Massive oil spill spreading too fast to contain

Oil Hurricane to Hit New Orleans

At 5,000 barrels per day, the leak from the blowout of the Deepwater Horizon is spreading at a rate that would surpass the amount of oil dumped by the Exxon Valdez in another 45 days. While the leak has not been plugged, BP and Transocean are trying to install an underwater dome to trap the oil near the sea floor from where it can then be funneled to the surface for collection.

Gulf Coast oil spill moves closer to shore, threatens to eclipse even Exxon Valdez disaster

VENICE, La. (AP) - An oil spill that threatened to eclipse even the Exxon Valdez disaster spread out of control and drifted inexorably toward the Gulf Coast on Thursday as fishermen rushed to scoop up shrimp and crews spread floating barriers around marshes. The spill was both bigger and closer than imagined — five times larger than first estimated, with the leading edge just three miles from the Louisiana shore. Authorities said it could reach the Mississippi River delta by Thursday night.

Thanks for the thread, i think people might stick with the main one though.....anyway here's the latest press release from BP today....

BP MC252 Gulf Of Mexico Response Continues To Escalate On And Below Surface

Some interesting info in that release, how much they are keeping quiet about though i couldn't be sure. I'm certain they won't be releasing all the facts.

BP, as operator of the MC252 lease, continues to work around-the-clock on Transocean’s subsea equipment. Remotely-operated vehicles are monitoring the well and riser. Monitoring has detected an additional leak on the riser closer to the well. ROVs also continue to methodically work through procedures aimed at subsea activation of the blow-out preventer on the MC252 well.

So they've detected another leak, lets hope they get these sorted sooner than later.

Good job on creating an all-in-one thread on this topic.

I found it interesting that Halliburton was assisting with the investigation.

Cameron International Corp, which supplied the blowout preventer for the rig, said on Thursday it was insured for $500 million of liability, if needed. Halliburton said it did a variety of work on the rig and was assisting with the investigation.

Shrimp fishermen in Louisiana filed a class-action lawsuit against BP, Transocean, Halliburton and Cameron late on Wednesday, accusing them of negligence. None of the companies had an immediate comment on the lawsuit.

I wonder how many other class-action lawsuits will follow this one?

Rough times for BP corporation ahead - stocks down 8% and bill from this can ruin that company for real. 6000 soldiers, Navy, all departments... No company can handle those costs for long.

I am not sorry for firms - Oil Corporations are the reason why gold is black these days. Just sorry for peoples and nature in Gulf.

Really doesnt look good at all...

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is even worse than believed and as the government grows concerned that the rig's operator is ill-equipped to contain it, officials are offering a military response to try to avert a massive environmental disaster along the ecologically fragile U.S. coastline.

But time may be running out. Not only was a third leak discovered _ which government officials said is spewing five times as much oil into the water than originally estimated _ but it might be closer to shore than previously known, and could have oil washing up on shore by Friday.

At the same time, there appeared to be a rift developing between BP and the Coast Guard, which is overseeing the increasingly desperate operation to contain the spill and clean it up.

Ok, here goes, tongue in cheek.... Why don't we quickly get a national call out for people to work the oil spill, tell them we are paying $13.00 an hour wage's, and then when all the illegal aliens come to snap up those great paying job's, we just load em up, tell them they have to go out to an island to start the clean up, and send em right across the gulf, back to good ol home again, and bang problem solved..... just a thought

600-Plus Species at Risk From Deadly Gulf Oil Spill

With oil from a destroyed rig gushing into the Gulf of Mexico at an estimated rate of 210,000 gallons per day, the effects on wildlife will almost certainly be profound.

The April 20 explosion of a BP rig killed 11 people and eventually led to the platform's sinking about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast. But now the ensuing spill threatens 445 species of fish, 45 species of mammals, 32 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 134 species of birds, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries told AOL News. And when the massive oil slick makes landfall in Louisiana on Friday, it will hit 10 wildlife refuges or management areas, such as the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

I just gotta laugh at 6000 troups for clean up--they would need 6,000,000 to even dent a slick this size. This is on line with the valdez spill, and maybe greater before its over.
We already have vast areas of the gulf that are dead zones, i expect there will be more after this. Spring is nesting times for birds o the gulf , this will not be good since they will not leave these areas
Most of us are to blame since we fail to demand safe energy from our governments, we fail to stop the attack on our world concerning polution.
In the bible it says that god HAS to come or we woud destroy the whole world if he let us go on. Interesting and comming true on so many levels.
I dont expect british petroleum to pay , after all the natives and fishermen in alaska never were ully compansated.
One step closer to the end, how many more are left??

Amidst the chaos regarding the spill and the response to it, my thoughts are with the 11 rig workers that are still missing.

Oil rig workers are one of those occupations we rarely give a thought about unless we work with them in any way. This just goes to show the dangerous situation they can be faced with at any moment.

My thoughts are with the families too.

Oil from Gulf of Mexico spill spotted at mouth of Mississippi

MOUTH OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER — Faint fingers of oily sheen have reached the mouth of the Mississippi River, the vanguard of a gigantic spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The slick is making its way toward a delicate environment of birds, marine life and some of the nation's richest seafood grounds. As an employee in oil and gas, I can tell you that this won't be over soon.

For those of you that don't know, the riser is the pipeline that runs from the seabed to the rig, acting as a conduit for the wellfluid. The rig's job is to drill the hole and assemble the riser and subsea equipment etc...

The water depth is more than 1km. Fixing the riser is difficult, especially since the well is producing freely and that all they have is ROV's. ROV's have limited capabilites.

The first and best option would be for them to activate the SSIV's(Sub sea isolation valves) and other SDV's (Shutdown valves) in the well bore, to stop production in the hole.
These valves are operated through hydraulic and electric/electronic control lines called umbilicals. My guess is that these lines have been severed, or the subsea control equipment which sits on the seabed, is not functioning.
My guess is that is the issue here.

Their proposal to drill a relief well might work, but drilling takes time.
They will be burning millions per day on this.
