I read about this in the UK newspaper "The Independent" today. In their article, they made claims that another of these phones was also 'accidentally' left within reach of another well known tech blog/site.

If that's correct, I really have to suspect publicity stunt. One I can buy as bad luck, but two falling into the hands of tech bloggers? Rather odd...

Wrong, the person who found it tried several times to return it to apple, of course we all know customer service sucks and he never got a positive response so he sold it to Gizmodo for $5000 after noticing this was not the standard iphone.
