Eyjafjallajökull Caldera Eruption

Eyjafjallajökull has began erupting again, after the Fissures on its flanking edges suddenly stopped their flow. Its thought the Migration of Magma has centralised to the Volcanic conduit itself within the Caldera.

Unfortunately this just so happens to be sitting under the Glacier, to which a significant "hole" has already 500m wide, appeared where meltwater from internal heat has began melting it. As one of the rivers dowstream from the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano has risen 3ft the Icelandic authorities began evacuating 800 people overnight.

However the volcano erupted in the morning, sending a plume some 14,000ft (observed by pilots) and caught on camera 150 miles from the Eyjafjallajökull Caldera.

No worries. Hopefully people wont be confused by thinking "eh wasn't there already a eruptive event on the Eyjaf?" To which there was, but the Magma source began to wind down until the Fissures were no longer active.
Its now thought due to Earthquake swarms and migration, that the Magma channelled its way Eastwards to the Caldera itself to where it is now.

I'd guess the plume is coming from explosive interraction with the Magma and Glacier itself, once the vent becomes stabilised we'll start to see a more Fissure-eruption event.

Yes, about 700 people were evacuated last night .

Apparently we are even expecting an explosive eruption , something to do with all the Ice melting. Might cause flooding as well, we'll see.

IFR flights at or below FL300 (30.000 feet) are now forbidden north and east of the eruption. The prohibition zone may even be enlarged all the way to Norway and Russia. Polar flights will very likely be vectored to the west.

So still much caution is being taken, rightly so, with the Caldera eruption. Icelandic Authorities are also thinking of destroying roads to save the bridge foundations to make it easier to repair in the aftermath of the floods.

As per the info from our Coast Guard that is doing flyovers the plume has now reached 22 thousand feet. Ashfall is headed east towards Fimmvörðuháls. The size of the " collapse" ? is about 1km * 600 m.

There is an eruption in the crater but not on the southside.
The glacier river is rising about 1000 cybicmeters per second and growing.

One small bridge is gone and the flood has increased from Gígjökull.

People are asked to get out of the area immediately.

Big sigdæld around Gigi

Radar Image taken from the TF-SIF Jarðvísindamenn in TF SIF, a Coast Guard plane flying over Eyjafjallajökull, say that big sigdæld be around as Gigi is on offer hábungu glacier. Earth scientists speculated that the depression of the circumference of 1 km x 600 meters and the depression to grow rapidly.

Only the top crater eruption but not in the south side. Jelly is a glacial river, 1000 cubic meters per second and growing.

Göngubrúin the lagoon is gone and the flood has multiplied from Gígjökli. It almost halfway to Markarfljótsbrú. There are people in cars should get the Hvolsvöll first. Civil ask those who were against a diagnosis in Landeyjum to do the same. They are encouraged to bring an immediate Hvolsvöll.

In the lágflugi Pétursey and west of Eyjafjöllum saw Geologists in TF SIF that no changes were in the water course there. Flood appears to go north and down Markarfljót ounces

The water level by the glacial tongue Gígjökull on the northern Eyjafjallajökull has increased significantly since last night. Before the new eruption began the water level was 75 centimeters, now it has exceeded two meters and continues to rise.

Just talked to a friend on the phone , he told me that there hasnt been an eruption there for 200 years and usually Katla follows.

Now THAT will NOT be nice....

Add : Apparently this eruption is about 10-20 times more powerful then the recent one. The "crack" is now about 2 km length. They are expecting a lot of flooding.

Apparently they are destroying the bridges to save the foundations.

I would never have thought of that. It is cheaper to replace the road on the bridge than to replace the foundations they say.

Potential for a phreatic eruption..

Volcanologist Haraldur Sigurdsson said there is a risk of a phreatic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier in south Iceland, which occurs when magma makes contact with water. The crater at the glacier’s summit is filled with ice which is starting to melt.

On one hand, it is an awesome display of Mother Nature. On the other, I hope everyone stays safe and there is no loss of life.

I believe we're starting to see some ash fall - different from the snow earlier - dark and more solid looking..
