Obama tells Glenn Beck fans to check out HuffPo

President Barack Obama took aim Saturday at the angry rhetoric of those who denigrate government as “inherently bad” and said their off-base line of attack ignores the fact that in a democracy, “government is us.”

The president told students and others in the audience — the school stopping giving out tickets once 80,000 were distributed — that debates about the size and role of government are as old as the republic itself.

I thought i'd bring this to some of your attention. It brings up some good points in the debate of how big government should really be. Although I do agree the government is too intrusive in their current state, I think that words like fascist and socialist are thrown around quite heavily without fully understanding the terminology of such words. Obama seems to really take an effective defense to such comparisons and with his brush off attitude he seems to calm everyone down by letting them think he really looks at opposing views with good thought and regard to their position.

I definitely agree with and appreciate the spirit of your thread..

and believe me, I'm glad McCain didn't win..

But Obama is seriously no better than Bush. He's not a folksy con man, he's an educated and pompous con man.

He is to Bush the second what Clinton was to Bush the first. And clinton was no hero of working Americans either -- he passed nafta, which imposed economic warfare all over the world; look at what our subsidized (socialized) food exports have done to the developing world, and mexico, alone.

When the # will this country ever learn?

While I make no bones that I don't really like any of the major parties I do have to agree with Obama regarding the language being used. The problem is he is also guilty of using that same kind of rhetoric (albeit in a lighter fashion).

I guess individuality is a primitive concept. Think and analyze and then decide. Life is a simple process, it is civilization that distorts reality.

So Obama being the hypocrite that he is, tells the people to investigate opposing views carefully before coming to a decision in their political stance on certain views, yet secretly reads off the script provided for him before hand as he just reiterates it with flashy words. Am I wrong?

You could say that if you feel that way. My view is a bit different. I'm not the hardcore conspiracy type in that I don't think everyone is controlled. I think most of the hypocrisy we see on both sides is a result of going along to get along. To me what he is doing isn't much different than Bush's lip service to "bi-partisanship" because in practice we've got something different.

Most people don't intend to be hypocrites. I do think he's correct about the divisive language being used. it doesn't help anything but, what i'd like to see is the administration not taking advantage of that language. Of course the republicans would have to stop to. It's just not happening. It was a pretty speech though. I know i heard a lot of it from both sides during the HC debate, we are getting a lot of it in the immigration debate.

At the end of the day, i don't think either party really wants to solve the problems. I think they just want to maintain power. If they wanted to solve the problems the language wouldn't be used.

in a democracy, “government is us.”

wow
Guess the puppet president doesn't know what democracy really means

like i said to others around my friends, democracy is just a name for the NWO elite, government isnt obama, if he was he will be doing everything correctly, but that isnt happening.

This was a very weak defense, i guess they fear the people now.

What hope has obama brought to america?
What change has obama brought to america?

none he is more of the same.

Right but the big missing factor is that the U.S. is an EMPIRE -- you want to talk "big government" -- the U.S. has invaded some 72 different times in foreign countries since WWII.

This is a big cover-up the whole "obama is evil" campaign by the fake astroturf right wing corporate funded FAUX news dude is just a distraction -- when Obama "fights back" he's just playing along with this false dichotomy.

Private wealth controls the world -- any politician is OWNED by private wealth. Anthony Summers documented that the bankers funded BOTH fascism and socialism.

The secret rulers are coporate scum -- call them socialist or fascist it does not matter. Dictators? yes. Totalitarians? yes. Genocidal monsters? yes. Self-deluded idiots? yes.

O-Bomba works for the man -- he's a fake -- he sold out to Exelon Nuke power in Illinois. He's CIA. He works for Wall St -- CIA was started by Wall St.

It seems to me that Obama telling his detractors to read Huffington Post just own't work. For one thing, the majority influence in all 3 Branches of government are left-leaning (& in many cases, leaning HARD). Most of the government's detractors are more right-leaning/conservative in political outlook.

Now Obama wants his rightwing detractors to read a known leftwing publication like Huffington Post?

Why didn't he tell Olbermann and Maddow fans to read a conservative outlet...oh, that's right because he loves people who worship him. This is equivalent to Obama saying, "please read a new source that puts me in a positive light 100% of the time."

Give Bush credit when ever news outlet except Fox was smashing him, he didn't go out and say, "well, maybe they should watch some Fox or the NRO, or weekly standard."

1) We are NOT A DEMOCRACY.
2) The government is NOT US, the government is supposed to be THE LAW.

I have not heard Glenn Beck ever call for Anarchy, which I think Obama was trying to imply. To be honest, I don't watch TV, so I can't speak for what Glenn has said.

I'm against HUGE government and I'm against Anarchy. What Obama is missing is the fact that we're a Democratic Republic, not a Democracy. We have a Constitution and the government is supposed to be / enforce LAWS, the government is not "us".

“For when our government is spoken of as some menacing, threatening foreign entity, it conveniently ignores the fact in our democracy, government is us.”

/facepalm

Some interesting points in the initial thread, particularly the way people find it easy to denigrate their opponenets with serious terms used as throwaway insults. Anyone, it seems, who believes in ANY role for givt is considered a Socialist or a Statist, or their views are considered as "political correctness gone mad" (how often have we heard this?)
And like one of the other posters said, i too am glad Mcain didn't win (and i live in Australia) Can you imagine Sarah palin as Vice President?

Believe me, if he were higher up in the polls, he would be singing a much different tune about 'divisive language'. Then he would be selling it as proof positive of the nations' approval of his policies, and his oh so brilliant intellect.

Well instead of the Huffington Post how about any news source NOT OWNED by Rupert Murdoch?
