The babylonian "mystery religions"....[/url]
It's not just Babylon. Mystery religions were kind of the norm in ancient days. Part of the mechanism of control they used was to keep much, if not
most of what they did inside the temples a secret.
Before and after Jesus, there were a lot of mystery cults in the region - the era was rife with countless new religions and cults springing up all
over the place and a lot of these held that there were deep mysteries only available to a select few, high in the faith.
In all of these, even going back at least to Ancient Egypt, too, there's always some secret part of the temple, a Holy of Holies, where only the very
highest priests can enter. The Jewish Temple had this, too, and the Ethiopian Church has kept that tradition alive in their church where they claim
to have the "Ark of the Covenant." Only the one, highest priest of the church is allowed inside to see the Ark.
All of these keeping of secrets in religion is, I think, no different than what secret societies do.
