Does anyone know of any secret societies that existed before 1 A.D? The title says it all. If no one can find a society before that, anytime from 1 A.D to 500 A.D would be most acceptable!

Probably the TPTB before their rise to power. In fact legend say that they have been here for thousands of years.

The babylonian "mystery religions" supposedly came from thousands of years before that. Supposedly they were started just after the worldwide flood. Of course there is no way to prove or disprove any of this but there is some evidence for it.

While the idea of Babylonian mystery religions is fairly speculative, it is accepted by every historian that there were Greco-Roman mystery schools, with access restricted to secretly initiated members. See:

en.wikipedia.org...

This is not an academically disputed fact, for what its worth. The most powerful (and perhaps most interestsing) was the Elusinian Mystery school:

The Greeks had Oracles which were secret themselves but access to them was limited to the elite of society.

The Pythagoreans were around 500BC...

I wrote a paper this last year concerning Pythagoras and the some of the possible influences on his philosophy. There were several anticdotal and historical refrences relating to the belief that he studied in many different "Mystery Schools" from the Mediteranian and Asia Minor.

This period dates from around 500bc. Pythagoras was born approx. 570bc and established a school of philosophy in Crotona, Italy, before the rise of the Roman Empire as we know it. I found refrences to his studies of the Eleusinian Mysteries, Chaldean Mystery Schools(Babylonian), Adonis Cults(Greeks), Egyptian Mystery Schools and also refrences to Brahmin teachings. Some of these notes come from writings of his followers and I also found historic refrences from Plutarch, who was a Greek native who later became a Roman citizen, born 46ad.

There is still a lot of conjecture about these different teachings. It seems that many of these belief systems had different mixtures of multiple gods and animistic beliefs which included animal and in some cases human sacrifice. Suffice it to say that I don't believe he embraced the sacrifice belief systems and that he leaned more toward observation and theorums he could reason and prove.

There are a lot of sources for discovering early religions and philosophies, just start poking around the web.

The pythagoreans are an awesome secret society. There were a bunch of ancient secret socities. If you are really interested in learning about them, you should check out Secret teachings of all ages by Manly P Hall.

www.sacred-texts.com...

There were so many, mainly in greece, egypt and Israel. That is why the masons claim that their routes go back thousands of years, because there were secret societies 3000+ years ago.

The babylonian "mystery religions"....[/url]

It's not just Babylon. Mystery religions were kind of the norm in ancient days. Part of the mechanism of control they used was to keep much, if not most of what they did inside the temples a secret.

Before and after Jesus, there were a lot of mystery cults in the region - the era was rife with countless new religions and cults springing up all over the place and a lot of these held that there were deep mysteries only available to a select few, high in the faith.

In all of these, even going back at least to Ancient Egypt, too, there's always some secret part of the temple, a Holy of Holies, where only the very highest priests can enter. The Jewish Temple had this, too, and the Ethiopian Church has kept that tradition alive in their church where they claim to have the "Ark of the Covenant." Only the one, highest priest of the church is allowed inside to see the Ark.

All of these keeping of secrets in religion is, I think, no different than what secret societies do.

Supposedly, the Mystery Schools can be traced all the way back to King Salomon.

There have been secret societies as long as civilization has existed.

In the olden days, secret societies were a way to administer rites of passage to adolescent boys and girls. They were nothing like the Freemasons or the Bilderbergers.
