"THEY" must destroy all sovereignty.

"THEY" must destroy all individuality.

"THEY" must destroy all critical thought.

"THEY" must make you feel guilt.

"THEY" must make borders non existent.

"THEY" must destroy Responsibility.

"THEY" must destroy Liberty.

"THEY" must destroy borders.

"THEY" must destroy YOU!

Working pretty well so far. You must not have ANY individualistic tendencies. You must not believe you are better than anyone else. You must not believe that self righteous indignation is okay. You must not believe that true charity is real. You must not believe that the individual is more important than the collective.

You will be ASSIMILATED! You will become the BORG!

Resistance is FUTILE!

That does not apply here and is not the source of my outrage. Schools still have dress codes where hateful, pornographic, clothing portraying illegal substances, sexually explicit etc., is prohibited.

My point and the source of my outrage is that the American flag or colors should never be included in that list. Not even for 'one day on a holiday where it may be insensitive.' This isn't about freedom of speech. It's about being offended by something that should in no way be considered offensive or problematic.

Like I said previously, we don't know these kids. Is this their typical attire? Are they problematic to begin with? It's not for us to make those determinations but the school and classmates would know.

Edit: Damn BB code.

Actually that is a common misconception.

The CRS Report for Congress
The United States Flag: Federal Law Relating to Display and Associated Questions
Updated April 14, 2008
John R. Luckey
Legislative Attorney
American Law Division

"The Flag Code addresses the impropriety of using the flag as an article of
personal adornment, a design on items of temporary use, and item of clothing. The evident purpose of these suggested restraints is to limit the commercial or common usage of the flag and, thus, maintain its dignity. The 1976 amendments to the Code recognized the wearing of a flag patch or pin on the left side (near the heart) of uniforms of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The Code also states that the flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever."

I'm not american (well, technically I am, being from Argentina and all) but I don't see why those kids should remove their shirts, I mean, they're in the United States. So it's ok to live in the country but not respect the flag?

If an american came here on the 9th of July, our indepence day, and wore a shirt with the U.S flag I wouldn't be offended.

Right on Ashley.

The real problem here is that the American flag is even being thought of as offensive in our own country. There is something very wrong with that.

I don't know what these people are doing here if they feel offended by our flag no matter what day it is. It is insulting to all Americans really.

Let's simplify

Cinco de Mayo - A sort of Mexican Heritage Day
Celebrated pretty much only in the USA
Some kids wear the USA flag to a school in the USA
Some are offended, Kids are sent home.

I just want to say...To all of the people who are bashing on the kids because they may have had the intent of making a statement...Think of this.

Our Founding Fathers made a statement when they wrote the Declaration of Independence. I'm pretty sure they intended to make a damn statement that surely incited violence.

What the kids are doing here is enforcing that they are in the USA and should have the right to display it on any given day.

For everyone of those people that are telling me that those kids weren't in the right for speaking up or making a statement, I'm disappointed.

When you don't like something, you make a damn statement (hopefully not physically) and you make sure people listen. If you want change, you don't just sit on your ass and wait for it.

Maybe these kids are sick of illegal immigration too and may actually be a lot more intelligent than we think and purposefully wore the USA flag to school to make that statement.

People around here have become so brainwashed with PC this and PC that that we forgot to speak out. Constant appeasing and compromising so other people can feel "Better" be it for right or for wrong.

Bottom line about this article for me is this:

If you're offended by this country's symbol on any given day, then GTFO.

oh and whoever said kids don't have rights in school...That must be the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life.

Well, personally I would've worn black...cause that's all I wore in HS. II wonder if the mortecia act would've offended them? It's crazy though, I have seen cinco de mayo celebrations where the American Flag and the Mexican flag was right next to each other. In my hometown there's a peurto rican festival, they display all the country's flags down the center stroll. This just sound really retarded to me. Even if it was planned WTH does it matter? Can't they honor both alongside as a symbol of recipricol respect? I see a lot of disrespect here. On the school VP's side and of the "offended" students.

The people that run that school should be THROWN out! What in the hell are these people thinking? I wish I was governor of that state, I'd fire those people. This situation reminds me of that time when a school had a Mexican flag raised outside the school, instead of an American flag.

Awesome, another thread dealing with hate toward Mexicans.

I'm not being an apologist, I'm just sick and tired of news articles like these. I know that this is absolutely stupid and this should not have happened, but I like how articles like this just pretty much lure in people that seem to subtly show their hatred toward Mexicans.

Not hatred for the Mexicans, hatred for the governments and the hatred of idiocy.

Sorry, name me ONE country that allows illegal immigration as the US of A has.

One.

hmm..upon thinking about this further, I really don't know if there's really anything noble about this. I'm too heavily reminded of an ethnicity having a rally and the KKK being there to protest just because they can.

I dunno, I knew kids in school who did things like this and it wasn't for any kind of American pride, it was to be spiteful because they found it funny. It's even more feasible because it's in CA. A generation of kids who watch adult themed shows, laugh at racial humor without understanding it's meant to be ironic (i.e. South Park, Family Guy, Chapelle's show etc.) is happening right now and these things are a reflection of it.

not stating facts, this is just my experience. I graduated from school 4 years ago in LA

Why the beef? Because they are of Mexican heritage. No mention that they are illegals. Just of Mexican heritage. One day out of 365? C'mon, what's the harm in allowing people to celebrate their heritage? Who are we going to diss next. The Irish and St. Paddy's Day? What about Black History Month?

The "beef" is that NO ONE said they couldn't celebrate their mexican heritage on May 5th.

The "beef" is that it's our (well, not yours) country and allowing mexicans to celebrate HERE IN THE U.S. has absolutely no bearing on what any other person HERE IN THE U.S. is allowed to wear.

Again, the right thing to do would have been for the principal to tell the mexicans as a high school civics lesson that this is an example of freedom here in the U.S.

What is wrong with these mexicans that they think only 5 kids in American flag tee shirts somehow ruins "their day"? Try just being happy that you ARE allowed to celebrate "your day".

From other later accounts, it seems the right things are already starting to happen beginning with the school board saying this should never have been handled in this way.

Stop being ridiculous, most Mexicans probably thought this was silly. Gusto Mexico, pero espero ellos gubernamento no asi mucho corronompido.

The problem is the people forcing these unreasonable PC constraints on everyone.

Just the same as being against illegal immigration isn't racist, it is defending workers of all groups. The illegal immigrant population is the modern day equivalent of slavery. That is bad for everyone, except the employers of the illegals. It is bad for U.S. born workers, legal immigrants, and illegal immigrants.

It is the people like you who paint everything as racist that are the problem.

I'm all for celebrating ones cultural heritage, we all have something to offer this country. I must agree with the general consensus, that was a poorly handled situation. I wish i could say that those in charge who sent him home acted in his best interest, but this has happened too many times. It's like reverse discrimination. How messed up is it when a Hispanic like myself feels ashamed that things like this are going on in this country. The principle has no backbone along with the rest of the country when it comes to immigration reform. I find it infuriating that one would be offended by THIS country's own flag, it doesn't matter what "holiday" it is. I don't have a problem with anyone hoisting any national flag on their homes or on their shirts, some would object to that but I don't. What i do object to is challenging someones rights (freedom of speech and expression) by the very flag that symbolizes those rights!

Culturally, I am Mexican, that's how I was brought up. I am damn proud of it too. However, my nationality is American and the American flag will always fly higher in my book.

OK, this is tiring and I'll address it this one time. Your one trick pony of pointing out I'm not American is quite tedious and lame. To start with I probably know more of what it's like to be American because I read a tremendous amount. AND I don't limit to an extremely narrow perspective like yours.

Can we get past this now?

What is wrong with these mexicans that they think only 5 kids in American flag tee shirts somehow ruins "their day"?

Did you read your own source? The administration feared for the boys safety. THAT was his motivation for asking them to turn them inside out, then leave when they wouldn't comply. We don't know the circumstances behind this issue. Maybe these kids bash Hispanics and this was a last straw? I won't say that it is without corroboration but the vice principle made his decision on something. If not, this makes no sense.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

I see your point now. I'm coming at this from the Freedom of Speech position. But to your point... What is seen to be possibly offensive or not is a matter of opinion. If you ask 5 different people a list of things that someone SHOULD or SHOULDN'T find offensive, they aren't all going to answer the same way. If the American flag is on that list, someone could absolutely think that, in certain situations, it could be offensive, because there is a lot of emotion tied up in that symbol. Especially if it was purposefully displayed to convey offense, which seems likely at this school. The kids meant to offend. What they used to offend really doesn't matter. It's like wearing a t-shirt of Piss Christ on Good Friday. If you set out to offend someone, chances are someone is going to be offended.

My point is that relying on what universally should or shouldn't be offensive is a subjective judgment, because offense is a personal thing. People who ARE offended wouldn't agree with you that they shouldn't be.

People are offended by just about anything. By God. By freedom. By someone simply speaking their minds.

piddles, I spent 5 of my last 7 years in Fresno California.

I know for a FACT that illegals are used to keep prices down in the construction industry. FACT, PERIOD!

I left as many others did back in 08. I myself feel that some type of amnesty, where we situationally decide who is allowed to stay and who is forced to leave, needs to be decided.

Sorry, the main reason I left Fresno was the criminal, I am not talking drugs, I am talking MURDER, RAPE, ASSAULT, etc etc etc.

Yes, it ROYALLY sucks the situation in Mexico. I actually felt sorry for my subs and their employees. I made calls several times. Not because I hated anyone, but because I thought it was the best thing to do for our country.

I felt like a piece of crap everytime I think back to the times I called the INS or ICE.

Here is the thing, our government here in the US of A uses everything in it's arsenal to divide us. Including flooding the US of A with immigrants. Both legal and illegal. Just the numbers on permanent legal immigrants is 26 million since 1980. Do you understand what that means. If you took all immigration and work visas, the US of A has allowed in the neighborhood of 55-100 Million people to emigrate to the US of A since 1980.

Do you see the problem? Do you see that maybe this was a plan all along?

I mean seriously. To flood a country with this many immigrants to a nation, does this NOT raise some kind of question?

You must understand that we as a nation, worry about our very existence. We must worry about the fact that something is under the very reasoning behind the flooding of our country?

Sure we can.

I was just being accurate by clarifying the use of the word "our" since I know you are a proud Canadian and might have taken offense if I hadn't said it that way. Your reaction makes it seem like you have some sort of chip on your shoulder. If so, sorry to have tweaked it.

BTW, do I from now on get to post about Canadian issues without taking flak from you?

And you can cut the patronizing "you probably know more about the U.S. than I do" BS. You don't and you never will (hint: you're not the only person in the world that reads a lot). I also travel a lot ...

And yes I read my own source - more condescension? I was responding to other, later posts.
