A German research outpost, Neumayer Station on the Ekström Ice Shelf Ice in Antarctica was home to a spectacular show on April 11th 2010.

Geophysicist Sara Huber is working there and she took the picture on April 11th just after a coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetic field. The aurora australis grew so bright, the snowy ground and even the igloos reflected their green glow.

Here are a couple of images:

If your headline was more truthful, I would have never posted here.

I would not have even opened this thread to look.

Like "Antartic ice shelf has green aurora over it". I wouldn't have cared.

But the sly sensationalism in the title "Antartic ice shelf turns green" got my attention like "How the hell is that possible?"

So your thread title is misleading. IMO lol.

Why? Because it did not turn green at all.

Well it looks pretty green to me

If it helps, I had to have a good hard think about which forum to put it in...

Space Exploration or Fragile Earth??

It took me a good 30 seconds to decide on Fragile Earth because it was a phenomena seen here on earth.

PS. Thread Title is everything here on ATS.

Sad but true.

Thanks for replying

Yah I have to agree with muzzleflash. I was expecting some sort of crazy green algae bloom or some such. But on the other hand I have to say, WOW that's crazy beautiful!
