ROY -- Some Utah towns are starting to charge sex offenders an extra fee just for being sex offenders.

That means sex offenders will fork over $25 a year to make sure their cars and homes are listed on the sex offender registry. It comes in addition to state fees.

Roy Police Chief Greg Winham says his staff needs to recover some costs "for the processing and to capture some of the time involved."

Riverdale and South Ogden have also started charging. Winham says keeping things up to date is vital.

"[It's] extremely important. I think every citizen in every community should know kinds of issues are in their neighborhood so that they can better educate their families," Winham says.

The police chief says it's OK with him to put that on the sex offender's dime.

I'm 99% ok with them paying 25 bucks extra so we know who they are. Besides Utah is full of them.

Why not start charging fees for murderers, crooks, drunk drivers and gang member? Im more afraid of these groups of people released into our population.

Why don't we just charge them the price of a bullet and give it back to them right between the eyes - just be done with it.

Cheaper and safer all the way around...

Cheers...

Great, the other 49 states should follow. I mean can you think of a worst act then someone sexually violating a child, or any other adult for the matter. Sickening

Maybe a bit absurd for somebody caught taking a piss on the side of the road. Which can get you on the sex offender registry here.
As for rapists and child sex offenders, Public Execution. If you wanna pinch a few bucks out of it, place a door charge. Lets start @ the Vatican and work our way down.

Spoken only as a childless person could speak it

Don't think for a minute that this issue doesn't cross a parent's mind every day!

Man, talk about ignorant.

We should have an idiot tax so every single reply can be taxed for it.

Because a good number of people on the sex offender list don't belong on it. People that streaked in the 60's-70's can be made to register depending on their states law's. Heck if your caught getting oral in Louisiana you have to register. Romeo and Juliet scenario gets you on the sex offender list.

The problem is it is an ever expanding list. And technically because of court cases regarding the list I wouldn't be surprised if some States try and put people who subscribe to porn on it.

Let's charge a tax for overprotective breeders.

We'd get enough to pay off the federal debt!

Sounds too much like a Bill of attainder. And could lead to the Sex offender list being deemed unconstitutional as being on the list your compelled to pay a tax you wouldn't have to pay otherwise(Supreme Court ruled it is constitutional because they thought it wasn't punitive to be on it).

If it was just child molesters, child rapist's and serial rapist's where on it I would say the List is a good thing. But because of the sheer level of sexual repression(give it a few years and if your caught having sex in your own home between two consenting adults in a position other than missionary you will wind up on it) as well as glory hungry legislator/prosecutors expanding it beyond what it was meant to be, it needs to be reworked or it needs to go. Such things lead to a bad place.

ATS's armchair constitutionalists will probably ignore this part since it doesn't fit their agenda.

Sex offender laws ARE unconstitutional because they are based on a state definition of morality, which should not exist.
