A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck off Papua New Guinea but no tsunami alert has been issued and there are no early reports of casualties.

The US Geological Survey said it had hit at about 0915 local time (2315 GMT) and was centred about 29km (18m) east of the Pacific state's city of Lae.

The quake was registered at a depth of 66km

Another sizeable quake. Hopefully no casualties here. not much news out there yet.

i'm not a firm believer of the 2012 stuff, however all these HUGE earthquakes are starting to make me wonder if this is the beginning of the earths poles shifting

Why not blame it on pixies instead, or large underground worms farting & causing earth tremors.

It's probably that more earthquake detectors equals more earthquakes on record.

Larger population densities living on fault lines equals a higher number of deaths due to earthquakes, and therefore greater publicity of that earthquakes.

We need a total for the whole of 2010, or at least the majority of the year, before we really know if this year is going to have a greater number of earthquakes.
