Here is a link that shows how the plane hit a sapling in the middle of a field a mile before the airport! They sure as hell knew they were too close at that point!

The craziest part is that they could not avoid some taller trees a quarter mile away at the end of the field and those trees are the ones that caused it to roll and crash on its back. Plus, with a qtr mile visibility and a 3 deg descent slope, that means they saw the ground for 4 miles before they clipped the first sapling
