Drill Baby Drill! Of course we should keep drilling for oil both on US land and in US waters.

Yeah, that's right Drill Baby Drill!

Sure we had an accident and I agree that its tragic, but we are Americans. We don't give up just because we make a few mistakes along the way. Where would the Space Program be if we gave up on putting a man on the moon just because a few animals and a few people accidentally died along the way?

What would be have done for bridges if we quit just because some people died building them? What would we do for the power provided by Hoover dam if we quit just because some men died building it and we killed a bunch of fish? With every bit of progress, you can expect some pain along the way, but that doesn't mean you give up and go in your dark closet and cry yourself to sleep. Have we become a bunch of worrisome females, because of the Estrogen in the water?

When did we become such a bunch of quitters? Being a quitter is the first step to being a LOSER! We need this oil to become free from being dependent on foreign countries for our oil. Drilling our own oil is good for the economy and for reducing the deficit. We pay out $450 billion dollars a year importing oil. That is nealy a half a trillion dollars per year that we could keep in this country.

To save our country, we need to drill everywhere we can. Drill on the land, drill in the sea. Drill everywhere. Drill in national parks, animal sanctuaries, all federal lands, peoples backyards. Wherever in the US and our territories there is a significant amoung of oil we should be drilling for it.

So it is time to man-up. Let's clean up this mess in the gulf, dust off our clothes, put better safeguards in place, and then DRILL BABY DRILL!

I thought America was a land of progress and integrity, where people create innovative solutions to problems and better and more efficient ways to do things.

Shouldn't we be moving past oil?

Sure we should eventually move past oil but that isnt even practical for probably 50 more years. Do you want to stop every 40 miles as you travel down i-75 from Michigan to Florida? How are you going to make a battery powered jet? How are you going to make a battery powered train?

The best bang for the buck right now is to innovate and find better more efficient ways to suck all of the oil out of this country as we can, before we more bankrupt than we already are.

I agree, it should not deter us from drilling. On land? Go for it. Its not good when there's an accident, obviously, but at least its localized and you can get people to the problem. Shallow water drilling? Again, go for it. At least if there's a problem, you can get to a well that's only a few hundred feet deep. However, I do think we need to take a long look at the safety procedures in place, as well as just whether or not we're reaching beyond our technical capabilities with these deep water wells. One thing seems clear at this point: we may have the technology to drill under 5,000 feet of water, but we sure as heck don't have the technology to quickly repair a major problem at that depth and before major ecological damage results. In light of that, maybe we need to re-evaluate whether those deep water wells are worth the risk until we can.

Additionally, we need to boost the Coast Guard's budget for response to this type of incident. If we're going to drill offshore, lets make sure we're not lacking for the ability to deal with it once it hits the surface. They're doing all they can, but it just seems they're totally and completely overwhelmed.

Well I agree with most of what you say, but I figure we should learn how to cap a well deeper than 5000ft from this experience. Once we figure it out we will get better at it.

Hopefully. They haven't capped it yet, though.

I'm 100% in support of oil drilling, but I want it done in a safe and responsible manner. Right now, this incident looks like it could ruin the Gulf Coast's ecology and economy for the next 10-20 years. BP, and to a lesser extent, the entire oil industry, has a burden to prove that they can do this safely and while I think they deserve every opportunity to do that, we have to be certain that there's not an undue risk involved.

I fully agree that we should work to reduce the risk by puttng better safeguards in place and making sure they are in place.

10-20????????????????????? YEARS? Are you kidding me? That is a most optimistic outlook. Try more like a generation! Prince William Sound is still suffering from the damage done by Exxon Valdez and this could make that tragedy pale in comparison.

I believe 20 years is considered a generation.

Just sayin'

Oddly enough, you sound like a BP employee..

I'm sure that's not the case, but you understand.

No we should not drill for more oil, we should invest in alternative energy.

50 years? Your kidding right?

The electric car was here in the 80's.

Wind power could be used to power the entire united states. Let's not forget geothermal or wave energy as well.

It takes commitment and willingness to change.

So are you saying we should just be a bunch of quitters and stop drilling for oil because somebody screwed up?

This is how we got in this mess of importing so much oil in the first place. One little spill off of California and then all the Libs started whining and made us stop. Now we are screwed unless we drill our own.

AMERICA BURN BABY, BURN!

Your post is extremely ignorant and very typical of an oil addicted American. "Killed some fish along the way?" Are you really that pathetic and mentally challenged?

Have you looked into the SCOPE of this oil spill? It has destroyed an entire ecosystem.. Do you know that that means cowboy? You think your country is just going get up and over this, brush yourselves off and continue to DRILL BABY DRILL? (P.S I really really loathe the way you yanks throw that word "baby" around, makes me sick).

Your "American Empire" is failing at every turn. America is failing baby, you are collapsing. And let me tell you right now, this oil fiasco is your nations last nail in the coffin, it's your death blow. And as much as it pisses me off, when your clusterf@#k country goes down it will be bringing the world down with it.

But you know what, when everything around us has collapsed, and the planet is poisoned, I'll at least take some pleasure in knowing people like you aren't around anymore

I am not sure if you have checked lately but we dont have money to invest in unproven technology. Have you looked at electric cars on the market now. You get like 40 miles on a several hour charge. We cannot run a country like that. I know you dont understand Americans because you are Canadian, but we just dont roll like dat.

It's not unproven.

Look it up.

I'm not even joking.

It's all there waiting for you to realize that oil is STUPID and never should have been used in the first place.

20 years would be a generation. I'm not saying the region will be back to normal as though nothing happened in that time, just that I think you'll start seeing it bounce back significantly by then. Certainly, there will be some longer term damage done that may take several decades to repair, and some species may even be lost that obviously are irreplaceable.

Yeah you keep dreaming. We will be the last man standing. If all the money runs out and we fill the whole ocean with oil, we will be the last dog to die.

You know why that is.. because we arent a bunch of quitters. We will fight until the last dog dies, just like President Clinton sad. Yeah Baby!

Oh and by the way dont blame us for the gulf disaster. It was caused by BRITISH Petroleum.

What do you do.. ride a bike to work in the Canadian winter? You are being a hypocrite. Modern day Canada couldnt even exist without oil. If electric cars were proven superior to gas powered cars people would be buying them.

Do you realise gas would have to be like 9 or 10 dollars per gallon for people to break even on a hybrid. It is a con game.

Do you really want a car where you have to replace 10k worth of batteries every few years.

Yeah? What about when your FUBAR nation erupts into civil war? Where's your patriotism going to get you then?

Your nation is imploding. Do you get that? Imploding not exploding. Your a nation of over the top oil guzzling energy wasting cowboys, you love it, don't you?

I wonder what Americans like you will do when things are really coming apart at the seams.. Strap on your American flag underwear and lock and load your fully automatic weapon and hit your burning streets as your own military are wiping you out? That's where its heading pal, there isn't enough energy left in the world for you to keep your over the top lifestyle any longer.

You have used the majority of it up on your SUV's and giant casino's in the desert. And the world hates you for it too

The world is just jealous of us. I bet they would beg just to ride in my big black Escalade. It gets about 8 miles to the gallon on a good day. I bet they dream of coming to one of our giant air conditioned casinos and they wish they could have a closet full of guns so they could defent their families instead of cowering to their government.

I know it is hard for you Europeans to understand. You have been under your governments thumb since WW2. You keep standing and waiting for them to throw you another bone soyou can get an extra day or two of vacation. You are lazy. We work hard and we play hard in a big gas guzzling SUV.

Some weekends I attach a trailer to my SUV with some quad runners on it so I can go out in the desert and waste some gas having fun. Somedays I just pour a gallon or two of gas on the firewood just because I like the big fire. The weeks I dont take out the quadrunners I take my big boat to a lake. Man talk about sucking up some gas. WooooooHooooo!

You do realize that even if we do drill baby drill the price of oil will not drop and we will continue to import just as much if not more foreign oil than ever.

That's just how the TPTB roll!

They will never slow imports as looting Americas wealth has been priority 1 since Vietnam. We also want a hand in their government and oil gives us an in. Its politics, drilling wont help our economy just make these corporations richer.
