Reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has made a rare top secret trip across the border into China, according to reports.
It is Kim's first trip abroad since he suffered a suspected stroke in 2008
The neighbouring visit, his first in four years, gives Kim a chance to shore up relations with his only ally in the region at a time of growing tensions on the peninsular.
He is understood to have travelled aboard an armoured train, in part due to his phobic fear of flying.
