okay, dude, enlighten me what have militias actually done to affect the government in a positive way (state or federal), to protect someone's freedom from gov't oppression, or...generally just anything besides talk big and make indirect threats?

I spent a bit of time researching this because I thought for a short time I would actually want to be apart of something of that sort. perhaps militia and minutemen were relevant in the time period when the gov't and its military wasn't as powerful as it is now. You can seem tough and cool on a youtube video (I've seen a few, even posted on here), but how fast do you guys think would lose their composure when there's a UAV drone right over their "compound"?

I realize and retract my harsh intentions in my original post because yes, the people should have the right to protest but I don't think militias are the right way, or even relevant to a society that really doesn't want any kind of war.

So, my apologies for jumping the gun and thinking this was a Federal proposal. BUT... it IS interesting that this is the same state that was working with the Governor to ESTABLISH a militia. Which leads me to believe that the State government is attempting to usurp the authority of the people of the State of Oklahoma by taking over the militia.

According to the state of California, any group more than 3 civilians coming together to train in military fashion is considered a militia and is therefore illegal.

The un-organized militias you speak of, are simply men and women who have made a public stand that IF the need should arise to defend our country from any entity including the federal government, that they stand ready to do so.

How exactly is this a bad thing?

I don't question their right to assemble. I question how they do it. the videos I've seen have such an arrogant and threatening demeanor and have recently grown in numbers and popularity with the election of president obama. it sort of leads me to think these groups are not so much protecting their rights as they are just scared and riled up (who are also probably mad for the same reasons) people made this way by media sensationalists.

edit: I'm also under the impression that most of these people live off the grid, only further limiting their involvement with the changing of the nation and policies. doing nothing and waiting for it all to go to hell sounds kind of lazy, no?

These men and women aren't aware of what they're protesting about. Like many tea bagging folks (god get a new name already, please?), they will believe anything that is fed to them.

Also,

I'm waiting for a list of freedoms that have been taken away. Can someone actually present a list? And no, having a license to fish is not a removal of freedom like another member stated. I think that actually kinda proves my point.

They exhibited amazing courage in the face of overwhelming opposition. They helped form a Republic free of the tyranny of British Rule. But that was back when they were relevant... I guess now were just screwed.

There are 300,000,000 people in this country roughly and not a force on the planet that could oppose them if they got focused I'd say that makes them pretty relevant today.

yes there are a great deal of people in the US, not all of them think the gov't is going to bang down their door and are preparing for it. do you really think an actual battle between the real numbers of people who are in militias and the military would last long or end in any other way other than them getting blown to bits?

that's why I can't take them seriously, it's totally unrealistic.

You are making a foolhardy assumption that their own military will engage them wholesale. Oh sure there will always be those few possibly few hundred maybe thousand but the United States military will not engage its own populace wholesale. You do not know the reach of the Militias and how far up the chain that reach extends.

Why do you fear your Government and don't tell me you don't because you fear its overwhelming military might over you, why do you allow them to take your courage. What you perceive and what is real are not one and the same. You don't know what the Militia has done for you and that's how it is meant to be. Others do behind the scenes so that you can carry on with your life uninterrupted. Militia doesn't only mean taking up arms in this day they are many facets hard at work behind the scenes helping maintain the balance. You don't have to believe me. I took my oath and I'm bound to it. You benefit from it whether you want it or not.
