Hey guys im posting this because i am very confused about this new star appearing in the sky. It appears around 8:00 pm and lasts until about 8:40pm. I live in california, and the star is facing the northwest direction.

I checked stellarium and the closest thing was Capella, which appears in the same direction. However, at 8:40pm Capella is still visible, and this star is not. Its almost like the star is setting on its own. I also think ive located Capella, but my camera could not pick it up. it did, however, pick up this star. My camera could only make out the moon and this wierd star. Nothing else int he sky could be picked up by my camera.

I currently dont have a cable to connect my camera to my computer, but i will be getting it soon. if all else fails, ill take a picture and post it on here.

But dont take my word for it, if you live near california, look northwest at around 8:00pm.

I'm in Cali and will take a look tomorrow...try and get a pic posted - it will prevent further posts such as mine.

Sounds like it might be Venus, it will get real bright after sunset and then set not long after.

Did you see a cluster of stars above?

This is Pleiades

i thought it was venus, but its not. If you check stellarium venus is no where close to that location.

sorry for the lac of a pic, i know. I was busy and i thought i had the cables to upload the video. When i realized i didnt it was too late and the star was gone.

Ive been seeing this star for about 4 days now at roughly the same time.

It could be Venus...but if you observe Venus setting before this star sets that you see...it could also then be Betelgeuse. Both Venus and Betelgeuse sets before the other Star you mentioned. When using Stellarium, make sure you have it checked off to where the planets are showing up...sometimes this tool may get unchecked and you wont notice a planet in the direction you are looking.

Mabey you didnt notice Venus was in the direction you are seeing this 'star'.

I saw the same thing last year. It was about 45* up and wsw from dallas area. it would move some.

never figured it out.

obviously, it wasnt nibiru
.

was weird though. Never saw a star that would track when you looked at it. It didnt track in a linear way. kinda erratic.

everyone told us it was venus as well.

oh well.

Venus is close to that location:

It is behaving as you described as well.

It's not moving like a star, because it isn't, it's a planet (duh) which is much closer to earth than a star is, so it moves much faster as it moves across the sky.

Chadwickus...Can you offer some advice?

I have tried so many times to save a screen shot from Stellarium and it never works!! It is so frustrating in times like this because I want to show a image like you just did.

Is there a place that the images could be getting saved to that I wouldnt think of to check? One time I set it up to where the shot would be saved to my desktop...with no luck.

Any help at all is greatly appriciated!

oh wow...

ya its venus lol those stupid trees(in stellarium) where blocking it and thats why it wasnt showing up.

i have to admit though, its insanely bright for venus. Maybe cuz of the horizon? idunno oh well.

Open up the tools tab in configuration to choose where to save the screen shots.

Then to take a screen shot press ctrl+s and it will save it to the file you selected.

Hope that helps!

demonseed~

edit3: (oops, damn, i typed and uploaded far too slow. lol) mybad

hiyah,

That beauty is Venus, for sure.
I saw it last night in the same place as you. (from east coast)
I am also an amateur astronomer, and was confused for a minute as to what it was,
funny right? lol :p
I havent been out under the stars for some months, and that part of sky is not visible from my home.

but after I saw it, i came home and checked stellarium like you did (good call)

capella had me confused at first to, but then i turned off star labels,
and remembered Venus has been "following the sun" through the sky recently,
rising with Sol, and setting with Sol..
i just went back and took a couple screenshots ~
this is at 8 pm.... in ny...

just venus~
and a zoomed out 'fisheye' of all the bodies in the sky at the time, 1 min. later...

oops, pics....brb.. lol

well, they are big and i forgot to resize them..
so ill just link,..

time stamp & date @ bottoms.

Oh no it won't. I live Cali to Pal and I bet I can post you some competition. Even with pics.

I'll be on my backporch looking north east by north west. 7:55.
tomorrow night.

We can all do the Joe Dirt thing and look at the moon together.

I dont understand why you think its not Venus....

Mabey I read your post wrong?

Is this 'star' to the right of Orion?

[edit on 25-4-2010 by LeoVirgo]

Also, Mars and Saturn are setting in that area of the sky but later in the evening. Could it be one of those?
