Blah blah blah.
Views I don't like? Yep I don't like em, doesn't make them any less nationalistic and racist like Mr White Pride I responded to. What a joke. Oh and if I don't like it leave? No, I'd sooner bash a Nazis skull in than take his advice.

I know what Freedom means, but you are under the false illusion that immigrants have the freedom to impede on other people's rights. How can Freedom flourish if there are no rules and laws to ensure it is upheld? Are you suggesting we all have the freedom to do what we want when we like? Where do you draw the line?

I agree. So what's all this demanding that people be "courteous" so you won't be offended?? That's PC! You're smothering in it!

I see you have had a momentary lapse in logic. So now expecting those that immigrate into another country to respect the social norms and culture of that country is being "smothered" in PC? People that are not courteous will probably not be respected and included by others living there. What happens when this occurs? People like you and the rest of the PC brigade start crying that we are so mean and insensitive to foreigners. Do you see the double standards?

Unfortunately, many people on this board who preach freedom only do so when talking about THEIR freedoms! Other people's freedoms don't matter. The hypocrisy is THICK here lately!

That is a lie and you know it. People on here usually complain about how accommodating the wishes and desires of immigrants leads to unpleasant consequences for them and the majority of others already living there. Unless of course, the immigrants are courteous and respectful of the country in which they immigrate. Since in your eyes that is asking way too much, there will continue to be friction. What happens when the amount of friction begins to increase?

I think you will find that if you moved to some other nations and you
tried to dress like perez hilton you'd be dead.

The US isn't perfect and its barely been around for a little more than
3 full human lifespans.

A lot of ppl do not realize that 234 years can be placed into 3
lifetimes of 78 years each.

The US is a lot more tolerant now than it was in 1865.

It is a lot more tolerant than it was during the civil rights movement.

As an native american I can tell you we get treated a lot better
than we did around the time of the land run.

My great grandmother on my mom's side was afraid to get on the
indian rolls because they might come burn her out in the middle
of the night.

All things take time, and prejudice will take time to fade no matter
how much you decry it.

I will agree that ppl need to come together as one nation, with one
language as multi culturalism ends up with a divided nation.

Just like the other posters that gave examples.

Though I think the one world language idea has some VERY bad
ppl behind it and why I do not trust it or them.

[snip]

In the 1600s it was common knowledge that you could walk down the streets of New York (then New Amsterdam) and hear up to 16 different languages being spoken.

In my opinion this is exactly what makes America great.

There has been an influx of racist freedom-hating xenophobes on this website over the past year and it's pretty obvious.

Everybody on this site pretty much hate GWB when he was in office and rightfully so. Now you have a [snip] of people that hate Obama (which is okay, though I might not agree) but a lot of these people claim that things were soooo much better under bush.

Please. It's obvious that there's a lot of scared racists in this country who found out about ATS after doing a lot of googling and reading forwarded e-mails since Obama's campaign.

If a woman wants to wear a scarf on her head let her!! Who cares why!!

Would you tell an Amish woman not to wear a dress below her knees?!! They dress modestly because yeah, seeing a girl walking around scantily clad turns guys on.

I'm a male. I like to think I'm in control and above my animal instincts. But when I see a pretty girl walking down the street wearing next to nothing, boy do I want to go say hi and introduce myself and (since I don't have a girlfriend) see if I can have sex with her somehow. Obviously that practically never happens but if women were covered up a lot I wouldn't go up to them. When I see a women in a slutty outfit I think "SHE'S A SLUT!! YAY!!"

Whereas when I see a girl all covered up (or especially a muslim girl wearing a head-scarf) I think to myself, "Well there ain't a chance in hell I can have sex with that girl" And thus I don't even bother.

And quite frankly I think they want it that way.

If people didn't want to wear the burkas they wouldn't.

Stop being a racist tw@

As an immigrant myself, I don't want to "assimilate" and even if I wanted to, it would be impossible for me to do so. Hear me out before you throw rocks at me.

Assimilation is a process that makes an immigrant indistinguishable from the majority population. It means completely giving up your formal, "ethnic" identity and it's rarely achievable by 1st generation immigrants (unless they came to their new country as very young children). Assimilation is also not a unilateral process, meaning that not only you have to consider yourself part of the majority population, but you also need to be recognised by the majority population as such.

In other words, I don't want to assimilate because it would mean for me to give up my real identity and invent a new one. I am not willing to do so as long as I still have family and friends in my native country. And it would be impossible for me to assimilate because no matter how good I speak the language of my adoptive country, I would always speak it with an accent and therefore I wouldn't fool anyone that I am a "native".

Also, in my opinion, you don't have to become assimilated in order to be an integrated, functional individual in your new country. You only need to become acculturated to some degree. There's a difference between "assimilation" and "acculturation".

To ask for immigrants to acculturate is common sense. To ask for them to assimilate is basically to tell them "I'd better not be able to tell that you have a different ethnic/cultural background than me, or else!".

Edit: Oh but I don't think it's a fascist thing. The Nazis couldn't care less if a Jew was assimilated or not. I'd rather compare it to soviet Russia, where they were doing their best to erase the ethnic and national differences between their various peoples.

You are the one side-stepping. The onus to integrate into another country is on the immigrant, not those already living there. If you want to live in another country, you should have respect for that country and fit in as best you can.

YES! Absolutely! You're demanding YOUR freedom but putting restrictions on the freedoms of others who choose to live here. I see the double standard VERY clearly.

Restrictions only need to be put on those that disrupt the social cohesion of the majority. I'm not the one creating social distress for other people in my country. I'm not taking part in behaviour that is damaging my country's image and reputation. It is a small percentage who immigrate and refuse to integrate that do these things.

I don't know what you people are likely to do. It bothers me that my country is so full of intolerance and hatred. It scares me that people who call themselves American and tout the Constitution don't know what it says or means.

Maybe because I am not American. I don't believe I have referred to the Constitution at all in this thread. Sure you are not labelling me as belonging to a certain group?

It infuriates me that people like you talk the talk about "freedom", but refuse to acknowledge other people's freedom. Only those with whom you agree are blessed with this false freedom of yours.

I know what Freedom is and I know that it does not pertain only to those whose ideas and lifestyles I agree with. Why are you continually trying to frame me as somebody who is only concerned with his own Freedom and not that of others?

It's scary to think people who love their country and want things to stay the same are labelled as racist and xenophobic when they speak out on issues affecting the country they live in.
