This just straight up pisses me off right here.

"Thank God for Dead Soldiers."

"You're Going to Hell."

"Semper Fi Fags."

Hundreds of grieving families have been targeted by the Westboro Baptist Church, which believes military deaths are the work of a wrathful God who punishes the United States for tolerating homosexuality.

Most mourners try to ignore the taunts. But Snyder couldn't let it go. He became the first to sue the church to halt the demonstrations, and he's pursued the group farther than anyone else.

Now, more than four years after his son died in a Humvee accident in Iraq, Snyder's legal battle is headed to the Supreme Court. And his tireless efforts have drawn support from across the country, including a wave of donations after he was ordered to pay the church's court costs -- a $16,500 judgment that the congregation plans to use for more protests.

Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder, 20, was not gay. But for the Westboro church, any dead soldier is fair game. Pastor Fred Phelps oversees a congregation of 70 to 80 members -- mostly his children and grandchildren. They consider themselves prophets, and they insist the nation is doomed.

No matter what you think of the war, going to someones funeral and yelling talk and **** about the dead, shouldn't be acceptable.

If I say the N word in public, I'm sure all hell would rise upon me, and 99% of the USA would damn me, so where they hell do people get off saying parents dead children should be damned because the US "kind of" accepts homosexuals. (Because you know homosexuals, all evil and doing evil stuff to people *sarcasm*)

The Supreme Court agreed last month to consider whether the protesters' actions, no matter how provocative and upsetting, are protected by the First Amendment. The case will be argued in the fall.

Isn't it these people who got all in a fury about saying fire in a crowded room, as it may cause damage, but shouting sick things to people mourning their dead children is 'debatable'?

I read that they got rights to protest, but isn't there a point were you just say, "No, Go **** Yourself, that's just ****en wrong mate!"

As long as they don't go out killing gays themselves, they are fine and dandy. Sure what they say is hateful and such but without violent protest there is nothing to be feared.

Sadly, there may be those ignorant enough to commit violence and yet not take part in the protests. Sadness...

These have been on UK TV doco last year. Very crazy fundamental people. It's the 21st Century and some people are still dumb enough to fall for witch-burning hysterics or lynch mob fever.

From the doco, my abiding memory is they're raising their kids to be just the same and full of superstitious hatred and false faith. It's always a deep shame when nutjobs bend their kids' thoughts towards stupidity and social isolation.

We should burn or lynch 'em!!

yes, its a difficult thing to define legally. yes what they did is very wrong, but how do you define what they did in a way that doesn't violate the first amendment and doesn't have any dangerous loopholes?

i think this is why we have courts, a trusted person who is called upon to decide a case that laws don't exactly cover. but of course, this is not what is happening. the judge that forced the family to pay for the church's legal fees should be shot.

personally i would have taken matters into my own hands, i would have been so angry, i probably would have picked a fight while packing heat, and used "self defense" as a legal justification.

I doubt the extraterrestrial that they worship even hates gays. Even so, there is no reason to hate anyways. Homosexuals aren't a threat to their well being... lots of great things they love result from homosexual people.

What's it to them if the US accepts gays? I'm sure that if their all powerful and omnipotent God had a real problem with these people, he's more than capable of sorting it out himself and in a better, more selective way than AIDs or some other allegedly gay-related Doomsday scenario.

I genuinely doubt their God needs the hard-of-thinking to act on his behalf. It's like me picking a fight with Lex Luthor because I don't like the way he disrespects Superman... ...or something.

Also, the fact that their God appears to have no problem with homophobic, bigoted idiots suggests that their God is actually a fairly tolerant chap, and it's therefore unlikely that he - not what some religious-politico wrote down 2000 years ago - would have a problem with gays either, and therefore undermines their point slightly.

I hope when they die and go to heaven, it's all decorated in pink with mirror balls and Lady Gaga, George Michael and Elton John are played non-stop for all eternity. Oh, and Rock Hudson is at the gates as a meeter and greeter.

Ho Hum. You get sick of people like this who constantly use their God to vent hatred among the population. So what if your gay. I'm not but I don't give a flying f**k if the next man or woman is. The stink of it is, the tax payers of the US will be paying for this bull if it goes to court.

Why can't these bible bashers stay in their own corner????!!!

Gay or straight doesn't matter. But as far as America being a great country? I think it was. But with terrorists like Bush and Obama it is rapidly going downhill!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Although this is completely ignorant, it is funny on so many levels. First the accusation is priceless and second, this church looks incredibly stupid and probably has something coming now. I wish I could have witnessed the head speaker mouth this one off.

But i think that's the point of the American First Amendment, isn't it?

It caters for both of those points. It allows for utter rubbish to be spouted by these moronic religious zealots and it allows for normal people to say, "P**s off and go get effed".

Personally i think it should be changed as regardless of someone's opinion, saying things to incite others into violence or danger shouldn't be allowed in public. What they say or believe in the confines of their own home is fine. But to go out in public with the express intent on stirring up hatred and violence should be stopped. There's no need for it.

The N word in public is only a crime to say if you're white bro, if you're black you can say it to the pope and jesus and its cool.

First, these people are not true Chritians. They do not practice what Jesus taught, nor what Jesus lived. They certainly do not display what I believe nor read when I study the scriptures.

Secondly, to assume all Christians are like these people is like saying, that since all KKK members drive trucks...everyone that drives a truck is in the KKK. Or since all WWII Nazis were Germans, then all Germans are Nazis....simply not true. These people display no love, no mercy, no compassion, no tolerance, nothing but a twisted faith hijacked and distorted.

Thirdly, I hope such actions as their's are prohibited from combative public displays...protesting at a funeral is pretty sorry... however, like pornography, they are protected by the Constitution. Such displays are as offensive to some as flag burning is to me... but it is protected.

Finally, if military deaths are the result of America accepting homosexuality, there must have been a lot of gays, lesbians, and tolerance of such in WWII... in many cases i.e. D-Day-Civil War-WWI... we lost more men in one day than we have in Iraq/Afghanistan combined.

I don't agree with the lifestyle, But I do things many don't agree with too... here in the USA, that is your right, to be who you want to be. God Bless Gays, and protestors. and you, and me.

how do you religious people feel about this blatant show of intellect by your fellow worshippers?

Star and Flag,

I just don't understand why people feel the need to a) Believe in God to back up thier negative views and b) voice such obviously hateful comments publicly.

That said this issue does raise the question of freedom of speech and the rights of people to express themselves. Though it does throw a paradox to 'Liberty for All'...

For me, if you believe in god that’s up to you. I personally think that all religions are false, I mean how stupendously ignorant are we to say that we know the mind of god, given the size of the universe (multiverse) and our place in it.

If you don't like the idea of gay/lesbian then keep it to yourself.

BTW I'm as straight as they come but I don't hate people that are gay/lesbian.... it's not a choice it’s who they are, and accepting who they are is what this is all about isn't it?

I had a debate recently with someone about Paedophiles, who are in my mind the most detestable people of all. The debate centered on whether paedophilia was a sexual orientation or mental illness.

My point of view was the best course of action for a pedo was to chemically castrate them.

But doesn't this issue really come down to social acceptability. I mean as an example, back in roman days paedophilia was practiced and accepted.

So the question of gay people and the right to protest against them should surely come down to what is acceptable social behaviour.

My view here is that so long as people are old enough to consent and no one is harming anyone else, then this is socially acceptable and so the rights of the Gay person should be upheld.

So this should mean that the church propagating these hateful actions should be prosecuted for infringing the rights of the soldiers in question.

Thank you for bringing this story to ATS, it really does highlight that there are some very nasty people out there.

Peace Out,

Korg.

Yikes, isn't that just a little weird to start with? Perhaps there aught to be some kind of law against this kind of progeneration

Wonder how much incest it took to accomplish that?

Back to the protests, one wonders how they avoided some sort of disturbing the peace charge? It seems to me it doesn't take much nowadays to get that smacked on you when it suits the authorities.
