What would an appropriate penalty be for BP's destruction of an entire ecosystem?

So you do not deny that you are advocating the murder of the CEO and his family?

That is upsetting. To think you would have his wife and child murdered because of an accident on a rig that his company uses....

Stalinesque is the word.

I want to give you a million stars, also I friended you. Plus you should open a comment section on your profile.

Honestly, these kind of accidents should be seen as metaphorical reminders of the direction we are in is stupid. If the off shore drilling platform wasn't there this problem wouldn't exist - aren't we supposed to be weaning ourselves off fossil fuels for the future of humanity.

This plant should be shut down, if not nationalised with all profits going to funding renewable energies.

And the CEOs should be made to clean up some of the mess if for nothing more to be seen as a token gesture.

You asked so here goes Death. See, this will cause the death of not only the eco structure here, but cultures, lifestyles and family businesses on a large scale. I live where I do because it is the most beautiful place on earth for me, and when this reaches us......game over. So, yup spin it how you want, death seems a viable punishment.

Everyone knows that pipes burst, right? It's no secret.
It's a common problem that exists from household appliances and upwards.

So, when this oil pipeline was at the 'idea' stage, (and seeing as there's more at stake here than a flooded kithchen floor to worry about), did anyone think to ask what is to be done if/when this oil pipe springs a leak?

The damage this does is too devastating to leave this question unanswered
BEFORE this oil pipe got past the 'idea' stage.

Can we not, in future, demand that they have preventative measures in place before they are allowed to begin production?
And, if they cannot guarantee 100% that any foreseeable 'accident' will not affect the ecology, then they shouldn't be permitted to proceed. This isn't just THEIR planet.

We have to learn from our mistakes because until we do this will all happen again and again.
Our beautiful planet is being raped and tortured by these greedy, never-satisfied people.
But we are as guilty, because we keep letting them.
Dooby

Wow, I must have really struck a nerve on that comment. I think that is the longest comment I have ever seen you post.

Socialization. Does not mean giving people things. That is WHAT they want you to believe.

Socialization, means the governmental control of the means of production.

Do not try and sidestep this definition to make people think that socialization has ANYTHING to do with the betterment of the PEOPLE.

Sorry, but all tyranny begins at the end of a barrel of a gun.

Look at one of the first comments, calling for the nationalization of oil.

So, you think the nationalization is going to help prices? Do you really believe that will be the case? What a JOKE. Fabricated LIES.

Keep spewing the propaganda it seems you listen to so much. Collusion to price fix products is called FRAUD. I have yet to see any governmental prosecution for such things. I wonder why that is?

Is it purposeful?

Is there a reason the government caused this economic downturn?

YES, they caused it. Fact, no possibility for argument.

SOP, cause problem, institute solution. Or if some catastrophe happens, never let it go to waste.

Thanks for your hyperbole and misconceptions between cause and effect.

I do not fall for propaganda. Sorry, if the socialists or the capitalists do not have the power, neither can cause the problem. But you and others keep falling for the same technique time and time again.

Hmmmm. We are currently at 50-75% effective tax rates for those that make over 30k to those who make 250k. So you and yours are calling for those in that tax range to pay what, 100% and the government will take care of them.

Pfffft!

Nope, not murder. They can swim can't they? Just call it a positive life altering experience. They'll thank us for it. taking their money away at the same time strikes me a fixing some other problems too.

Maybe a career change to dustman would too. Perspective, you know?

Penalty should be to fix everything they broke.

Which means they would be so far down in debt they would be kissing the devils feet.

What would an appropriate penalty be?

Nothing. By the time we come to terms with the devastation they would have caused, think of a plausible "penalty"....it'll be too late.

We're going to see more and more of these occurring, guys...I mean c'mon maybe it was intentional...a competitors bid to devalue BP or something...but the fact remains is that BP is doing basically nothing that's helping.

I like the idea of the pollution tax. I like the idea of BP spending every single penny they have on the clean up and go bust

After watching poor Martha Stewart go to prison for insider trading, which was not an ecological disaster..... Jail time for Corporate Owners/ Ceos?
and the largest stock holders at the time of the accident. If they want to be paid millions in salary then they should hold all the responsibility.

Jail time, Fines, Donations to Funding Free Energy Research Projects, funding for Government Grants and Awards to Free Energy Ideas.

We have got to get off these fossil fuels. We are all partially to blame if you have ever bought gas and oil. I feel just terrible watching this unfold.

All the people put out of business and having loss of income due to the oil spill, should be reimbursed until the spill is cleaned up and businesses restored. Tax breaks should be given to those who donate their time and efforts to clean up the mess.

A strong message of responsibility should be exemplified.

The penalty should be for them to release the free energy technology that they have been suppressing for decades.
Then we wouldn't need to burn their filthy product.

First off, what should be done is find out the saboteurs of theses rigs, if you look hard enough you will find that it traces back to Cheney and Halliburton.

Why are you people acting like BP did this on purpose?

Accidents happen.

It doesn't mean we should start throwing other people's money around and imprisoning people.

Pathetic.

I totally agree because it british majority of people posting are just jumping on BP this post would not be here if it was an american oil company yes its bad but most replys are just silly and childish BP will do what ever they have to.

Yesterday there were topics about the oil rig being sabotaged today fools jumping on BP We still don't no what happened. BP is massive on safety and there is no way the us goverment would let any type of drilling if the safety guide lines weren't met somthing went seriously wrong somtimes bad things happen the risk is always there and drilling that close to land is a disaster waiting to happen time will tell the cause

Very uninformed remark. It is a ecosystem and in all reality if one fails it effects others,,like dominoes. Life will not be going on for birds and aquatic life that are coated in this stuff and for many it will be a slow painful death.
To answer the question: What does China do with their executives when they screw up?

There is no penalty stiff enough to properly punish the corporations responsible for this disaster.
If one considers the massive ecological damage. The fiscal damage to people who make their living in the region off the water and other industry that will be effected. Then factor in the rise in cost of products/seafood that come from the area. The people who will no longer be able to truly enjoy the area of the gulf coast that will be affected by the pollution. There is no way to compensate for this at all!
I lived less than a mile from the beach in biloxi, ms for a short time while growing up. I was so disappointed and disgusted upon my first trip to the beach. I entered the water and waded out a ways, upon returning to land was horrified to find the soles of my feet covered in a black oily goo, that come to find out was the result of spills/accidents in the gulf that had occured years earlier.

God this is getting annoying. All these Americans saying BP should be given a huge fine. Do you not realize if that happens it is UK citizens who will suffer.

So we Gulf coast citizens should suffer alone? Get real.......this is an international problem. So yup the Brits may have to suffer too......explain again how this unfair.

Say what you will, the reason you can support yourself and type on your computer is BECAUSE of the oil that was spilled and that is being drilled, your dependency, my dedpendency, everyone in the west's dependency on it. That is our ecosystem, so before you go into activist mode, remember that you live your live by the OIL ecosystem, the human ecosystem. Just think before you speak.

485 million is a drop in the bucket for companies like this. 5billion sounds much more appropriate

The cost of clean-up.

It is just some oil. Life goes on.

that's the most self centered thing i've ever heard.

Who cares if marine life is soaked in oil? They'll get over it
