ASHLAND, Wis. — Representative David R. Obey has won 21 straight races, easily prevailing through wars and economic crises that have spanned presidencies from Nixon’s to Obama’s. Yet the discontent with Washington surging through politics is now threatening not only his seat but also Democratic control of Congress.

Mr. Obey is one of nearly a dozen well-established House Democrats who are bracing for something they rarely face: serious competition. Their predicament is the latest sign of distress for their party and underlines why Republicans are confident of making big gains in November and perhaps even winning back the House.

I expect the DNC to lose big in November unless something drastic happens.
The dembs have so far failed to live up to their promises. Pandering to lobbiests and big business; but most of all, Unless they start bringing
a lot of troops home; they deserve to lose.

This tells me we really have learned nothing. Back when we had a Republican majority, it shifted back to a Democrat majority due to the voters being disappointed with the let down promises from the R's. Now we're disappointed with the let down of the D's so here we go back to the R's.

They'll eventually let us down, too, and we'll end up back with a D majority. The only real benefit of this that I can see is that we'll have a slightly better system of checks and balances. I don't like it when we have an D president and D congress majority or an R president and an R congress majority. My preference is for a mixture of both.

But other than that, I wish as a society we could understand the back and forth between D's and R's is getting nothing done and that we could get some I's in there.

Independents, Greens, Bull Moose, Socialist Workers Party, Big Thumbs party
anyone except the GOP or Democrats.
At this time I would even be favorable to a Benevolent Monarch.

whaaa, I came back to this thread, because I remember a post of yours from another thread. You brought up the possible political angle to the Arizona bill.

Whether the bill was a deliberate political tactic, I can't say for sure (I do so still want to naively believe it wasn't), but I think the spillover into other states and the national scene smacks of the unseen hands of Karl Rove (or protegee) and Frank Luntz.

Gone are "family values", abortion, gays, guns, and God. Well, for the moment those useful tools have been stored away in the closet.

Before I continue, here are the definitions I use for "fool"
a professional jester, formerly kept by a person of royal or noble rank for amusement
a person who has been tricked or deceived into appearing or acting silly or stupid

No, the latest useful tools for useful fools seem to be illegal immigration and "English only".

As I pointed out in the "EO" Alabama thread, businesses in the Gulf area advertised in Mexico in SPANISH for workers to cross the border!

So, yes, these are new useful tools to garner Republican votes. Prediction (if the useful tool/fool works), the GOP will add seats, but since illegal immigration is good for business, nothing effective will be done, and oops, haha, the EO/Arizona-like bills will be declared unconstitutional.

Meanwhile the Bestest Friends of Wall Street, Corporations, and the Have Mores will once again have the power to continue to deregulate financial institutions, keep Reagan's "shining city on the hill" darkly shuttered with crude non-renewable energy technology, and push us forward into the Dark Ages, with global military imperialism.

I am voting against every incumbent on the ticket, regardless of political party. I wish others would do the same.

Kick the bums out!

If the new guys continue to let us down, they will be one termers.

Oh great, a bunch of big spending authoritarians will loose their seats to a bunch of big spending authoritarians.

Wake me up when something actually changes.

I was thinking the exact same thing as I read the OP. I'm realizing more and more how politics is just a tool to keep us playing the one-up game on the other side. It really doesn't matter whether the Democrats lose seats or not. Their brothers, the Republicans, will be taking them. And all will remain the same.

Yes, what AshleyD
pointed out so well describes how "bloodless revolutions", voting, happens in America, "throwing the bum out". The idea of "it doesn't matter who we vote for" has been heard by my ears for 50 years, although over various reasons for why it doesn't matter.

Now, however, at no time since Pres Eisenhower warned us about the military-industrial complex and their influence in spending tax dollars (and influencing foreign affairs), and even since Ralph Nader gave us sterner warnings about corporate takeover of politicians, hence, the business of governing, again raiding tax dollars by privatizing and bail outs while making sure the rules/laws favored them, does this great nation and its people find themselves so terribly used by corporate influence.

We have been so cowed into not acting collectively unless through corporate astroturf groups or groups approved by politicians (religious/political), or through violent means meant to fail, that we have forgotten (or forced not to think about) how powerful collective action by citizens can be, the changes that have been and can be possible through this collective action.

Thank God, we have been reminded of this, admonished to do something about the situation we find ourselves in.

For those interesting in how events such as this just seem to keep happening over and over again, I highly recommend the following book: A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn.
