Even though the area is relatively free of earthquakes given the gargantuan size of the cities population and the building codes an earthquake like that of 1884 could mean destruction on so many levels for a city that is not prepared for such a possibility. After less specific hints of these possibilities appeared in previous research, a 2003 analysis by The New York City Area Consortium for Earthquake Loss Mitigation put the cost of quakes this size in the metro New York area at $39 billion to $197 billion.
