Eunuch regiment needed to protect Indian borders, minister says

www.telegraph.co .uk

"In my humble opinion, if eunuchs are engaged in policing or paramilitary forces they would do a better service to the nation," said Tako Dabi, home minister of the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Mr Dabi sent a letter to Indian Home Minister P. Chidambaram to offer his idea for the improved defence of the country.

"Why can't there be a separate regiment of eunuch community in our country?" he wrote in the letter.

This is pretty interesting. It was only last year that transexuals got the right to vote as 'others.'

Is this showing the gradual acceptance of "eunuchs?" Possibly showing the modernisation of the culture?

I don't agree with the whole idea of a "seperate regiment" though. It's like the Nazi's in a way - seperating those they believe are lower explicitly from those that are accepted.

Any thoughts?

I'm guessing there is the issue of the uniform
so am guessing that a separate regiment would allow them the right to have a uniform more perhaps towards their own choice..

If so, then I applaud this move

Modernisation? This is a huge step backwards. Eunuchs, or their creation should never be accepted.

I think you just rather aptly summed up the entirety of the Indian social model. It is like Nazi's in a way. Infact the Indians are great fans of Hitler and use Mein Kampf as basis for a business model. They even have a national socialist movement.

This was spawned out of their archaic caste system. I find their culture to be rather offensive and avoid contact with it whenever possible.

I think it could be quite a modern approach, especially if it means allowing Transvestites or transsexuals to wear a more feminine uniform of their choice.. I am not even sure how we handle that issue in the Western military.

The term is used in a different fashion today. You will find in eastern cultures androgyny is a prized trait. In fact many shaman were actually hermaphroditic as this was considered the best state for a holy man-both male and female.

Surely artificial minds would be more apt at handling this than having someone who has had their sexual nature removed - the ramifications for potential psychiatric disorders are huge, especially in a system which still has a caste hierarchy already in place.

While a radical thought which I think there should be more of I don't think this particular one - especially in light of their positions with a governement - is very good.

The best alternative given the circumstances is to accept that the situation is hostile and requires more communication.

I couldn't help myself here folks. This is the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this title.

The source states this

n India the term "eunuch" is mostly used to refer to cross-dressers and pre- and post-operative transsexuals.

Indian eunuchs are severely marginalised and, unable to gets jobs, rely on begging and the sex trade for income.

They also attend weddings and births uninvited, as many people believe it is inauspicious to turn them away without giving them money.

The typical definition of a eunuch refers to a castrated male.

This is one mans idea to put these people to work. The same man came up this great notion

Dabi is known for his original ideas. In March he defended policemen who consumed alcohol on duty saying it gave them extra energy.

Hmmm.... Gives me an idea to protect our southern US border.

If they are feared within Indian society then perhaps this move could also promote a much more positive image..

Like any change to a military force, it requires time. If memory serves me correctly, at one time in the United States of America, those who were of African origin were kept seperated from white soldiers, and it was not until after World War II were both military forces were put together as one fighting force. The fact that they are starting to realize that such is just as valuable as those who are non eunuch's is a good start.

I can see how it might be a different meaning. But one must remember they do have a habit of castrating and sterilising men even in this day and age. And as I've stated they're a very fascist people.

If someone willingly becomes transsexual, that is ok for me. But if they are forced by custom or their family caste to get the chop for the state or society or religion. Then I am opposed to it.

Did you read it? Most men castrate themselves these days as part of religious ceremony. Most of these guys are just transsexuals/transvestites though.

Yes I did. And as you just said most men castrate themselves as part of religious ceremony.

Maybe the term is mostly used to refer to transsexuals but it has another meaning. And that meaning has been around for a long time.

I don't think pretending this idea is solely aimed at transsexuals just because the telegraph put a picture of some cross dressers on the article and said that they're actually talking about cross dressers and transsexuals is an accurate representation of the Indian mind set or what this man is alluding to.

I'm sure a "eunuch" of whatever variety is just as low as any untouchable in their societies eyes.

Dalit

And I'm sure this blokes not really motivated by tolerance when he wants to form these "eunuchs" into a segregated military group and then pack them off to the border.

Listen to some other phrases he uses

A regiment of eunuchs should be established to guard India's borders and leading politicians, a state minister said on Tuesday, citing their "loyalty and integrity".

"In my humble opinion, if eunuchs are engaged in policing or paramilitary forces they would do a better service to the nation,"

How is employing Eunuchs of any variety for paramilitary service or guarding "leading politicians" a step forward instead of a step back? This really sounds a lot more like an idea that goes towards regulating them back in their traditional roles in Asian society.
