Neither the Palestinian leadership nor senior Israeli officials were optimistic Wednesday, as proximity talks mediated by US Middle East envoy George Mitchell opened.
Speaking to CNN on Wednesday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called the Netanyahu government "extreme and uncooperative." The PA president added that "since they are an elected government we have no choice to work with them," but warned that he will halt negotiations if building in the West Bank continues.
MOSCOW - President Dmitry Medvedev will travel to Syria next week, the Kremlin said Wednesday, the first visit by a Kremlin chief as Russia seeks to tighten ties with Cold War-era allies in the Middle East. "Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will visit the Syrian Arab Republic on an official visit on May 10-11," the Kremlin said in a statement. A Kremlin spokesman said Medvedev's two-day trip would be the first ever visit to the country by any Russian or Soviet head of state.
