Manhattan, NY, United States (AHN) - An imam who admitted to lying to authorities and tipping off a suspect in a conspiracy to bomb New York's subway system, has been ordered out of the country.
Ahmad Wais Afzali, 38, was sentenced to time served and ordered to leave in 90 days or face deportation back to Afghanistan. In his sentencing hearing on Thursday, he told the the court during his the he had not intended to help suspects accused of the bomb plot.
Afzali, who grew up in New York and served as a police informant in the years after 9/11, was charged in September of willfully making false statements to the FBI in a matter involving international and domestic terrorism. He entered a plea agreement last month that reduced the maximum eight years in prison the original charge against him carried, to six months.
Prosecutors say he alerted Najibullah Zazi about a federal investigation on the planned suicide operation.
