop hurting people. If they are sinners in your religion, then let God deal with them.

depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a dog

I am atheist.
I wonder what would happen to man drawing Jesus as a pig.
Enough?
That's all.
No tolerance for such things.

I totally agree that it is extremely distasteful to mock people’s religions and prophets... And this artist knew what to expect...

In Islam it is Haraam to keep a dog, as a pet, except in cases permitted by the prophet Muhammad (such as hunting, guard dog, live stock control etc...) Dogs are viewed as lowly creatures and many Muslims do not have the same affection for dogs as westerners...

To depict Muhammad as a dog was, in my opinion, an attempt by the artist to push the boundaries as far as he possibly could for personal gain.

This so-called artist, while claiming to be expressing himself and utilising his freedoms, is actually responsible for deeply offending 1.5 billion of the world’s population... In my opinion he is not so much expressing and using his freedoms as abusing them.

However, this does not negate the fact that using or condoning violence, against this vile little man, is completely unacceptable. In the wake of 911, and other terrorist atrocities, Islam has come under extreme scrutiny.

Muslims need to take heed of this and lead by example... Fire cannot be extinguished with fire and to go down the path of violently attacking anyone who disagrees/insults Islam is merely adding weight to the load that is already bearing down on Islam.

As a Christian, it disgusts me to see Christ depicted in the way that he is... The media constantly makes a mockery of Christianity from shows such as Family Guy, Simpsons, rescue me, south park etc...

Some of the things i have seen deeply offends me... But i will NEVER respond with violence...

The only time i respond with violence is when under the threat of violence to myself or my family... as a Christian i cannot claim to be the representative of a peaceful religion only to punch the first person who s'n-word's or disagrees...

There are some Muslims who need to realise this... Their actions often reflect (unfairly) on the whole of Islam. If Islam wants to be seen as a religion of peace (which i strongly believe it is) then the vast majority of peaceful Muslims need to be more outspoken with regards to their condemnation of violent responses! And this condemnation needs to be unconditional and without excuses... we need to build bridges and face unfairness and discrimination with calmness and composure. This applies to ALL religions and belief systems at a time when ALL faith-based beliefs are under attack!

Sadly i have seen many religious people act in a way that contradicts everything there faith stand for...

As Ghandi once said...

I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.

That quote may offend some... but he did have a point...

Peace!

No,I would not like seeing Jesus/Yeshua depicted as a dog. There are
those who do depict anything christian as being dogs or kuffar.I don't
see a lot of evidence of Jesus/Yeshua being respected by too many here.
Jesus/Yeshua advocated peace and forgiveness, not hatred and violence.

I don't see any evidence of peace coming from the muslims.I have only
seen them display hatred, intolerance and violence towards others.I have
heard their religious leaders encourage "the faithful" to commit violence
against those who are not muslim. If the muslims want to be seen as a
peaceful religion, they must first act like peaceful people.

Maybe.. but it could also be because the thing he was drawing was a rondellhund, in english roundabout dog. Spontaneous artworks that started appearing in the middle of roundabouts in swedish cities during 2006.
The drawing was also supposed to be part of an exhibition with dogs being the theme.

en.wikipedia.org...

They're almost all dogs.. still, doesn't mean he wasn't just drawing Muhammad as a dog just to provoke, just wanted to make things a little bit clearer. According to himself he wanted to test the waters when it comes to political correctness and the boundaries for art and religion, saying it's perfectly ok to bash the US and Isreael while Islam is a no no.

I'll support his right to draw whatever he wants until the day I die, either you can make fun of everything or you can't, no exceptions. Killing people to persuade them is the definition of terrorism and I wont stand for it.

I view Jesus as a prophet/spiritual teacher but I don't get my panties in a bunch about it when people constantly bash him or depict him in a negative fashion, and neither do most christians I've talked about it with.

But they used violence, and using violence against someone exercising his freedom of speech is unnacceptable. The drawing is stupid and inappropiate, but that changes nothing.

The muslims in that room were a bunch of pathetic, insecure morons.

All this showed is how *weak* their beliefs in their faith truly are. All it takes is one satirical cartoon to shake the foundations of their religion and they resort to violence.

While I dislike all religions, I particularily despise Islam. What a waste of time.
